I was gone for a few days and pleasently surprised to see that this thread has really taken off! We really got to keep it up. I would love to be part of a group prayer session too.

We should head over to. The prayer room at some time and if there are any of us there, we should pray the litany of the hours. If I am there I will pray the horologian (the eastern equiv)

St.Olaf Pray for us!

Norway came under attack today, a building was bombed and a man shot up a youth camp. They are reporting casualties from both incidents! Pray for the people of Norway, pray for the people who lost their lives, pray for those who stopped this evil.

St. Olaf Pray for us!

Well, there's also a bit more too it. I'd need special permission from the bishop as well, mainly because my spouse isn't Catholic... yet. ;)
I kind of envy you dscherck. If I become a priest (i've also been giving it some thought) I'd have to be celibate, being Latin Rite and all.

But If you ask my mom I'd be a great priest because I love to lecture and talk and talk and talk.... My only flaw would be that my homilies would be way too long :D

Oh and whats the minimum age for a priest in the Eastern Rites, dscherck? You said you had to wait 8 years before you could even apply, and that would make you 42. When in the Latin Rite it's 25, so I could start schooling next year and finish it just when I was turning the minimum age.

It's 25 to become a priest? Hmm awesome lol I'll be 25 when I get out of the Navy! PS I have also given it a lot of thought, especially after watch Karol: The man who became Pope and Karol: The man, the Pope. Also my godmother said I would be a great priest. So idk I'll take a retreat at a Benedictine Monastary for a week and think about it and ask God for guidance.

I've had the idea to take a retreat to one of the Benedictine monasteries near me as well, but I don't think I'd become a priest in a religious order. A diocesan priests life would suit me much better. I've also given some though to becoming a priest trained in the Tridentine Rite, but apart from the SSPX (which is slightly questionable) I don't see how that could happen. The only reason we have it in my parish is because our priest trained himself in it.

Well, to be a deacon the reqs are here: Byzantine Catholic Seminary - Program Requirements
and obviously you need to be ordained to the diaconate in order to receive the priestly ordination.

For me the main parts are to be a member of a parish for at least 5 years and be actively involved in the church, and also to have been married for at least 8 years. I've only been married close to 5 years, and I've only been attending my current parish for about 2 years. Not to mention that my wife isn't Catholic.

In all honesty, I don't think I'm called to be a priest, but still, I feel that I should prayerfully consider it at least before dismissing the idea completely since it is an available option to me. I do know that I will be working hard to ensure that my daughter and any future children of mine consider religious vocations to be very honourable ones. I would LOVE to see my daughter become a nun, or a future son become a priest. :D

Yeah I wouldn't want to be a priest in a religious order either, I am just thinking about going to the Monastery cause of how devout they are to work and prayer. Also would be great to be in that quiet environment to just really think things through and to see if priesthood is for me.

The Eastern Rites have some strict age requirements, 32 just for a deacon! When I could be a priest in the Latin rite by 25 if I started schooling ASAP. I wonder why there are such high age requirements in the Eastern Rites? Maybe it has something to do with married clergy?

Yet they'll ordain you a priest at 25. Somehow that doesn't make sense.
Different dioceses may have different requirements too. And bishops do have discretion to ordain men earlier if they feel they're ready don't they?

Yes the bishops can ordain you earlier if they so choose. Kind of like if at this very moment I was elected pope i would be ordained a deacon one day, a priest the next, then a bishop, and then finally be installed as pope. (not likely to happen, but it's something to think over).
