There's variations of a meme that goes around about the Native American teaching of there being two wolves in each of us - a good and an evil one - and who we are depends on the one we feed the most.
two-wolves.jpg
That is similar to the life of a Christian. When become Christian, we have this conscious unlike any other conscious, and it suddenly challenges our conventional beliefs and morale we grew up accepting.

Our awareness of lack in integrity goes up, and we catch ourselves in hypocrisy more. The “good wolf” or the Spirit comes in and challenges the depravity that has been there from the beginning.

And feeding Him vs the familiar, comfortable inclinations we already possess, makes all the difference in how we manifest to the world. (This is not an invitation to theological debate – not assuming the Spirit can be “trumped” or what have you.)

Anyhow, forgive me if you think that is a poor parallel. But I only illustrate it to give an idea of what I mean… have you ever watched two wolves fight each other?

As I get older, and more conscious of my inner thoughts, the world around me, I come to a clearer understanding of what Jesus means when He says that we “are not of this world.” I often feel emotionally drained by this battle.

I see hardness of heart around me, people stubbornly refusing to compromise in any area you can think of (not just politics and religion – in America, our adversarial mindset permeates everything, even something as superficial as football).

And I fight more and more this feeling of “if you all don’t care what happens to this country or society as a whole, and only seek your self-interests, then why should I care? If you don’t care how your consistent, ‘little’ dishonesties affect you and your loved ones as well as others in some cases, why should I? If you place no value in true, upright character – not the charade done to gain this or that, but honest goodness and love demonstrated in principle…” I’m ashamed to admit sometimes I think then “…why should I?”

Without going on a rant about the negative characteristics and mentality of this generation and society as a whole, my question, finally, is this (cause you know I can’t ‘just’ ask my question :) ):

How do you train the renewed man inside? Besides the standard read, pray and worship, can you delve a bit deeper than that? Describe what you mean by either of these three, as they are done differently across denomination and culture.

And also, what else? What do you do in your everyday routine that helps you maintain focus on Christ, and at the same time attention to what is needed here on earth?

How do you combat the sorrow that the evil wolf will simply not die until you do yourself physically, and like Jason Voorhees will keep coming back no matter how many times laid to rest? I know this is the walk, but sometimes it is hard to accept and live with.

Thank you all. Blessings.

The reality though is that we have inside us a Lion, and a worm outside trying to convince us that he is a lion and really is the one in control.

Yeah, this can easily turn into something theological, which I wasn't going for, but advice in methods of sanctification and self-control.

If the worm, the sin nature (what I was referring to) is so weak and powerless, I think our Church would look far different... something like a strong reflection of Chrsit, and a light upon a hill. Rather than the reputation she tends to have (often stereotyped and misrepresented, however) in this part of the world is one of bigioyrry and judgement, which the intellectually honest would admit the sentiment is not completely misplaced.

But yeah, I am referring to behavior and attitudes as a Christian, and the two wolves illustrates the struggle *I* feel... I wasn't trying to pose it as biblical truth, if refuting such was your aim.

The whole war between God and the devil, with us in between, aside - the undeniable fact is we struggle internally to choose good, and Christian or not most struggle to remain optimistic and hopeful in times of great depravity and social/moral decline. A quick skim of the prophets demonstrates this struggle, and is found in non-Chrsitan (yet usually praised as wise and insightful) world literature.

I think the wolf story is absolute true. But the fight isn't what you should be concerned about it's truly the feeding you should be concerned about. The easiest first step is to not to feed the evil one
God bless

No one else has anything else to add? No personal experiences of spiritual discipline and strengthening virtue? (I mean character, the mind and the inner workings - training this - more so than outer works of holiness, though that could play a part.)

Don't expect much from the Young Adults forum. There's not a lot of traffic here. You're more likely to receive more feedback on this in Miscellaneous or - *shudder* - the Bible Discussion Forum.

lol Perhaps Misc would be safest... what about Singles'? Would that be a good choice?

I feel your shudder. That's the last place I would have posted this. LOL

Singles has some smart cookies and is pretty well frequented - possibly more so than Miscellaneous. Beware, though! Your thread may derail to a food discussion.

All the best! You can request the thread be moved, but no trouble in cross posting either. :)

There is actually something you can do: Every time the evil one comes up with a thought you think can't be good, you tell him to keep quiet or to leave. I think it's all just a mind thing

Without the desire, temptation does not exist. Who plants the 'desire" or thought? We give power over to satan. WE allow him dominion when GOD gave mankind dominion over this earth. Man decided to rebel against GOD..Man chose to share this earth with the fallen angels who were cast out of heaven, due to pride and wanting to be equal with GOD. However..only in JESUS CHRIST can we have the strength, the power and the victory...struggle as we may. When we fall, we get back up, brush ourselves off, repent and walk on..sometimes over and over again. We have to ask ourselves, "IS my preoccupation with this worth hell fire?" Let's face it..our obsessions are mental, which affects our spiritual, which affects our physical. All three are entwined. I have come to the conclusion that without the Holy spirit, inviting HIM into our worship, into our daily lives, we cannot battle this world alone. Praises of HIS people offer us a chance to draw stability and closeness to GOD, since GOD inhabits those praises. I do find a lack of praise in most churches and the internet. Most use CHRISTIAN websites to find dates and soul mates and ventilate about their disfunctional lives, sadly.
