Did the APA and DSM-5 really declare pedophilia an orientation?
If so, what in the world does this mean?

I originally saw this article in my newsfeed and became troubled by the headline.

But then something told me to dig deeper.
There had to be something more to this.

After surfing the Internet I found a simple explanation.

The APA DSM-5 is trying to draw a distinction between inclinations, and behavior.

Pedophilia in the DSM-5 is a disorder if it's actually acted upon.
It's an orientation if it's not acted upon.

Characteristics of Paraphilic DisordersMost people with atypical sexual interests do not have a mental disorder. To be diagnosed with a para- philic disorder, DSM-5 requires that people with these interests:

• have a sexual desire or behavior that involves another person’s psychological distress, injury, or
death, or a desire for sexual behaviors involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent.

In the case of pedophilic disorder, the notable detail is what wasn’t revised in the new manual. Al- though proposals were discussed throughout the DSM-5 development process, diagnostic criteria ulti- mately remained the same as in DSM-IV TR. Only the disorder name will be changed from pedophilia to pedophilic disorder to maintain consistency with the chapter’s other listings.

I think our initial fear when we hear the word "orientation" applied to Pedophilia, is that somehow that will become normalized like the LGBT sinful lifestyle.

The APA DSM-5 doesn't appear to be going that far.
It's just that their hair splitting has aroused fears.
Very justified fears.

So yes, the APA DSM-5 does appear to label it an orientation, but it's still considered a disorder. That's the other half of the story some of the hysterical news outlets and blogs are not telling you.

Yeah sadly I'm skeptical of stories like these that come from Christian news outlets.
They either forget to give the other half, or don't give it intentionally.
Hopefully it's that they're ignorant of the other half of stories like these.

It's really a self feeding vicious circle.
One outlet puts out a headline.
Then the blogs regurg it.
Then the forums regurg.
It spreads.

ADJUSTMENT OF WORDING OF THE CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE CRITERION FOR THE PARAPHILIAS

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, Revised (DSM-III-R), the criteria sets for the Paraphilias included a clinical significance criterion (i.e., "the person has acted on these urges, or is markedly distressed by them") in recognition of the fact that the mere presence of paraphilic sexual urges or fantasies do not necessarily warrant a diagnosis of a paraphilia in an individual. During the preparation of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), the wording of this criterion was adjusted (i.e.,”the fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning") as part of the effort to adopt uniform wording for the clinical significance criterion across the disorders.
An unforeseen side effect of this rewording was that it led to confusion regarding the DSM-IV definition of Pedophilia. Specifically, the replacement of the DSM-III-R phrase “acts on these urges” with the phrase “causes clinically significant…impairment” was misconstrued to represent a fundamental change in the definition of Pedophilia. Some readers misunderstood this new wording as greatly restricting the number of individuals who would be diagnosed with Pedophilia by requiring that they be distressed by their behavior in order to qualify for the diagnosis. This was clearly never intended, since it is well recognized that many (if not most) individuals with Pedophilia are not distressed by their pedophilic urges, fantasies, and behaviors. In fact, rather than restricting the diagnosis of Pedophilia to fewer individuals, the original purpose of the change was to potentially broaden the diagnosis to include individuals whose pedophilic urges interfered with functioning in a variety of ways (e.g., causing impairment in occupational functioning because of a preoccupation with pedophilic thoughts and images at work). There was never any intention to no longer include individuals who acted on their urges.
To remove any possible ambiguity regarding whether acting out pedophilic urges with others is sufficient for a diagnosis of Pedophilia, the original DSM-III-R wording has been reinstated. Furthermore, the original DSM-III-R wording has been reinstated for other paraphilias that inevitably harm their victims (i.e., voyeurism, exhibitionism, and frotteurism). Because some cases of Sexual Sadism may not involve harm to a victim (e.g., inflicting humiliation on a consenting partner), the wording for sexual sadism involves a hybrid of the DSM-III-R and DSM-IV wording (i.e., “the person has acted on these urges with a non-consenting person, or the urges, sexual fantasies, or behaviors cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty”).

What gets me is the lack of research by christians who just want to be I TOLD YOU SO WE ARE BEING PRESECUTED THE WORLD IS ENDING NOW CHICKEN LITTLE MARTYRS

The Rind et al. controversy was a debate in the scientific literature, public media, and government legislatures in the United States regarding a 1998 peer reviewed meta-analysis of the self-reported harm caused by child sexual abuse (CSA).[1] The debate resulted in the unprecedented condemnation of the paper by both Houses of the United States Congress. In Canada, Dr. Hubert Van Gijseghem, a retired psychologist from the University of Montreal, told the House of Commons Justice Committee in 2011 that pedophilia is a “sexual orientation”.

“Pedophiles are not simply people who commit a small offence from time to time but rather are grappling with what is equivalent to a sexual orientation just like another individual may be grappling with heterosexuality or even homosexuality,” he said.

“We know from experience that yesterday’s unthinkable taboos are today’s ‘alternative lifestyles’. The journey to normalize pedophilia has begun,” the article concluded.

Diane Watts, researcher for REAL Women of Canada, told LifeSiteNews that “pedophilia activists use the same rights language as the other GLBT groups.”

With the bill’s ambiguous language, Watts said that it will be up to the “courts and tribunals to decide what is included in ‘gender identity,’ because it hasn’t been defined clearly.”

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. A group of psychiatrists with B4U-Act recently held a symposium proposing a new definition of pedophilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders of the APA.

B4U-Act calls pedophiles “minor-attracted people.” The organization’s website states its purpose is to, “help mental health professionals learn more about attraction to minors and to consider the effects of stereotyping, stigma and fear.”

In 1998 The APA issued a report claiming “that the ‘negative potential’ of adult sex with children was ‘overstated’ and that ‘the vast majority of both men and women reported no negative sexual effects from childhood sexual abuse experiences.”

Pedophilia has already been granted protected status by the Federal Government. The Matthew Shephard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act lists “sexual orientation” as a protected class; however, it does not define the term.

Republicans attempted to add an amendment specifying that “pedophilia is not covered as an orientation;” however, the amendment was defeated by Democrats. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fl) stated that all alternative sexual lifestyles should be protected under the law. “This bill addresses our resolve to end violence based on prejudice and to guarantee that all Americans, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability or all of these ‘philias’ and fetishes and ‘isms’ that were put forward need not live in fear because of who they are. I urge my colleagues to vote in favor of this rule.”

The White House praised the bill saying, “At root, this isn’t just about our laws; this is about who we are as a people. This is about whether we value one another – whether we embrace our differences rather than allowing them to become a source of animus.”

Earlier this year two psychologists in Canada declared that pedophilia is a sexual orientation just like homosexuality or heterosexuality.....

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have started to ask questions about why taxpayers in the European Union (EU) are being forced to finance a giant homosexual lobbying group with past links to organizations promoting pedophilia. Gay and lesbian activists responded to the concerns by unleashing a wave of attacks.

Researchers using publicly available data found that the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association-Europe (ILGA) received more than two-thirds of its funding directly from taxpayers through the European Commission. When tax money provided by the Dutch government was added in, over 70 percent of the group’s funds last year came from taxpayers. The rest came from billionaire leftist George Soros and two other major donors.

“It appears to be a puppet organization in the hand of a very small group of donors, of which the Commission is the most important one,” noted European human rights lawyer J.C. von Krempach, who shined the spotlight on the issue late last year in a series of articles. “Is this really a ‘non-governmental’ organization, or part of ‘civil society?’ Or is it an inofficial EU Agency?”

Despite the close ties to governments, the lobbying group has a highly controversial past, according to critics. In the 1990s, for example, after international pressure and a global scandal erupted, the ILGA was forced to purge several groups from its membership ranks because their primary mission was promoting pedophilia. Among the more controversial members was the infamous North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), a group which seeks to legalize and normalize pedophilia.

ILGA also fought a long battle to become an officially recognized “non-governmental organization” with the United Nations. Of course, it was repeatedly rejected for its myriad ties to supporters of pedophilia as member governments balked. Eventually pressure from European governments forced the UN to grant accreditation. .....
