Start by saying the Lord's Prayer in a group saying or read the psalms in prayer and it will become easier

OK now I can't be alone in this so I'm gonna ask: Is anyone else petrified of the thought of praying aloud in the presence of others - or am I just weird? Just the thought of it brings me out in a cold sweat. The thought of 1. My audible voice. 2. I just know I won't know what to say and 3. Because I'm so nervous my words will be all jumbled-up. I used to attend a prayer meeting weekly at my church but it got silly because I was the only one who wouldn't pray - so I stopped going. Sometimes at church Sundays one of the pastors in my church will ask us to pray for others - the first time he did this I seriously considered walking out or making it to the restroom - seriously I'm that bad. Since then I have extremely reluctantly (and it's not that I don't want to pray for others, I REALLY do) prayed but I can't find the right words and my prayer is always shorter than everyone else's.

Of course I pray alone, generally in a whisper or very quietly and sometimes just in my head if others are around. Maybe it's the lifetime of not being a Christian or being in a non-Christian environment makes it still a little alien to me but when I pray alone it doesn't feel unnatural, I just can't face praying in front of others.

Really this is a cry for help because I hate being like this, I want to overcome it - HELP!
I am not afraid of public speaking (I do it regularly) neither do I fear public praying but I do not pray publicly...

Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Well....at the end of the day keep your mind on God and don't worry about everybody else....you are praying to the Lord not them and just be honest and speak to him just as you would when you pray in the proverbial (closet)...I used to not be able to read a book report in open class in high school...now I have spoken in front of 600 plus in person and even on radio and cable T.V....possibly 200,000 plus at the same time...The Lord can strengthen you for sure...he will keep you in perfect peace if you keep your mind on him for sure.....!

The one thing that is coming across more than anything else in these replies is to speak as though it were just the Father and me - block out everything and everyone else and pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance.

Thanks everyone for the advice - all good. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to give their thoughts. God bless you all.

What strikes me as funny is.. we say we can pray privately to the Lord with no problem...but if He truly appeared visible while we are praying, I suspect there would all of a sudden be just a bit of a quiver in our voice.

That's one of my problems - the long pauses whilst searching for the right words. I'm no speaker lol
You aren't the only one. Others who do not want any silence do "fill-ins". Like this:

Father God is mentioned at least 10 times in 10 sentences. "Father God, we pray for our church Father God. Make it more alive Father God, etc." I think it is nervousness about letting there be a moment of silence.

There are lots of fill-in words if you think about them.

Sometimes I find myself saying, "Um..." as a fill-in. Like I need to keep making noise?

So let there be silence! After all, we do need to breathe.

I don't think most of us could say a word. Once we looked in His eyes.

But isn't that ironic?
He's just as much with us invisibly as visibly.

(Uh oh, MPW might start shaking in her private prayers to Jesus). :)

No I won't, I'm VERY comfortable in His presence...which just goes to prove He isn't what I'm focused on (well done on helping me see that btw) but the others present.

I know it's so easy to forget that He is always present, a difficult concept to grasp. It's mind boggling to think what he witnesses, in fact I'd rather not think about that lol.

I pray in private and in public... im an intercessor. What happens when I pray is that I tend to weep. It started years ago...and people cry when I pray. Used to worry me but it happens alot. When iam with the spirit in prayer I give all and allow God to pour out His love in me and thru me. Its awesome.

More like the men who fell down as dead men and needed to be helped and strengthened so as to stand......

Yes... its wonderous spending time pouring out your heart to God. Spending time in His presence. So intimate and loving. Its what God always intended. .for us to always be passionately seeking Him and when you experience that, Nothing will make you afraid to pray. Intimacy with the one who is completely faithful and loving. Sigh. Just think that is our destiny in Christ for eternity.

I used to be that way too. I am getting better at it starting with family first. Confidence builds as we do more and more praying with others. I usede to be afraid that my prayers werent said right, but the most important thing is that it comes from the heart. God will take it from there. Blessings hon

Also when you pray..you spend time with the Lord. He brings to light things you don't remember. .it's simply talking to God, having Gods point of view ofa situation..he shows us in His word or spirit the way of His life for us. If we lack in prayer life its like driving your care and not having a destination whether it public or private prayer

Or even being locked out of your car...
