Some believers think all men are eternal but that is not what the Bible says. Jesus said "He who believes in me has eternal life"; so not everybody has eternal life but only those who believe in Jesus.

Well it depends on what you believe happens to non-believers. Just death? Or eternal suffering?

I think the body returns to the dust, the soul goes to Heaven or Hell, and the spirit returns to God.

What about eternal death?

You would think most people would choose to believe in Jesus and live, rather than to do otherwise, wouldn’t you?

Every human soul will exist for ever and be conscious all that time. The only question is where.

Greatkraw is right about the soul and all.

Man is a spiritual being, we have bodies and souls and that's how God want's us to be forever. Our flesh can be destroyed, but our souls will never cease to exist. Based off of the life we live, we will be in heaven or hell for all eternity. Jesus was right, of course, when he says we will have eternal life if we believe in him. If we don't, we will have eternal death. Heaven is life the way it was meant to be, and hell is like death. It is definitely a spiritual death. God is the source of all life, light, and hope...hell is a place apart from God, so it must be the opposite of Heaven. It will be real and we will be conscious as we are alive on earth, but it won't be eternal life in a positive sense like heaven. It will be an eternal existence in torment.

Heaven is an eternal existence in peace, love, bliss, joy, and hope in the presence of the Triune majesty. That is the life of eternal life, and thank Jesus for it.

When Jesus said life - He meant eternally united with God. Death would be separation from God.

When you hear the phrase "spiritually dead", that is referring to someone who does not have a relationship with God - they are not united with Him.

But when someone on Earth dies, that is death - separation from their fleshly body. The second death is - eternal separation from God IE hell.

But Paul says for those of us in Christ..

Philippians 1:21
For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Why? Because we will continue our relationship with God without dealing with the fleshly desires.

That is eternal life (united with God), which begins here on Earth - and never ends.

We are not God, our lives began when we were born not before like hindus say, so we are not eternal unless we really believe in Jesus and receive eternal life.

What happens to those who don't believe in Jesus and reject eternal life, do they cease to exist or are they cast into everlasting punishment as the bible teaches?

Live forever in heaven with all the goodness or live forever in hell forever burning and being tortured.

Since God is merciful there is no eternal torture but a temporal hell, and a total destruction at the lake of fire.

Eternal life is not the same thing as eternal existance. Neither does the word death mean "cease to be".

Okay, if that is what you believe. I don't see how you came across this by reading the bible though.

Jesus the Christ said:

Matthew 10:28
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

So there is no eternal torture in hell, but a total destruction at the end.

Sword over the months I have found you to be the most biblically correct person in this forum, but I have to side with D_C on this one. With all the overwhelming scripture supporting eternal punishment how could you or anyone else believe otherwise. I do see where if you isolated this verse from the rest of scripture how someone might believe in annihilation, but when you look at scripture as a whole you cannot come to that conclusion.

I'm not sure if this is a question or a comment. If you ascribe to the belief that there is a difference between Sheol and Hell (which I do), than do the scriptures still point to eternal suffering? Or is the suffering only in Sheol and, as Sword said, Hell meant for destruction? This is the reason I answered the way I did earlier, because I don't know for sure if a ****ed soul is an eternal soul or a destroyed soul.

I believe that all who die end up in Sheol and then are raised on judgment day before being sent to their final destination. I'm in no way an expert on this, but the passages I've read pointed me in this direction. I haven't studied it much though because I don't think it's a salvation matter.
