Fear of God does not mean being scared of God. The user nogard had a good intuition on what fear of God meant for the Jews: great respect and reverence that come out of love for God.

Again..............wrong.............but I'm seeing a pattern of that in your comments...........

The only pattern you see is my beliefs not matching up with yours. We are to fear not, and be not afraid.

My lady, respect does not come out of fear, but love. Have you ever heard the expression "it's better to be feared than respected"? They are of contrasting emotions.

Fear is the BEGINNING of wisdom. In other words knowledge and obedience to God starts out with us all being scared! More specifically being scared of death.
I am saying that fear MEANS respect. I looked it up in a dictionary and it said that another word for fear is respect. I think we are saying the same thing just using different words.

the reverence of Yah, an im getting this from an old bible encyclopedia, because I also wondered about this.

Is a righteous fear, not the kind of fear that one has when a burglar is around and there being a fear of something evil but rather a respectful fear knowing His judgements and works are perfect.

The easiest way for me to understand was thinking about the different fear I had when I did something I was not supposed to in front of my fleshly dad as opposed to making a street "thug" angry. In front of my fleshly dad he will correct me in a way that is best for me, a street "thug" will try to "correct my pocketbook" for him.... I can fully explain but that kind of inner feeling difference...

oh and the Most High sits on a THRONE, He created everything.... Imagine standing in front of HIS THRONE.....

reverence?

I loved my (natural) father very much, BUT I had a very healthy fear of him should I misbehave. I did not like his discipline, no one likes to be disciplined, BTt, especially in retrospect, I NEEDED IT! I tell my kids all the time, if I didn't love you I would care a less if you stayed up til 3:00 playing video games, went out and got high, skipped school etc... We have fatherless neighborhood kids who have this sort of home life. And I can assure you they WISH they had a father they could have a healthy fear of.

I know you two are old enough to read the definitions of these two words and see that they are COMPLETELY different. Why force something you can see isn't true?

Enen Paul mentioned that those who fear are but babes in Christ, where there is strife!

About the fear and respect thing, I dont agree with them being the same because respect is a feeling of trust, faith and love, and fear is a feeling of terror, feeling that if you dont follow you will be hurt. Though, yes, God does have a wrath and it does include pain, He has told us that He is saving us from it, if we follow Christ.

I do think there is a bit of truth in the idea of it being a respect thing. Not that we fear punishment, but that we fear doing wrong to the One that loves us so much He died for us. When I sin, I feel bad, like, why should I even ask for mercy when I dont deserve it. I feel like a lowly being not even worth the time Hes willing to give. And that is what motivates me to not sin. Not punishment, but the fact that my sin is equal to spitting in the face of God for everything He has given me. I love and respect Him so much that I really do want to honor the wonderful, undeserved gift He has given me.

But, like many others have said, fear does play a part in Gods plan, imo. God tells us He does not simply want us to follow His will, but understand it. With me, I was terrified, and stopped doing what I was because I merely didnt want to be damned. So through fear I followed Him. But as I continued to follow Him, I actually came to understand why I was wrong, and why God really is doing whats best, and came to understand Him and love Him better.

I agree that fear is the beginning of wisdom. Our people must come to fear Him before we actually start to consider WHY God believes in righteousness, sadly :p

I understand what you mean. My father would have kicked my backside, and yes growing up I was scared of him. I was fearful. But what I am trying to illustrate is that the respect did not come from fear. As I grew up, and began to truly understand WHY he did the things he did and acted the way he did towards me, out of LOVE, came reverence and respect as I came to know that he first loved me! This love then cast away the fear and the memory of being afraid of my dad.

Lol, so in EVERY definition, "FEAR" is defined by the same word, "FEAR!?"

Are you serious??? Lol!!! If someone kicks in your door one night and hog ties you and your family up, I guess you are going to "respect" the hell out of him!

I'm saying think, people! This is NOT rocket science!

"Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12:28-29)

First of all, "reverence" AND "godly fear" are NOT the same thing.

Secondly, God gives us GRACE that we might SERVE HIM ACCEPTABLY with REVERENCE AND GODLY FEAR.

Lastly, God does the same because "OUR GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE".

Yes, our God is the same exact God of the Old Testament:

"For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God." (Deuteronomy 4:24)

Sorry but I passed a long time ago the age when I look up in the dictionary for words such as "fear".

I am interested in how did the Jews understand the fear of God and it has nothing to do with the definitions from the dictionary.

So, next time you want to talk about the vast subject of "fear of God", I expect you come with something more interesting and intelligent.

Yes but my love for the Lord over shadows any fear I may have
Thats awesome. And if you have that kind of LOVE for the Lord, than i am sure you do not obey His enemy the devil and commit sins which you know is against Him.
i too love Him, and because i love Him, i do all things to please Him, i obey Him, i do not obey His enemy the devil.

part of loving God is fearing (being in awe of) God..........fearing God is acknowledging who God is...........
Are you aware that the word Fear taken to the Hebrew or Greek NEVER translates into Awe, Respect, or even Reverence.
Man changes the words in Scriptures to fit their own beliefs.
Fear means fear. But leave it to this generation to CHANGE the Word of God to fit into what they believe the Truth is.
