To start with, I would personally, not get too concerned with affiliating yourself with any particular brand of church. All of them are comprised of humans, and just like the humans that make up them, they all have different opinions.
And, unfortunately, so does anyone telling you about them. It is this last part that will most likely be the most problematic for you. And it is pretty important that you find one that fits who you are, rather than what one of us tells you to believe.
All churches (including the Catholic, JW, Mormon and then all the "regular" churches) have "some" truth and some misunderstandings... and in a nutshell, none of them are right. Why? Because Jesus didn't invent "churches". He called men to Himself, USING a term translated as them becoming a "church". This is an unfortunate thing, in that now we all feel the "church" we belong to is what He was talking about... when He had nothing, at all, in mind even close to what we have made that word in our reality.
A certain part of the Bible says that faith comes through hearing, and it says that such hearing will be the word of God. Well, just like anything in the Bible, you are going to have to learn to really read all that is said. The first part of that saying (verse; passage; Scripture) is true..... BUT, it is true of more than just the Bible. We humans have a tendency to trust the first thing we hear. This is why it is often said that you need to be the first person to talk to the police. Your impression will be foremost in their subsequent investigation. Hitler turned an entire nation of good, honest, upright citizens against the Jews by nothing more than written and spoken claims he made sure the people heard over and over again.
I hope if you remember ANYTHING this old man says, it is that you DO NOT believe something just because you read it....... No, not even in the Bible. What we all read is not the words the Ancients wrote. What we have are certain men's understandings of what they said, and these often esoteric understandings were passed down to us bearing the taint, however slight it might be, of the personal religious views of those men. And this goes for every single translation.
Just as an example, turn in your Bible to Luke 14:26. It says there, that to be a disciple of Jesus' you must HATE your entire family. Well, I hope you know this is totally wrong. It does not even fit in the teaching of Jesus.
Now, the words (as originally spoken in Aramaic [the language Jesus spoke] and written in Greek [the language most of the New Testament was written in]) are absolutely true. But, remember, we are not reading Greek. The translators misunderstood the implication of using the word, "HATE" back in those days, and to THAT audience..... so they just put what they saw in the Bible we now read.
For us today, it would more realistically read, "Oh I HATE going to Grandmother's at Thanksgiving."..... When we really mean "I love staying at home for Thanksgiving more than I do going to Grandmother's." So, the verse, Luke 14:26, really MEANS.....
"If you do not love me more than you do even the members of your own family, you cannot truly consider yourself my disciple."
The danger I am trying to point out of just accepting and believing whatever you read is that you may not actually be reading what the author really meant. And there are multiple incidences of this all through the Bible. Do you know there honestly ARE people who feel they are required to hate people who are not Christians, even their own families? Sadly, that is very true.
So, read a Bible, by all means... but also write down anything that seems odd, and go to multiple sources to make sure of the accurate meaning of what may have confused you. Never just accept what you read or hear without satisfying yourself that you fully understand the words set down.
And, (this will take some time (and use) to understand), this thing of "prayer" will many times lead you right to a source for understanding what you read. To people who have not become comfortable with relying upon prayer, it often DOES seem strange..... but it is no more than just talking to God like He was a friend sitting in the chair next to you. Don't get hung-up on it being all mystical and Spiritual. It honestly is just talking to your Heavenly Daddy.
Enough for now... this is turning into a book, and I detest that sort of thing.
