Hello Singles!!

I'm pleased to officially announce the beginning of The Singles Forum Zombie Thread Challenge!!!

What's that, you don't like seeing zombie threads here in singles? Here is a chance to do something positive about it!

I originally posted my thoughts for this in Fenner's thread about making people feel unwelcome. Here's an excerpt:

I've actually been thinking about this and would like to make it an official challenge.

Anyone out there who is regularly annoyed by zombie threads, here's your chance to make a change in a positive direction!!!

Here are the guidelines of The Challenge:

1. Write 5 threads and 1 poll about topics that have never before been discussed in the Singles forum but are still on-subject with being single within the next month (this would mean the deadline is May 16.)

2. Send me (or include it in your threads) the link for at least 1 post you've made in a resurrected zombie thread in which you stated your dislike of seeing zombie threads resurrected.

3. If you meet these very simple requirements (I mean, they SHOULD be simple, right? Seeing as people seem to think it must be so easy to do) and are willing to give me your address, I will personally send you $20. Due to limited funds :), I must limit this to the first person who accomplishes this.

I'm anxious to see if anyone will try and I will forever be in awe of the person who attempts this!!!!

Remember, your threads and polls have to be COMPLETELY NEW topics that pertain to single life and yet have NEVER been discussed here before and do not show up when we run a forum search on your threads.

Ready, set, go!!!

I am very happy to report that so far, one brave soul has told me privately that they are officially entering The Challenge.

However, after talking to this wonderful person about opening up the challenge to everyone, here are some changes I decided to make:

1. You DO NOT have to be someone who hates zombie threads in order to enter this challenge. EVERYONE is welcome.

2. Just to clarify, yes, you must write 5 "regular" threads AND 1 additional thread with a poll (which is technically 6 threads in all.) I am officially running this challenge from April 16 to May 16, so anyone who wrote a thread yesterday is welcome to enter and count their thread from yesterday if it meets the challenge!

3. Because the person who has already entered DID meet all the original requirements (including sending me their original post in which they said they dislike zombie threads), here is how I'm going to award the prizes:

* 1st place -- $20.
* TWO additional 2nd places for $10 each. Yes, this means that technically there could be 3 winners. I am going to require though that anyone who wants to enter MUST declare that they are doing so, either here or in a message to me privately.
* BONUS of $10 for any of the winners who can produce/send me a copy of their original post stating that they hate zombie threads. If all three winners can do this, they will each get the original stated prize PLUS $10.

Many had suggested I enter the challenge myself (one generous member even offered to send $20 to my favorite charity), but I am going to have to decline seeing as I will be working extra hours in order to pay for this challenge. :) Although if I were entering, this would definitely be my first thread. ;) You are welcome to prove me wrong, but I'm guessing this hasn't been done before!!!

The overall goal here is to hopefully see some positive contributions and interesting discussions here in our beloved Singles Forum. I'm now leaving this thread open for discussion and hopefully announcements of who would like to participate! :) Remember that you can also do so privately to me if you don't wish to announce it publicly (although, as we hopefully see the forum flooded with threads... We'll know why!)

Best wishes, and here's to seeing some brand-new, LIVING threads!!! (May the Undead [threads] rest in peace.) :p

P.S.

I also realize that if we have more than 3 people who enter and everyone meets the challenge, we are going to have to start "choosing" winners and I admit I'm unsure of how to do this, especially if, let's say, 20 people entered.

So, if we have more than 3 people who meet the challenge, what should we do? Take a vote? I'm hesitant to do this because then it winds up being a popularity contest...

I know I had originally said I would give the prize to whoever met the challenge first but I realize that this might reduce the quality of the threads, because people will be cranking them out as soon as possible in order to try to win.

So... any suggestions as to how the winners should be determined? (That is, if we have more than 3 people who enter...)

How about choosing winners based on the total number of responses to the people's threads (own posts not counting of course)? The test of a good thread topic after all is the discussion it generates. It's a vote by participation system.

That's an awesome idea, Cinder!!

The only reason I'm hesitant is because some people (cough, cough... uh... certainly not ME :)) like to post longer or more serious threads than others, and for obvious reasons (most people don't like to read longer posts), those threads always get less traffic than shorter and/or humorous threads. Something I have to always remind myself as well is that participation can't be seen as the only measure of a thread's quality.

However, this is an awesome suggestion and one that will definitely be considered if we should have a flood of participants. :) Does anyone else have additional suggestions as well?

I was also thinking that people who haven't complained about zombie threads should have a fair shot at the $10 bonus as well... any ideas as to what that bonus could be based on?

One of the reasons I decided to drop asking people to send me a link to their posts declaring their dislike of zombie threads is because I realized they'd probably have to sort through quite a few zombie threads themselves in order to find them... and I wouldn't want anyone to go into convulsions because of having to do so! :p

You and 2 unbiased people judging who posted the most interesting/best new threads?

Right... exactly!!!

This is exactly why I'm asking for input as to how we can choose the winners! Because the subjects I'm interested in others may have zero preference for at all, and vice versa... Short, funny threads almost always get more traffic and better responses than longer ones... So... this is why the floor has been opened for discussion. :)

I DO very much appreciate that one person said since I'm the one hosting and paying for the challenge, it should be my own discretion, but I wanted people's opinions on how to pick a winner fairly.

We might be counting chickens before the eggs have even rolled in though... We also have to see how many people enter. :)

What's the old saying?

Go big or go home! (Or maybe head on over to the Bible Discussion Thread...) :D:p

It would be kinder just to banish them to outer darkness than condemn them to the Bible Debate forum.

I'm volunteering myself to NOT be judge because I'm too busy teaching and haven't been able to be on much. That's also why I'm volunteering myself to NOT be a participant in this competition.

Also, someone mentioned earlier about the popularity of a thread. Sometimes threads are popular because of the person posting. Some threads I feel, tend to not be read, simply because either the person is not well known, or people don't like that person, for whatever reason.

Bingo! If Persnickety (Arwen) were still here, she would win this contest hands down because that's how her threads roll! (the Streams of Consciousness & Thoughts thread is hers). Now if that same thread was started by.. oh i dont know.. Ayotunde from Botswana, it may have been slightly less popular..

Viola, I'm giving you an honorable mention just for posting here. :)

I can think of several people who would be good contenders... and I also realize people may not have the time.

But the entire purpose of this challenge is to try to get people to do something constructive in response to all the complaints about zombie threads.

Unique and original topics not discussed on the singles forum that have to do with being single?

I could totally do three of those, but you guys would know how weird I really am.
