Amen to that for sure........I agree.......the first thing on the list is eternal salvation for all true believers........not that difficult for sure....

It is so important the apostle paul spent a few chapters writing to the Ephesians about it (especially chapter 1) and John mentions it many times in one of his letters, As a loving father he wrote "I wrote these things so you MAY KNOW YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE, That our HOPE was ETERNAL LIFE.. that GOD who CAN NOT LIE PROMISED ETERNAL LIFE BEFORE TIME BEGAN etc etc..

yet these people claim it is a lie to profess you have it, and it is a lie that it is eternal.

Hey dcontroversal, I hope things are well with you. After reading your post, it seems to be a little incomplete. While we were born in sin and deserving of eternal death, something is wrong if we continue to sin and therefore not become good through God. Paul mentions in Romans 6:1-2 that God will not continually cover our sins with His goodness if we continue to sin. I'm not just talking about constant sin, I mean an occasional, every once in a while sin also. At some point sin has to cease in your life completely (1 Peter 4:1) or Jesus will not consider you to have suffered like Him and therefore you will no longer be worthy of a reward like Him (2 Tim. 2:12). For instance, for me to tell people only "Thou shalt not" without convering what they should do. Without knowing what they should do, they can't fully understand the mentality of what they shouldn't do. It just becomes a cold listing to them with no life.

While I understand that man is not inherently good and incapable of producing good on his own, it is incomplete to not cover how man can become good through Jesus.

Ephesians 1 begins with likening us to orphans/bastards. When you were an orphan, you had no lineage or inheritance. Once I adopted you, not only was my home extended to you, but also my good name, an inheritance and my discipline. I taught you my ways so that you could become just like me. If I was a good man and taught you how to take on the nature of a good man, then why wouldn't you become a good man through my way and not of your own doing and understanding?

It is important to tell what we take on when we are true worshippers of Christ and not just what we were without Him.

Hymenaeus and Philetus. Hymeanaeus is mentioned only twice and Philetus once, yet neither is spoken of as trying to make their way back to a sinful life. Why does Paul regard them as blasphemers and delivered them to Satan (1 Tim. 1:20)? What does he list as their sin? Are they drunkards, or adulterers, or murderers or thieves? Were they con artists? Paul simply says that they erred in understanding scripture. But not just erred, they spread their misunderstanding to others who in turn, readily believed them. How many people will readily believe that no one can live without sinning at all after Jesus?

There are two types of unbelievers that infect others:
1) Those that are true ministers of satan (2 Cor. 11:14-15) and condemned of old (Jude 4) such as King Ahab. Evil men.
2) Those that don't mean to be evil, but spread incorrect understanding because of their misunderstanding such as Hymenaeus, Philetus and even the Apostle Paul and Apollos.

Remember, Paul considered himself to be the worst sinner, not because he did something so horrific, but because he affected others with his misunderstanding (1 Cor. 15:9). What separated Paul and Apollos from Hymenaeus and Philetus? They were willing to consider the truth and change.

Titus 2:12
1 John 3:6-9
1 Cor. 15:34
2 Cor. 7:1 - How can I perfect holiness and not become a good man through Jesus?

Let us no longer misunderstand Romans 3:10. Almost everyone speaks it out of context. If Romans 3:10 is still true about you then so is Romans 3:11. How can one be saved if they don't even seek God or understand anything about God? Paul was speaking of how people are before they are saved, not how people are continually. He was trying to get the Romans and us to understand why we needed Jesus, because we were inadequate before. But that was before. You should not still come up short if one is saved.
hey je1979,

I read your post, and your missing something. or should I say adding something?

A person who has true faith in God would never continue in sin, John makes this clear in his epistle, he is a child born of God and thus can not sin. It is only those who continue in sin who are not saved, yet again, John said they not only do not know God. they never have.

Be careful when you talk about sin, and even more careful when you talk about what one must do to be saved, don;t add your own work (stopping sin, or keeping sin free) to that equation, or else your trusting in a false gospel not from God. but a self centered gospel taught by men and originated by Satan himself.

I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
I was found by those who did not seek me.
To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, 'Here am I, here am I.'

Hey posthuman, how's it going? The passage you used was prophecy of God including us Gentiles into His plans one day. It is currently being used out of context. Romans 3 spoke of every human's state prior to him or her individually being saved. There's a difference.

errors or faults and not about serious sin that would cause one to not inherit the Kingdom of God.

oh so now you can be saved with unrepentant sin, as long as it's only "little sins" not serious ones?
lol.

Jason, that would mean that some people have no need of Christ. why do you think David asks to be cleansed of hidden faults? i think it's because unless one is cleansed of all sin, ones they are conscious of as well as ones they are not, they cannot enter into His presence, because He is fully holy, not just mostly holy.

this passage in Psalms and the first several chapters of Romans illustrate clearly for us that we have desperate need of a Savior, whether we are particularly aware of it or not. how wonderful it is that our Redeemer lives! that He came and walked among us, and is willing to wash us! who else is able??

Yes, exactly. Romans 3:10 cannot be talking about how nobody is righteous in the present tense. It is talking about how we were before we were saved. For if that was not the case, (and nobody is righteous) then we have to also make Romans 3:11 say that there is nobody that understands (Which is not true) and that there is nobody that seeks after God (Which is also not true).
You all skip the 2 most important verses in the passage.

[SUP]22 [/SUP]even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all[SUP][h][/SUP] who believe. For there is no difference; [SUP]23 [/SUP]for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [SUP]24 [/SUP]being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus

1. It is not your righteousness (which are filthy rags) but Gods righteousness (the work of Jesus)
2. It is given to you, not earned by you
3. It is only given to those who have faith in Christ, not to those who have stopped sin
4. it is a declaration of God you are innocent of all crimes against God (justified)
5. It was paid for by the death of Christ, and it is freely given, not earned by you tryingn to replace christs righteousness with yours.

Get off your high horses. Repent, and recieve the gift of God (which is eternal life) or continue to suffer the death caused earned by the wage of sin.

Yes, eph 1 should be a comfort to us all. all those things paul said were given to us at the moment of faith which can never be taken away!

don't tell Jason this, his whole gospel will crumble, because he will have to repent before God. Remember, Jason does not have hidden sins, he has mistakes and oopsies.

yeah, us Gentiles who did not seek Him, who did not understand Him, and who were up to no good.

Romans 6 speaks of being having a life in Christ - not apart from Him. Romans 10 speaks of a righteousness (implied: a 'goodness') that does not come from ourselves, but from God. Paul says this maybe more directly in Philippians 3:9 -- "
not having a righteousness of my own" -- but one that is through Christ.

that doesn't make "me" good - it is God alone who is good, and now, He that lives in me, not myself that lives, because "me" is dead ((Romans 6 again)).

the only reason you can say your state has changed now is that you have been born into a new person, a person who is good -- and that person is Christ, not you. does that make sense?

What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin (Rom 3:9)

But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. (Gal 3:22)

Hey eternally,
Thanks for the help. I didn't add anything though. To add myself into the situation is foolishness as I have nothing to offer that is good on my own. It's like, you can get water to drink from the toilet, but who knowingly would drink it? The problem is that the toilet was the source. I'm like the toilet. But when God uses me, I'm not the toilet anymore. That's why I post so many verses in my responses. Like LeVar Burton used to say on Reading Rainbow, "You don't have to take my word for it". The OP and many others don't believe that refraining from sin the remainder of one's days is a requirement for salvation so I addressed that with scripture. It is impossible for me to have gotten refraining from sin from a false god. Sin is the only tool that Satan has. He won't win by telling us to refrain from it. Unfortunately, it's still possible to sin even if you are a true worshipper. What John was saying was that if you abide by the holy seed that has been planted in you (the word), then you will not exercise that ability to still sin. That is done by the word, Spirit, grace and mercy of God. See, no self in the picture. Once again, thanks. I believe you were sincerely trying to make sure I don't miss out. I appreciate that.

the Lord has done a new thing, will you believe it? (Isaiah 43:16-21, Romans 10:17-21)
our goodness is not our own; our understanding is not our own; our righteousness is not our own; our justification is not our own.
all these things are accounted to us through Christ by faith, and worked in us by Him according to His grace.
who can answer a call that has not been called? He made the ear that hears.

so who can understand except God open their eyes? who can seek God unless He reveal Himself to them? who can come to Him unless the Father draws them?
so no one can boast, except to say "i have been known of Him, and He has shown me mercy, and I have known Him" (Jeremiah 9:24, 1 Corinthians 1:31, 2 Corinthians 10:17)
You still do not understand. I am not claiming my own righteousness. That would be silly not to mention futile. I am claiming the righteousness of God working thru me. For without Christ, I can do nothing.

A believer is not above His Master. He cannot rebel and do evil against God and be in favor with him. That would make him no different than an unbeliever. True repentance needs to happen in a believer's life. If not, then they have not obeyed the gospel.

no. i am saying that apart from God enlightening a person and making the dead live,
apart from His Work in a person, they are unable to understand or seek.

My problem was you used the key phrase, "If we continue in sin" My response was to that.

That claims we can somehow lose salvation if we continue in sin, which is not true. We can not lose it, for if it can be lost it must be earned. (remember pauls warning about not being a FOOL and try to perfect your salvation in the flesh)

and I disagree about your interpretation of John also. He did not say only if you abide, he said plainly a child of God can not sin (the language would be continued active or living in) because they are born of God. Remember, he said those who sin (again the language is continued active or living in ) has NEVER SEEN God, nor have they EVER KNOWN God. These people were never saved, you can not lose something you have never had.

Hope this clarifies what I was trying to say, sorry if I was not more clear.

i'm a bit wary of judging a heart... been there, done that, unfortunately.

but it does seem there are folks who do not understand the Righteousness of Christ that comes by faith.

what does it mean to obey the Gospel?
A part of obeying the doctrine (Gospel) that is given to us involves being a slave or a servant to righteousness.

For the Scriptures say,

"God be thanked, that you were the servants of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, you became the servants of righteousness."

For in our old life, we were servants to sin. But sin shall not have dominion over us. For Jesus Christ was manifested to destroy the works of the devil in a believer's life.
