I'm very serious. You're a paternalist just like most liberals. You don't think our Black brothers and sisters can make it on their own so you feel the need to look after them and make sure they're coddled to your liking. Coddle them just enough to still need you, but not enough whereby they become independent and thus ultimately turn against your paternalist ways.

Just watch mommy dearest to get the idea of a paternalist. It's all about power and control thru fear and intimidation. They just do it with a smile on their face and joy in their voice. They don't get out the hangers until one is fully under their power with no hope and has no means of escape......similar to a child.

The effects of punishment on recidivism

Incarceration Within American and Nordic Prisons: Comparison of National and International Policies | ENGAGE

It's amazing how certain people can hear or read statements and compute in their heads something totally different from what those statements were. Where did I say he didn't have a right to free speech? Although I should point out that private web forums do not have free speech, it only means the government can't abridge anything.

The word inflammatory means a statement specifically designed to make people angry or upset. Try working on your reading comprehension.
Your reference links are just one point of view and not "settled Fact." Just saying.

As well, YOU are the one who DETERMINED what Sirk's "intent" was for posting this thread. You ASSUMED you KNEW what was in his mind and heart.............so, yes, you WERE trying to violate his right to free speech by LABELING his INTENT as FLAMING.!

My reading comprehension is just fine thank you................. And Sirk is correct, going in circles......or, as I would say.....

Does it matter what crime is committed? If they are out on parole can they vote?...or do they have to be completely out of the system?
As far as I know if the convict is not a current resident of a DOC facility they can vote. I've lived in CO for sixteen and a half years and have been a convicted felon for 15 of those years. In that time I have only failed to vote in two elections one because I was sitting in jail for a felony on election day (my second election cycle here) and the other because I lost track of what the date was and failed to get my mail in ballot dropped off.

I did read them. First was a liberal leaning article from Canada, and the second was authored by several liberal folks......as I said, they are just "one point of view."

Still, your sarcastic dig is funny................and my comment remains

No, I am not a Democrat nor have I ever tended to left wing politics.

I have been a registered Republican (not that I fully agree with them, it just gives me the right to vote in the primaries) since I was 18 and am a card carrying life member of the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation (not that I'm allowed to own firearms anymore).

The fact that ended up with a felony conviction had nothing to do with my (or anyone's) political ideologies, but was due to my increasingly bad decisions over a period of time.

I would agree with the premise that left leaning policies in the legal system (blaming society for crime rather than the criminals) tend to aid and abet criminal behavior in many circumstances because it tends to remove the personal responsibility of the perpetrator.

Sorry to violate the premise of your thread.

No you didn't read them. You obviously never even bothered clicking the links because reading them in less then an hour, as per your claim, is mathematically impossible. You then brand them "liberal" which is ridiculous nonsense because one is a scientific study from the Canadian government during Stephen Harper's term. I'll forgive you if you don't know who he is since it's obvious you aren't very well read. The second is from an apolitical sociology journal. What they do contain are hard data and many many references.

If you are going to lie at least make it a plausible one. Like I said I never expected you to actually bother examining them, as that would require a mindset open to learning and the ability to process information that isn't bite sized. At least you didn't disappoint me, because I hate to be wrong.

Also:

We have the pot-kettle analogy in Canada and Ireland, I just don't respond to irrelevant nonsense. "The Pot calling the kettle black" is when one person condemns another for a flaw they also possess. Since I didn't call you anything it is a non-sequitur.

I'm going to guess you know even less about how prisons function in the U.S. than you know about climate change. I spent nearly a decade working for the Department of Corrections in the State of California. This is where you get to view me as an expert on the topic, while you are merely sitting in the peanut gallery tossing out links that don't paint an accurate picture of prison operations in the U.S.

First, in regards to the OP, I do not believe the majority of criminals identify as Democrats. I would guess that almost the entire prison population has never voted or could tell you the difference between a Democrat and a Republican.

So people actually need to do studies to prove that the longer you lock someone up, the more they become institutionalized and the more they learn trade craft from other inmates, and the more likely they are going to become recidivists. Brilliant. Also, whatever recidivism rates prison administrators are giving out, you can bet the actual rates are higher. A significant number of inmates are released from prison and then they go live with a relative in another state, where they begin committing more crimes. The state they were locked up in will likely not call them a recidivist. The same holds true about the many convicts who get out of prison and soon after are murdered. They are considered non-recidivists. Then there are the following statistics; a burglar averages 20 burglaries for every time he gets caught once. He gets arrested 5 times, on average, before he is convicted and sentenced. So he may get away with nearly 100 burglaries before he goes to prison. That's an average burglar. A good burglar can make a fairly successful career out of breaking into homes. So when a guy learns a few new tricks in prison and gets out of prison, he can keep being a criminal for decades without being caught. Again, he's not showing up as a recidivist.

Most prisons are warehouses. They quit wasting money on rehabilitation programs years ago. It's because prison populations have changed dramatically. The criminal justice system is so overloaded in the U.S. that they do everything they can to avoid sending low level criminals to prison. But what they consider low level prisoners are people who would have gone to prison for years a couple of decades ago. Our cities are overflowing with violent predators who have been released from prison after serving only part of their sentences. They use to call it good behavior. Now, as long as you don't murder a prison guard, you are considered to have good behavior. The prison population in the U.S. is made up primarily of the worst of the worst. Violent sociopaths. Men you never want to cross paths with.

European prisons are more like Disneyland. Boatloads of mostly non-violent offenders. Drunks and drug users and thieves. The sort of offenders that are put on probation in the U.S. Part of the reason is they don't all carry weapons. Guns are used to resolve a lot of differences in the U.S. Sometimes even petty disagreements are resolved in a hail of gunfire. I saw two guys at a Circle K buying gas, who got into an argument over who was going to win that nights televised middle weight fight. The argument ended in murder. Seven blocks from our home, two young men involved in the drug trade, settled a dispute by pulling pistols and firing at each other. After 12 rounds, one was dead and the other will be spending the remainder of his life in prison. These stories are typical in the U.S. and almost unheard of in Europe. Again, they don't have much to do with politics or political parties.

The answer is not to reduce sentences in hopes of reducing recidivism. The answer is to keep these monsters locked up as long as you can. Taxpayers overwhelmingly support building as many prisons as it takes. However, there is a way to reduce the cost of incarcerating violent criminals. We could ask Mexico to construct a series of prisons along their northern border and ship part of our prison population to them. Allow human rights organizations to approve of the prison and make sure inmates are getting their meals and medical attention. You'd probably reduce the cost of housing inmates by over 50%.

People sure like to misuse idioms around here.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you recently heard the term "peanuts gallery" and now like to use it as much as possible, thinking it is an slight on ones intelligence. The term "peanuts gallery" comes from the days of vaudeville and refers to the cheap seats. Because these seats were so cheap they tended to attract the poorest and ostensibly loudest people. Today they use the term to refer to the audience "Quiet, no comments from the peanuts gallery" and such. Not the nicest expression but it doesn't mean what you think it means, uneducated/ignorant/stupid.

Like the other poster you clearly never read the studies because they don't say the things you are assuming they do. You having worked as a prison guard means very little considering American prisons have the lowest hiring standards of any prisons in the industrialized world. The average prison guard has only a mere eight weeks of training and low education. I have studies for this as well that you can ignore and then attack me on.

I am of the belief that if a person is going to put down someones intelligence they should have the credentials to back it up.

You don't.

You having worked in a prison makes you no more an expert on the social sciences then blog reading has made you an expert on climate change. I don't know if you were called stupid a lot as a child or have some sort of other trauma that makes you the way you are, but you clearly have a desperate need to feel smarter than you actually are. Not only that but you also need to make others feel stupider than you. You talk a tremendous amount with no substance and insult people who disagree with you. You're not a great thinker, you're not a scientist and you have no hope whatsoever of ever becoming such. You don't fool me for a second. You are very small and I feel sorry for you.

I don't think you're uneducated. I think you're very educated based on your writing style as well as the fact that you like to point it out every chance that presents itself to you.... lol. I think what the issue is where and by whom you were educated ....that and how resort to immature taunting because you hold your precious little world view like Gollum....MY PRECIOUS!

I wonder who Shammy will come back as next time? My advice is ditch the Irish nationality and 20-something age though I do suppose the sex change was a step in the right direction.

Maybe your arguments will be more convincing as an old Sri Lankan man, staunch in his secular humanism but blunted by the humility that typically comes with age.

That's what I would do, but it's up to you, man. Peace and love.

To the person who said "you need help" in the reputation comments, I would like to point out that WFB would hang with Arthur Schlesinger.

He also threatened to sock Gore Vidal in the [expletive] face. Oh to bring back the good old days.
