I've had so many different styles in my life, super short, very long, shaved on one side, long on the other. We used to put Sun In , in our hair. Which is peroxide that is supposed to turn your hair blonde in the sun. One time I colored my hair and went swimming and it turned green. I'm surprised all of my hair didn't fall out.

I would say you can't really go wrong with hair that falls around your shoulders. At any age :) It also leaves you with a lot of room to play...curl it, put it up, wear it out, straighten it. It's often easier to manage than shorter/longer styles and usually more versatile as well.

If you do go shoulder-ish length...the next question will be....layers or no layers?!

Haha. I HAVE to layer mine! My hair is so fine that it looks really really weird if it's not layered.

But...you have to get a good hairdresser that gets it right and blends the layers, otherwise it looks awful!

i used to have long hair. then, it 2010, i chopped off 10 inches. i haven't been back to long hair again lol.

my hair has it's own ideas. i just let it be now. lol

I have a daughter who has hair to the tops of her thighs. But she is 21. I told her keep it that way as long as you can, and as long as you think it looks good to you and you want to take care of it. I think hair that long is such a blessing. I finally had to give it up by 25, just dragged my face down and made me look super tired. If you look good, you like it and want to care for it, keep it. I wouldn't care what anybody else thought, even my husband/boyfriend. You're the one who needs to feel good about how you look.

There seemed to be a stigma at one time about a woman having her hair too short, but I just don't see that so much anymore. Even young girls often have really short hair. Mine is short with the top being spiky and I've even had men compliment it. I've also seen women in their 60's with long gray or white hair, and that is beautiful.

I have layers in my hair, mainly because I feel like when it's all the same length, mine looks somewhat dull. Plus, since I do ponytail it a lot, I like the tips coming to a taper rather than all ending at the same length. So it's layers for me! :D

BUT! How many layers? How far apart to layer? Face framing or all the way around the back? Cut to a V or straight across the bottom? Ahhhhh.....

Grace - Looking at your picture on page 2, I have a hard time imagining you with a different hairstyle. The long straight hair looks good on you. You're very pretty, and I think your current style works for you. I don't envy you for the amount of work it must take to maintain hair like that with washing, conditioning, and keeping split ends at bay, but I personally have a hard time imagining a much shorter style. With the hair being so straight, lobbing it off might look like...you lobbed it off.

I don't really know what I'm talking about though. This conversation reminds me it's time to go out on the porch with the clippers and buzz my scalp.

Thank you! It's odd, but this longer style is much easier for me than shorter cuts. I can trim it myself (haven't been to a salon in years), it's too straight to really ever get tangled, and I wash just the roots most of the time, so the ends stay pretty healthy. When my hair was short I had all sorts of curling and stuff to do so it wouldn't turn the wrong way and look weird. So, I'm relieved to hear that other people think it suits me.

(It's hard for me to imagine myself with another hairstyle too. It would take a lot of bravery to do anything very drastic.)

I suppose that everyone has their opinions about hair length and personally I would love it if my wife had hair your length Grace. I got her to grow it out a bit but then when we got a heat wave late in August she hacked it off to about the length of Fenner's hair.

Grace, I would suggest that since you're not ready for anything drastic but would like to try something new, get it done gradually.

I wrote several posts back that your hair is long enough that if you got 4-5 inches chopped at a time, that would give you something very different but would also grow back in less than a year if you didn't like it.

Same with layers and shaping, too. Try some gradual layers around your face. If you like that, have them add more in the back. If you want to try a V-shape, I would suggest asking them to cut a "gradual U" shape in the back first because again, it will grow out quickly if you don't like it.

Hair is such a personal expression. Left naturally, my hair is straight like yours but is probably finer and has less body. I can't get it layered when it's straight because it looks choppy and the ends stand out; but when it has curl, a blunt cut is too severe and I actually need the layers. I only know this though from years of experimenting and trying a lot of things (some of which, I didn't like at all!!!)

I hope you feel confident in trying something new, even if it's just a little bit at a time. :) You'll look great, and, we'll all be cheering you on. :)

I might adopt this hairstyle next...I mean think about it...

1) You don't see it around much
2) If you ever feel like a snack, look no further than your own head
3) Makes a great helmet
4) Inexpensive maintenance and has dual function (snack and helmet)
5) Next time someone calls you bananas, you won't have to take it personally

I know...it's a dilemma!

I'm not sure if someone's mentioned this already...but when I wanted to do something drastic with my hair, I looked at pictures online of women with my face shape, my age, similar hair type and color, then found a few pictures I could take to my hairdresser. I then asked which of those styles would be the easiest to style and maintain (which was important to me because I don't like a lot of fuss) and I walked out with a great haircut that was low maintenance AND could be left to grow out without having to get it touched up allllll the time. I was really happy with it :) But I did my research ;)

The key is to go to a good hairdresser! Letting a not so experienced hairdresser try and do something drastic with your hear is probably a recipe for disaster and has left some women rocking their crying selves to sleep at night until their hair grew out.
