John 1: [SUP]29 [/SUP]The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! [SUP]30 [/SUP]This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ [SUP]31 [/SUP]I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”

He spoke it as he saw jesus coming from what I see.

so a little confusing,, I did not know him, but the one who sent me said....
Wouldn't be confusing if John account is the day after Jesus was baptized.

Matt - John does not want to baptise Jesus, but relents. Dove descends and confirms His ministry
Mark - John baptises Jesus, Dove lands on Him as he comes out of the water
Luke - Jesus baptized, Dove descends on Him.
John - No record of John baptising Jesus, but of testifying to Him.

John's gospel is not interested in Jesus's baptism, but in John's testimony of Jesus.
Maybe the writer did not see the baptism, but did see the testimony by John of
who Jesus was and wanted to record this.
Nice summary. Looks like Matthew account is most detailed.

When did this become a thread about how to pronounce Jesus name?
About when I suggested not getting so hung up on specific details of selected verses you dig up.... like if the bird came down first or last..... at exactly what point John knew Jesus was the one...... I'm surprised you aren't being concerned over whether Jesus was baptized on John's right side, or his left.

Such silliness many people get into, yet something as important as understanding what was being said about 'repenting" gets, still to this moment when it is discussed elsewhere, totally changed into simply feeling sorry about sinning, and about quitting it so that you can be baptized.

Maybe it's just me that is confused by it, haha!
To recognize Him before He was baptized and say I should be baptized by YOU,
And then to say the next day, look the lamb of God. I didn't recognize Him but that's why I was baptizing, so He would be revealed to us...
They seem to contradict each other to me. But it appears it's only me, so...carry on! ;)

I am not sure, but then I have not read the whole thread either. It seems someone has a problem.

The second is a retelling of what happened before...like witnessing...

For example, your friend gets married. The next year he walks into church and you say..hey this is my friend who was married last year and retells what happened.

Okay oh wise one. Since no one else can say,it so wonderfully inteligent as you,why don't you tell us clearly what repentance is?

I have already stated that its more than you just described above, but obviously you choose to ignore anything said that doesn't fit into your preconceived notions.

So enlighten us oh Wise one, what specifically about repentance are our feeble minds lacking?

I guess...But God said, the one you see the Spirit descend on like a dove will be Him. But in the one retelling, John appears to have recognized Him BEFORE he even baptized Him. And then the next day says, I didn't recognize Him.

Never mind. I'm the only one who thinks it's odd, so I don't want to hang up the thread over it. :)

Here is the record of Mary and Elizabeth when Mary went to visit Elizabeth:

Luke 1:

39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

The babe leaped in Elizabeth's womb when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary. Then Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke.

John was still a babe in the womb. There is no record in Scripture which indicates John had any recollection of what occurred while he was still in the womb.

As far as John's statement "I knew him not". John and Jesus were cousins through Mary and Elizabeth (Luke 1:36). However, they were unacquainted with each other. They did not live near each other. John lived in the desert until the day he showed up in Israel (Luke 1:80). Jesus lived in Nazareth from the time He was a young child (Matt 2:20-23).

God revealed to John that Jesus was Messiah when John saw Him. John told the people he did not know Him to clarify that he and Jesus did not collaborate together due to their relationship as cousins.

There is another record in Matt 11 where John questioned (happens to the best of us). John sent a couple of his disciples to Jesus to ask for assurance. Jesus spoke wonderful words concerning John in Matt 11:10,11.

Just a thought to consider......

Do you think that maybe, since John is a prophet, He was speaking prophetically when he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world."
