Scripture support:

God’s Word teaches that the 10 commandments are the foundation of the Old Covenant (Ex 20:1-17), the New Covenant (Eze 36:26-27; Jer 31:31-34; Heb 8:10-12; Heb 10: 16:17) and the Judgement of God….

Act 17:31,
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Rom 2:6,
Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

2Co 5:10,

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

2Co 5:11,
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Heb 9:27,
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Heb 10:26,
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Heb 10:27,
But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

Jam 2:12,
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

Jam 2:13,
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

2Pe 2:9
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

2Pe 3:7
,
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Jud 1:14-15
,
Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him

Rev 14:7 Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Forgot this one and a few others but you get the point I guess..

1Pe 4:17,

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Ok Good night:rolleyes:

Heb 10:26,

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Heb 10:27,
But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries
Sorry, had a storm pass through last night (it's monsoon season here), so it knocked out my internet.

I responded to the first part of your post already, but to get to the rest...

Hebrews needs to be read in full, rather than pulling out random verses, otherwise you get the wrong context.

If we look at earlier verses too...

Hebrews 10:11-18: "And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Pretty clear here. The old sacrificial system was temporary atonement for sin, it didn't completely cleanse a person, and it still can't. Christ's ONE sacrifice has perfected FOREVER (not temporarily, like the old way) those who are being sanctified. What's more, it says that where there is a remission of sins, there is no longer an offering for sin. So proof right here that when one is forgiven THEY ARE FORGIVEN and their sins no longer remembered.

There is no other offering for sin, except Jesus. When we're forgiven, the slate is wiped clean. Our sins and lawless deeds are remembered no more. Great news!! The blood of Jesus is sufficient... not the blood of animals. When I read this scripture I see the modern day pharisees, like catholic priests giving out their eucharist in the mass, but history does repeat itself, there are many today that reject the sufficiency of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, since they believe that they must add to His work, when nothing can be added. Therefore they reject Him as being sufficient to save them.

So then let's get to those verses you posted further down the chapter, in light of some of the other verses, to get the correct context...

V26-31: "For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God"

Interesting example given, which also shows the connection between those two keywords, as in "rejection" and "trampled" being the same, but "how much worse is the trampling on Jesus!!!"

Do you see how your interpretation of verses 26-31 contradicts the earlier verses?

Clearly V26-31 agrees with the earlier verses, that there is no other sacrifice for sins, but Jesus! In context... for those rejecting Jesus, the only alternative for them is the old sacrificial system, which can never take away sins. This is what it means when it says "there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but fiery indignation" because they reject the true way and embrace the other way.

The adversaries... these are not believers. The only ones referred to as adversaries in the scriptures are those who belong to the world. If one isn't a child of God then they are a child of the devil. The scriptures say he is their father and his deeds they do. They belong to the world, hence adversaries (like satan, the adversary), enemies of Christ. These are not God's children, they don't belong to Him.

Judas is a great example of one who had knowledge of the truth, but he lacked the true faith. He was never a believer. Those who hear truth and reject it - there is no other offering for sin, only Jesus!! So then all they can expect from their rejection is eternal punishment, which will devour them as adversaries.

V39 even confirms: "But we (believers) are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul" - so this then confirms the separation between believers and non believers, since believers do not reject Jesus!! Just further confirmation that v26 is not speaking of believers at all, but rather those who hear the truth (have knowledge of it) and reject it, like Judas did, for example. They may even profess to be christians, but they are not saved. So then if they reject the one true way, which is Jesus, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, because there is no other way besides Him, and they reject Him. They've been told they need Jesus to forgive them of their sins, but instead they continue on as sinners, rejecting Him. The only alternative for them is eternal punishment!

The "drawing back to perdition" is not what believers do, as confirmed in v39. Just further confirmation that lines up with other scriptures that speak of those who come out from among us that were not of us, otherwise they would've stayed with us... and that believers endure, but those who fall away were not saved to begin with. But not speaking of backsliding, which is different.

Hi Katy-follower,

Sorry to hear about your internet problems. You may have missed this post there I show the context to show that those verses (v 26-27) mean exactly what they are saying and they refer to "Believers" that have received a knowledge of the the truth. I have no problem with verses 1-18 as they are in harmony with 19-31 that I have commented on here. If you feel they are not please let me know and we can discuss further if you like? If you can't you should believe God's Word as it is in context as we are talking about verses 26-27 and I have focused on 19-31.

HEB 10

[SUP]19 [/SUP]Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, [SUP]
20
[/SUP] By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
[SUP]21[/SUP] And having an high priest over the house of God;[SUP]
22
[/SUP]Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.[SUP]
23
[/SUP]Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised
[SUP]24 [/SUP]And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
[SUP]25[/SUP] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.[SUP]
26
[/SUP] For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,[SUP]
27
[/SUP] But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
[SUP]
28
[/SUP]He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
[SUP]29[/SUP] Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden underfoot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?[SUP]
30
[/SUP]For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongs unto me, I will recompense, says the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
[SUP]31 [/SUP]It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Context points:

* Being saved by the blood of Christ
* Let us hold fast our profession of faith not wavering
* Provoking one another unto love and to good works
* Assemble together exhorting one another because the day of God is approaching
* WARNING against wilful SIN after receiving a knowledge of the truth; there remains no more sacrifice
* Continuing in wilful SIN results in a fearful looking forward to the Judgement and fiery indignation that will devour those that practice SIN.
* You see what happened in the day of Moses and how people were put to death for not obeying his law
* How much more will the punishment be for those that have trodden underfoot the Son of GOd and hath counted the Blood of the Covenant (new Covenant = Blood of Jesus) and Unholy thing and done despite to the Spirit of God.
* God will Judge His people and it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God!So in summary SIN is the context. SIN is the transgression of God's Law (1John 3:4). If we come to Jesus and receive a knowledge of the Truth and willfully continue in SIN we are treading underfoot the Son of God and counting the Blood of the Covenant an UNHOLY thing (because SIN is the opposite of HOLY) and resisting or ignoring the Spirit of Grace. So what is the problem here in Heb 10:19:31? It is WILFUL SIN after you receive the truth of God's Word! Hope this helps you. Your better off however studying God's Word for yourself and asking Jesus to be your teacher.
If you are professing to be a Christian and are practicing wilful known SIN than the punishment applies to you. If you profess to know God while doing this then God's Word says you are not following God....

1Jo 2:4,
He that saith, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Jam 2:10,

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

1John 2:1
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Can anyone show me one bible verse that says that the seventh day is no longer God's Sabbath day? That says the seventh day Sabbath is ABOLISHED? God's 7th Day Sabbath is also the 4th Commandment in God's Law (Ex 20:8-11). If we break any of God's 10 commandments we are guilty of SIN. All will stand before God on the day of Judgement for the things we have all done in this life.

Isa 55:6-7,
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon
.

God bless

The "natural" man will look at the scriptures and see works. But God is not a God of confusion. The bible has no contradictions. Either it's grace or works, it can't be both.

God does have a sense of humor though. He destroys the wisdom of the world. Because the scriptures are spiritually discerned, he made it possible for a person to get tangled up in their own messy web of lies, if this is what they choose... because they reject truth.

Anyone can pick a random verse and make it mean what they choose. That's like Catholics picking out all the scriptures that say "fire" and then making a case for purgatory. For example, anyone reading that verse "if we sin willfully" could easily come to the wrong conclusion, that God sends His children to hell because of a sin.... but one has to read the rest of the chapter to get the correct context.

The scriptures flow together perfectly, with no contradictions. So when a person has the wrong interpretation the error becomes clear because it contradicts the foundational truths and promises of God. The problem is when said error is exposed, often the person will refuse to accept the error and instead will twist another scripture (that reveals the error). Then another scripture reveals the error of that one they twisted, and they then twist that one also, and on and on it goes, until the bible ends up looking like a fairytale, a complete mess. One twisting leads to another twisting. Scripture twisters do this multiple times to try and force the scriptures to flow together.

Where there is mention of eternal life, I just cannot embrace a wrong interpretation elsewhere that says we have conditional life. Where we're promised the HS will never leave us, I just can't accept an interpretation of another scripture that says He does. You have two conflicting messages. There is only one truth. Both are not correct. I believe that God keeps His promises.

Hi Kattyfollower,

Thanks for your post. I think you may have a misunderstanding. I do not believe in works for salvation at all even though I have been labelled that way. I believe the law is our schoolmaster that brings us to see Jesus that we might be justified by faith. Salvation is a gift of God and there is nothing that we can do to earn it. Please read my earlier post here linked as to what I believe then we can talk from there if you like?

All my posts and scriptures are in context and there is no contradictions with any of the scriptures that I have presented and believe. In fact I believe it should be a warning sign if you believe in something from God's Word that contradicts any other part of scripture. If you feel there is anything that I have posted that is not correct please let me know and we can discuss it after you have read what I believe above in the post above if you like? That will give you the basis of where I am coming from because I believe we must obey God's Word over the teachings and traditions of man. I only present to you the Word of God.

God bless

For anyone

Matthew 25:1-13

25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

hm..

what would compare these 5 virgins to?

Hi NNM

Your question is very important so I made a note of it not to forget.

Who were the 5 virgins??
Mathew 5:1-13

As you know, the N.T. speaks a lot about Jesus coming back like a thief in the night and how we must be ready for him.
Here are some verses:

Revelation 3:3 (Jesus speaking)
Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

1 Thessalonians 5:2-6
For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Revelation 16:15 (Jesus speaking)
“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

Luke 21:34-35 (Jesus speaking)
“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Luke 12:35-40 (Jesus speaking)
“Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Matthew 25:13
“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

Mark 13:32-35 (Jesus speaking)
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning—

2 Peter 3:10 — But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

If you notice, I've indicated when it's Jesus speaking.
Why?
Because there's this movement in our churches which was begun by Calvin. It states that once you are born again you cannot lose this salvation.

JESUS did not agree with this. If there is any doubt about anything, we must go to what Jesus said since HE IS THE NEW COVENANT, and I do believe He knew why He came to this earth.

He constantly told us that we must be ready for His return.
Ready in what way?

In John 14:26 Jesus says that He will send a helper, the Holy Spirit, who will TEACH US and bring to remembrance all that Jesus had said.

In Mathew 28:19 Jesus sends out the Apostles on the Great Commission. He told them to make disciples of all nations, batpize, and teach them to observe all that He COMMANDED.

JESUS said these things, not me --- as some on these threads might think.

So it's apparent that the five virgins were not lost since they left together to go MEET THE GROOM. They felt they were ready, and left together. But they did not take oil. When they realized what a mistake they had made, they went to get the oil, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. The groom came and took with him the ones who WERE READY.

So if we put all scripture together, we cannot escape the fact that Jesus wants us to be ready. He wants us to remember all that He taught and that the Holy Spirit reminds us of, and all that He commanded.

Some on these threads would have us believe that we believe on Jesus ONE TIME and we are saved forever.
This is not true.

After salvation we must endeavor to follow Jesus as a Master or Teacher or Lord, since we have decided to become His disciples, as He commanded the Apostles to make disciples of all nations. Mathew 28:19

So, I'd say that they were not unbelievers beause they DID LEAVE FOR THE ENCOUNTER. As those who become born again.
But then give no importance to the words of Jesus and teach easy believism, incorrect in the eyes of our Lord.

They were not reprobate since the did WANT TO GO to the groom.

Lukewarm? I don't know, since Jesus said the we only need the faith of a mustard seed, this means that ANY AMOUNT of faith will save you. What you don't have, Jesus will make up.

Mark 9:24
24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

So, the amount of faith is not important. What IS important is that we have faith in Jesus and LIVE FOR HIM.
Which means to be His discples, which means to BE and to DO as He instructed.

And where we lack, He will cover us.
But we are not to go around speaking as though all we have to do is believe one time and we will be secure forever.
JESUS NEVER gave us that Assurance. He DID DO SO for as LONG as we stay with Him, and staying with Him means following HIS rules, not the rules man has made up --- one of which is that salvation cannot be lost.

Lost sheep are those that wander off from the Shepherd.
They were WITH the shepherd.
And THEN they wandered off and became LOST.

Just stay with Jesus and be ready by doing your best and be happy!

JESUS WEPT!
I'm sorry Dcon.
How did you take what I said?
I said we DO KNOW scripture here.
You're just too lazy to post it!
I know when your words are from the bible...
You still should post the verse.
When you did, we had a nice conversation.

Could you read my post to NoNameMcGee, no. 153 just above,
and then tell me WHERE in scripture does Jesus assure us of this salvation we have.

I can't find it anywhere.
Paul talks a little about being sealed in the H.S. and I do believe this for AS LONG as we are IN Christ Jesus and are saved by Him.

But I can't find anwhere that says if we LEAVE Him we are still saved.

Just logically I don't see how you could believe this since it's our FAITH that saves us.
If we lose that FAITH, how are we still saved?

§Then we become like unbelievers again.

Jesus said we are separate from the world and will be persecuted because of it.
Mathew 5:11
Mathew 24:9

If we go back into the world, how are we still Jesus' disciples??

Jesus said to render unto Caeser what is Caeser's and to God what is God's.
Our spirit belongs to God.
If we LEAVE HIM, our spirit goes back into the world and no longer belongs to God.

Mathew 22:21
Romans 13:8-14
I was thinking about this concept of a seal on a letter.
A seal is the mark of authority, and if unbroken shows who is the person whose authority
this message is being sent.

But it is only valid as long as the seal is not broken. A seal does not guarantee the contents,
unless it is kept and left alone, else it could be tampered with and therefore is not unreliable.

So let us be very cautious to suggest a seal is something eternal, unless unbroken.

The idea of absolute security is certainly addictive, as you can see many religious fanatics throw
their lives away believing this, and throughout the ages there have always been people who do
this for many different creeds.

So rather than the seal guaranteeing something cannot be lost, rather it is a guarantee that if
the message is kept pure and whole, it has the authority of God. So it actually supports the idea
salvation or the promise can be lost, and is not without conditions.

They fail to acknowledge the simple fact that every one who has trusted JESUS by faith which SAVED them eternally has already done THE WORKS OF THE FATHER by believing on HIM whom he hath sent.......[/QUOTE)

True...all works that matter are of believing on Jesus.
Stone,

What is the work of the Father?
What are the works of believing in Jesus?

In John 5:14 Jesus tells a man He had just healed:
"...do not sin anymore, so that nothing WORSE may befall you."

What do you believe that WORSE condition might be?
I believe it's loss of faith as shown by continual sinning and not obeying Jesus.

In John 5:24 Jesus says:
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life..."
(and does not come into judgement but passes into life)

So WHAT IS Jesus' word? (word, of course, means what Jesus taught, all that He said)
What does it mean that we BELIEVE HIM who sent Jesus?

I believe His word is EVERYTHING JESUS TAUGHT in all the gospels and some in Revelation and Acts.
We believe in GOD FATHER, the creator, that He sent His only Son to show us how to please Him and be able to be in His presence for eternity.

If we do and behave as Jesus would want us to we are assured of salvation.
otherwise, how can we be if we behave as the world behaves??

I'm saying that works keep us saved because it shows that we are living in the Kingdom.
Works, because we want to be in the Kingdom.
NOT because we want to get in.

Getting in is free.
Ephesians 2:8

Staying in has a price. Jesus siad to consider carefully if we wanted to truly follow Him because there would be a price to pay.
Mathew 16:24-27
Mathew 16:27

Verse 27 says that the Son of Man will recompense every man according to his deeds.
Recompense.
Please see:
John 5:28-29 Jesus cleary means life and destruction --- NOT rewards, as some believe.

Don't be deceived by those that are trying to get you to go back to the law by trying to tell Christians that they are sinning and dis-obeying God if they don't observe the Sabbath day as outlined in the Old Testament. Everything in the Old Testament was a shadow of the real thing which is Christ Himself. Col. 2:16-17.

The law of Moses is the one that those in Christ have died to, are released from and are not under. This includes the 10 commandments and in the carnal observance of the Sabbath day.

Paul said that coveting was brought out in him by the hearing of the Law. The law did it's job and exposed his need for a Savior.

There is no such thing as "separating out the Law"...that is a man-made tradition so that they can say we live by the 10 commandments. We live by the life of Christ now who fulfilled the Law not by the keeping of external laws.

Romans 7:7-9 (NASB)
[SUP]7 [/SUP]
What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "YOU SHALL NOT COVET."

[SUP]8 [/SUP] But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.

Here is a great article that speaks about what is written on our hearts now that we are in Christ. I like to use this website as it has at the bottom a place where you can ask questions and sometimes I learn from that area a lot.

The Law Written on Our Hearts is not the Ten Commandments

This is the covenant I will make with them after that time,” says the Lord. “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” (Heb 10:16)

“This is obviously a reference to the law of Moses,” says the law-preacher. “The Ten Commandments were written in stone, now they’re written in the hearts and minds of God’s people.”

Not true. Here are seventeen reasons why God has not written the Ten Commandments on your heart:

1. The law inflames sin (Rom 5:20) and the strength of sin is the law (1 Cor 15:56). Why would God want to stir up sin in your life?

2. The law condemns (2 Cor 3:9), yet there is no condemnation to those in Christ.

3. The law ministers death (2 Cor 3:7), but God wants you to enjoy abundant life.

4. Law and grace don’t mix. You are under grace, not law (Rom 6:14).

5. Living by the law will alienate you from Christ (Gal 5:4).

6. Living by the law is cheating on Jesus (Rom 7:1-6). Why would God do anything to encourage spiritual adultery?

7. We’re to live by faith but the law is not of faith (Gal 3:12). The law encourages us to depend on ourselves instead of Jesus.

8. Those who live under the law are under a curse (Gal 3:10). Why would God curse those he has blessed?

9. The law binds and enslaves (Rom 7:6), but Jesus wants you free.

10. The law keeps you immature for it makes nothing perfect or complete (Heb 7:19).

11. We have died to the law so that we may serve in the new way of the Spirit and “not in the old way of the written code” (Rom 7:6).

12. When there has been a change of priesthood, the law must be changed also (Heb 7:12). For God to write the old law on our hearts would be like saying Aaron is greater than Jesus.

13. God found fault with the law-keeping covenant and made it obsolete (Heb 8:7,13). Why would God insult his Son’s sacrifice by giving you the very thing his sacrifice rendered obsolete?

14. The law is a shadow of the good things to come and not the reality (Heb 10:1). Why would God give you the shadow instead of “the good thing”?

15. The Jews considered the law to be ordained by angels (Heb 2:2). If so, says the author of Hebrews, then it is inferior to the gospel of Jesus (Heb 1:4). Why would God give you an inferior gift?

16. Some Christians think that God gives them the law as a guide to live by, but why would God want you to repeat the mistake of the Galatians (Gal 3:2)? Why would God do anything to make you fall from grace?

17. The old law-keeping covenant required an accounting or remembering of sin, but the new covenant is characterized by God forgiving and forgetting on account of Jesus (Heb 10:17). If the law that God writes in our hearts is the law of Moses, then Jesus died for nothing.

If God has written the Ten Commandments on your heart and mind, you should be able to list all ten with no trouble. Can you? What’s the seventh commandment? You can’t do it because it’s not there, and a very good thing that is too! If the law that God writes in our hearts is the law of Moses, you’re in big trouble.

The good news is that God has written in us a far better law. What is this new and better law?

We can't be left hanging here about what or rather Who is written on our hearts now that we are in Christ.

What is this new law that is written on our hearts seeing as we know it's not the ten commandments in the form given in the Law.

What is this New Covenant that Ezekiel is prophesying about that was to come and now is here manifested in Christ's finished work on the cross and resurrection
?

What is the Law Written on Our Hearts?

Six-hundred years before Jesus came, the prophet Jeremiah spoke of a new covenant that God would make with his people:

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.” (Jer 31:33-34)

What is the law that God writes on our hearts and minds? Here are three things it is not:

  • It is not the law of Moses. As we saw in the last post, if God wrote the Ten Commandments on our hearts then Jesus died for nothing.

  • It is not a new and improved version of the law. It is not the new commands of Jesus or the New Testament. We cannot please God by keeping a new law any more than we could please him by keeping an old one.

  • It is not the knowledge of right and wrong that was bestowed upon us – against the Lord’s wishes – by Adam.

So what is this law that the Lord writes on our hearts and minds and embeds in our very being?

It is Christ Himself. He is our life! For we have died and our life is hidden with Christ in God now. (Col. 3:3)

Let’s look at three things the New Testament says about the new law in our hearts.

1. The law of love

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34)

Under the old law covenant, love was demanded from you. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.”

But under the new covenant of grace, love is given to you – “As I have loved you” – and out of the overflow of Christ’s measureless love we are able to love others.

How does it happen?

God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Rom 5:5)

God abundantly pours his love into our hearts by giving us the Holy Spirit, a.k.a. the Spirit of Christ. Do you see the difference between the old and new?

  • Under the old, the law was a rule for weak men to obey. Under the new, the Law is the Spirit of Christ given to us, loving us, and loving others through us.

  • Under the old, you loved others because you feared punishment. But under the new, you love because a Lover lives in you and it is his nature to love.

  • Under the old, you had to make an effort to obey. But under the new you have to make an effort to disobey. It’s a whole new way of life.

2. The law of the Spirit of life

It’s important that you understand the difference between the old law (a written code you can’t keep) and the new Law (Christ himself, living in you). Try and live by the old laws, as Paul did, and it make you miserable:

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? (Rom 7:24)

Paul couldn’t keep the old law no matter how hard he tried. He needed a new law and that new law is a Who:

Who will rescue me…? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Rom 7:24-25a)

Do you see? The old law is a what; the new law is a Who. The old law ministers condemnation and death (2 Cor 3:7-9), but the new “law of the Spirit gives life” (Rom 8:2).

For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Cor 3:6)

Who gives life? Not a set of rules, but the Spirit of Christ within you. The new law is a Who.

3. The perfect law of liberty

James wrote of “the perfect law that gives freedom” (Jas 1:25), which can be contrasted with the law of Moses that binds (Rom 7:6).

What is the perfect law that gives freedom? Well, what is the implanted word that can save you (Jas 1:21)? It’s not the Ten Commandments or the Bible. It’s Jesus, the living Word who sets us free.

The perfect law of liberty describes what Jesus has done (perfectly fulfilled or completed the law) and the fruit he will bear in our lives (liberty) if we trust him.

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do. (Jas 1:25)

Look into the mirror of Moses’ law and you will be miserable, for it exposes all your faults. But look into the perfect law which is Jesus and you will be blessed, for it reveals His righteousness.

“Don’t just listen but do what it (the perfect law of liberty) says” (Jas 1:22). In other words, allow the Spirit of Christ to convince you that in him you are righteous and holy.

Don’t walk away from the perfect law and forget who you are in Christ. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Look intently with an unveiled face and be transformed into his likeness.

The Law written in our hearts is Jesus

Jeremiah said those who had the new law written on their hearts would know the Lord and would no longer need others to teach them. This is describing your union with Christ. One with the Lord you have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16). His Spirit dwells in you and teaches you all things (John 14:26).

The law of the Lord written into your members is your Father’s spiritual DNA. It is the seed of God birthed in you by the Holy Spirit. It’s Jesus Himself.

How do you know He’s there? Because you are a new creation with new hopes and desires. You no longer want to sin. Your desire is to love God and others and that desire has nothing to do with old rules written in stone.

Christian, you are who you are because Christ lives in you. He is the new law written, by God, in your heart and mind.
