I'm posting it here (misc and not bdf) cause I wanna hear from people with real experiences and I don't wanna turn this into a battlefield.

What causes people to 'sin'? And by sin, I mean, whatever you categorise as sin.

It could be:
  • The sin of unbelief in Jesus.
  • The sin of breaking any one of the commandments, or the levitical laws.
  • The sin against your consciousness (as in, doing something you know you'll regret later, aka mistake or fault or wrongs).

What do you think?

People sin because they want something and the act they partake in is told to be able to give them the desired end.. companionship, power, wealth, knowledge, insight, sense of control etc

To feel better (short- term satisfaction)
... applies to anything from over- eating to giving that "good" (cruel) remark back to a person that one cannot stand.

A wisdom in posting in the misc. section very well done:) What causes people to sin is human nature, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I am well known for having a fiery passion and love for God and showing love in abundance but I screw up soooooo much like soo so much and it isn't because of any kind other thing that makes me do it it's just that in my human nature my flesh wants something even though my heart says no and I sometimes listen to my flesh even just so i don't upset another person.

It seems to me that my desires of my heart and of my flesh are polar opposites but listening to my flesh is just easier, true there are many factors to consider about why we sin and what causes us to sin but in simple words human nature

The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;
it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.
* * *
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

The devil can tempt us but he cannot break the rules of free will therefore the whole the devil made me do it is bogus. Like when people say the alcohol made me do it that too is bogus even when we are not in our right minds blaming an outer source of our choices saying they ( made) us do it is just not taking the responsibility of our own actions

Very interesting, indeed. I often wondered about this 'human-nature' (some misconception I had caused me to backslide the last time).

I can easily relate to 'short term' relief or satisfaction. Sometimes we just want to take matters in our own hands and deal with it right then and there, sometimes, even knowing full well the consequences.

In the case of 'human-nature', I see it applies to both saved and unsaved. My conclusion, then, is that the Cross didn't save us from human-nature. This makes sense because Jesus didn't die to remove our free-will. But He died for our sin. I think this is a grey area, at least to most people my age that I know.

To me, personally, I understand that Jesus died to be judged on my behalf, all my sins counted as one. Being saved, I still sin, but I no longer am under the penalty of every sin I made and will make.

With that said, 'human-nature' isn't that much of a concern to me anymore.

However, I know some, if not most, people still have this question in the back of their minds, is there something we should do about our nature to sin? Would love to hear your thoughts!

One of the reasons why it is so easy to follow the sin nature in us is deception. At the time, we rationalize sin into "love" or "need", not realizing that both can be a form of idolatry. Even Jesus put greed into the category of idolatry.

We also have a tendency not to think about our actions, but just to react out of a habit to do so. For instance, anger is much easier than taking control of our thoughts. Because anger is a feeling, and to show instant mercy and gentleness requires careful thought until it, too, becomes a habit.

James 1:13-15 ESV:
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Temptation can be very powerful.

When it comes to alcohol...a drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts.
