BTW - I completely agree with you on the above points. It's good to see and speak with someone who seems to have a balanced perspective. Many on these boards tend to lean too far in opposite directions due to unpleasant feelings they have toward others further provoking one another rather than sticking to sound doctrine no matter what topic is being discussed.

I've never read Arminius yet I've been called an Arminian by some on these boards.
You don't have to read Calvin in order to follow his doctrines. As much as I can appreciate Charles Spurgeon, his sermons are heavily soiled with Calvinism. I can think of several other Reformed preachers of old that I have listened to who are the same.

We can not control the actions of others but we can shine such a bright light they will either turn from their sin or hide or seek to destroy the lamp/body that holds it.
When preaching the gospel in Truth and Spirit you will find many who refuse to acknowledge that they do not have the Truth but only hold to lies and illusions they found with itchy ears. Many will hold fast to those strongholds and throw arrows denying that they are warring against the Knowledge of God.
Make sure your shield of Faith is held high, and your helmet is firmly in place.

Good post Cobus. The key to it all is your last sentence. There is no way that we can accomplish anything on our own. It must come from God. The only thing we can do is position ourselves to receive from God. That's where consecration comes in.
We can not earn salvation. It is a free gift for those who take Christ at his word, repent of their sinfulness and turn away from a lifestyle of sin and selfishness. Will we make mistakes? Absolutely. However, God is faithful to forgive those who repent of those mistakes and continue to follow him at his word.
When we take God at his word and set ourselves to live accordingly, that is saving faith. It is at that moment when God recognizes our faith, receives us as sons and daughters, then clothes us in the righteousness of Christ (imputed righteousness) for believing in Jesus and not the law or our own works.
God does not expect us to work our way into heaven. All he asks is that we believe in the Son, abide in his word and walk in faith... real saving faith.

We can not earn salvation. It is a free gift for those who take Christ at his word, repent of their sinfulness and turn away from a lifestyle of sin and selfishness. Will we make mistakes? Absolutely. However, God is faithful to forgive those who repent of those mistakes and continue to follow him at his word.
When we take God at his word and set ourselves to live accordingly, that is saving faith. It is at that moment when God recognizes our faith, receives us as sons and daughters, then clothes us in the righteousness of Christ (imputed righteousness) for believing in Jesus and not the law or our own works.

sides we have alot of different denominations that hold to some reform theology but not all in the denomination are reformed.
