Okay, ladies and gentlemen. The debate that has been raging since the dawn of time will finally be resolved.

Which is the better franchise? Star Trek or Star Wars?

Why?

Go!

I used to watch the original Star Trek series with young William Shatner as Capt. Kirk every afternoon...but it still doesn't compare to Star Wars in my opinion. After Star Wars came out I spent many hours in class doodling X-wings, TIE fighters and Stormtrooper shootouts.

I definitely prefer Star Wars. Lately, however, I've had a growing interest in Star Trek and I've found it rather...how should I put it...?

But overall, comparing the two is "highly illogical," and I find the lack of faith in the Star Wars franchise "disturbing".

As far as franchises, I don't know.

I do like Star Trek better than Star Wars. I say this because there was always a deep underlying theme to Star Trek. Some lesson of life needed to be told and explained. They also coupled that with adventure and battle. Although, most of the battles were of the mind, not of the flesh. I think we even have the communicators now. They came out as the flip open type cell phones. We are now getting into the tricorders, I think? :)

I feel like you could have gotten just a few more references in there.

GrandOptimist:

But in all actuality, my Star Trek references are pretty limited...Even if Star Trek continues to stay in the shadow of the Star Wars franchise, it is popular enough so that history will never forget the name, Enterprise!

If I choose Star Wars, I'd have to give up:
All the captains...
Exclusive: Enterprise Captains & Legends Unite for Star Trek Summit - YouTube

Klingon...
Frasier Speaks Klingon - YouTube

Teleportation...
Beaming Relient K - YouTube

Great characters like...

...and much more....

Hmm...

If I choose Star Trek, I 'd lose...

Jedi:
Jedi Ninjas Ft. Team2X - YouTube

Montages:
Star Wars Call Me Maybe - YouTube

John Williams:
John Williams conducts STAR WARS (Main Theme) - YouTube

Yoda:

Darth Vader:
The Force: Volkswagen Commercial - YouTube

Obi Wan:

...and others characters and stuff...

Hmm....

I can't decided! Perhaps we can ask others' opinions??

Star Wars vs. Star Trek - Celebrity Picks - IGN Video

..or perhaps they should battle for it!

I found a few videos, but they weren't appropriate. I'll have to get Monty Oum on it!

Actually, theere are more Star Trek movies (not including TV shows) than there are Star Wars. Just FYI.
Yes, and they all pretty much stunk except for the last one that came out in 2009(?). That one kicked butt. Its the only one that I felt wasn't a 2 hour long tv episode.

Star Trek. I grew up with it.

Star Wars. I grew up with it, I remember waiting outside the Roxy theatre , for about two hours in line, all of age 1O 3/4, thrilled as could be to be seeing it and then...

...i thought it was ok. Not great.

I think back now to the daily episodes of Star Trek I used to watch age 10 to 13 and those memories are further etched in my mind for that time of age for me. But then...

...in 1981, the 2nd installment came out for Star Wars and my family tok me to see that and I just loved thst one, except the part where Vader cut off Luke's hand, that darth big meanie. Then came, think was 2 years later, The Return of the Jedi, now, that movie rocked ewoks. I LOVED that one, as, I stood in line with my mom's nursing friend for 2 hours on opening night, that was the best, LOVED the teddy bear people and forest battle scenes on the flyscooter thingamajigs.

So, you take my love of watching Star Trek three years straight against my love of watching Star Wars, and, there id, ultimately, just something about the old, cool blobs on the ceiling, and, strange life on other planets and Starship Enterprise complete thinking and, I think, reason I appreciated Star Wars 2 (empire) and Star Wars 3 (Jedi) was....

....my original appreciation of Star Trek.that deserves credit, fully, for piqueing my interest in Star Wars Trilogy and all other shows I watched, was it 'Space 1999?' Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 21st Century, etc.

Note: i never watched Voysger or deep space nine or any Star Trek movies, except save the whales one, whoich i liked, a lot. I gurss, by age 14 or 15 i didn't fare for that stuf., anymore.

Its interesting that most of the respondants have been men - so I thought I would even it up a little.

Got to be Star Trek - want to know why?

The food replicator of course - oh what bliss imagine coming in from work and saying mash, yorkshire pudding, roast beef with all the veg and trimmings.
Followed by strawberry cheese cake. Ka-ching and there it is right before your eyes and no washing up afterwards - now try to beat that star wars fans!!!

Star Trek, as my profile would indicate. I was watching Star Trek before I even knew what Star Wars is.

There were two things I liked about Star Trek, especially the original series and The Next Generation. First, it was the idea of the future it had. Humanity was exploring the universe in these amazing starships. A sort of peace and utopia had been established where things like racism, sexism, religious intolerance, and so on had been by and large removed. Captain Picard stands out as one of my favorite characters, someone who I would admire if I met him in real life. Level-headed, diplomatic, an unending devotion to duty. Generally straight-thinking and no matter what you threw at him, he could gracefully keep the peace and maintain fairness - even if it meant justified violence (such as self-defense) or doing something that many would vehemently disagree with.

Kirk was alright but he was more of a cowboy than a captain, seducing at least one alien woman almost every episode. Even in the 2009 remake, it was bleh. I don't remember enough about Sisko or Archer to have an opinion, and I vaguely know enough about Janeway to admire how she stuck to Starfleet's rules (usually).

And then of course you have Spock and Data. If I were to assume the role of a Star Trek character, it would be one of them. They're both different from everyone else in some way. Spock is a Vulcan, who spends his life fighting emotions. Data doesn't naturally have them but yearns to experience them - then has to spend time fighting their wildness. But by nature they're walking encyclopedia, thinkers, logicians. These are the kinds of ways I perceive myself.

The various storylines that Star Trek has gone over in the years are varied and many are pretty good. Especially TNG, they touched on many different things.

Secondly, the technology. I'm a bit of a nerd, and I love the technology. They've actually made books that are technical manuals for the starships, and I have two of those. I have something of an idea how warp drive and transporters work.

Then what do you have with Star Wars? It's alright, but not as deep. It's more of a hero's adventure from child to respected adult. I like the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" series on Cartoon Network because it expands the storyline in the movie, giving it more depth.

Wouldn't it be cool to see a merging of Stars Wars and Star Trek (especially The Next Generation, which is the only Star Trek I ever liked).

For example, Luke Skywalker can be a new ensign on the Enterprise that Wesley Crusher teaches how to engage Warp 9, and in return Luke teaches Wesley how to use the "Force"

Worf and Chewbacca discover they are long lost twin brothers.

C-3PO and Data can share musings with each other over what it would be like to be human.

Geordi La Forge and Darth Vader switch head gears (which is how Luke actually discovers Vader is his father).

Deanna Troi can borrow Princess Leia's "slave" outfit and be chained to Jabba the Hut (and then be rescued by a phaser-weilding William Riker).

Picard and Yoda can compare each others wisdom (as well as their bald heads).
