I thought about adding a "both" option, but I wanted to make people take sides.
Hmm... Sounds oddly reminiscent of the Saw movies... Hopefully he won't glue a lightsaber in one hand and some sort of Star Trekkie-ish weapon-type thing in the other and tell us to make our best choice... :D

I hate to rub salt into the wound (Star Wars has been winning the poll by a pretty wide margin), but I think this rather impressive german flash mob performance of the theme song is like the icing on the cake. ;)

I grew up on Star Wars but not Star Trek. Star Wars suited me better at a young age because I wanted something more fun than serious. I've seen very little of Star Trek but what I have seen strikes me as odd and not a good odd. The strange alien makeup, with multiple foreheads etc. does nothing for me. That said, I've seen several Star Trek episodes and enjoyed one called "Cause and Effect". Probably because it related, in part, to some LOST theories I was exploring at the time. My vote goes to Star Wars.

For all my fellow Canadian Trekkies out there, Canada's Netflix recently added all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I always dreamed of the day when I could just click my mouse and hear Picard outsmart the Ferengi, hear Worf talk about the honor and glory of the Klingon Empire, and to see the flirtatious back-and-forth goings on between Riker and Troi!!!

It feels good to be a Trekkie again!!!

I don't think th are comparable as genre.... Star Trek is pure science fiction... Star Wars is not science fiction, is more a "fantasy" set in the future

True. This is also the reason why Star Trek is better than Star Wars.

I do not, however, see this as a reason not to go about comparing them or even judging whether one is superior to the other. Star Wars still has sci-fi qualities and both had a massive cultural impact. Get a group of nerds together and questions of exact genre will not stop them from trampling the barrier underfoot and going straight for either arguing their merits or seeking to blend the two worlds.

And people have blended them together in many ways. See Mass Effect.

"If we see that Star Trek is winning we ought to vote for Star Wars and if Star Wars is winning we ought to vote for Star Trek, and in that way let us keep things as even as possible." ~ Harry Truman

I think my reasoning is more of a Philosophical one.

As much as I love watching star trek because, it reminds me that the Universe is indeed such a vast mystery, I also feel very disturbed by it. Okay, so there is no war and no disease to speak of but, the trade off is that society is so Vanilla that in a way it reminds me of North Korea. Instead of Kim Jong we have Science. Instead of Communism we have the Prime Directive. It is as if the Characters lack a soul, or as if the belief in God must be suspended not to toss one's cookies. And yet we are led to believe that we should somehow look forward to this time. Whole Societies are cheesy stereotypes. The Federation are a bunch of Socialist cult followers who tow the line of their Prime Directive until it suits them to break it. The show addresses problems as if instead of championing the cause of Good and Evil, it is merely something to be trifled with in the Political realm and if that doesn't work, war is the Answer.

Whereas Star Wars does not address the mysteries that make the Show Magical. Yes, the Galaxy feels entirely explored but, not personally explored. The true mystery of Star Wars is that the Mystery is within. A person must wrestle with Morality and Ethics and the personal burden of responsibility in doing what is right. And unlike Star Trek, right in Star Wars means the addressing Good and Evil, not just the overall welfare of society. There are so many different societies and cultures and ways of life, that a person's allegiance must first be to his or her own internal battle of Good and Evil. It also feels more realistic in the sense that there is poverty and pirates and scum bags to be found in everything. And even in the midst of scoundrels and in the depths of the street, there are still people who have made the choice to fight the good fight.
