What perplexed me is why he was left alone at the top of the ridge all night to work alone. Someone could have gone up to help him and possibly save many more. It struck me as odd that nobody made any attempt to help beyond collecting the survivors he delivered to them.
Yes, I saw that too. I was thinking they felt after he'd saved one he would have been killed himself before they went up to get him. Finally, that one general said ..no her up there alive ! But even then they just waited at the bottom of the ropes and , ready to shoot from the bottom but never climbing up to get him. That part baffeled me too. Maybe if I read the book it will describe why.

Apparently he saved seventy five men by himself, if I am remembering correctly, all the while dodging enemy forays into the killing field to make sure everyone was dead. Had someone been sent up to help him, all the time he spent lowering the survivors down from the top of the ridge could have been spent collecting another one, and another one. Yeah, it was perplexing why they left him up there all alone to do it all by himself all night long. But then again, that is also part of why he is considered a hero :) Perplexing still...

Once you make a post, beneath it on the right hand side is the option to edit. You get five minutes edit time total from the time of the original post. If there are too many corrections to make, you can go in to edit and then copy the post and delete it to start over. You have also been cutting off part of the quote tags, which is also fixable in edits :)

After seeing Hacksaw Ridge twice now, I understand MORE why they didn't go back up there to help Moss. They had like only 50 men (if that) and like 10000 had japanese had come up from that underground tunnel forcing everyone to retreat and climb back down the ropes. They aren't going up there till they had more men and intelligence of where all these Japanese were coming from. It would have been suicide to go back up there right then to rescue Moss. They were so outnumbered. It really was a miracle how God worked through and protected him . Did you see he was even lowering injured Japanese down those ropes ?

An interesting note about Hacksaw Ridge... Over the course of 20 years, a number of filmmakers had approached Doss and asked his permission to make a film about what happened and he declined each time and said he didn't consider himself a hero. He also did not want to bring any attention to himself.

When Mel Gibson asked for his permission he said he would let his church decide. Well... we can thank his church. :) What a humble hero!
Here is a link to the Desmond Doss documentary, it is really well done. And like you said, Doss really was very humble. [video=youtube;0BocIi8_M0I]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BocIi8_M0I[/video]

Thanks for posting. I am ashamed i didnt know abt Sgt York, said to be the greatest WW1 hero, and i didnt know=(. This the kind of movie my father would have let us watch... idk, maybe he did let us or older sibs, but i do not remember, so i took the trouble to see parts and havent finished yet, but i'm watching.

Ps. I remember my father and sibs too watching some old war movies, but i was quite young and didnt appreciate them much at the time, but later i did see some and much prefer them and the lessons taught than many newer action films=).
I like older war movies. All Quiet on the Western Front is my favorite. It really is an anti-war movie. That's alright about not knowing about Sgt. York, I am sure there are many Americans who do not know about him. :)

Then you will love "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" Cooper and his wife are Quakers, but she finds his worldliness intolerable at times.

I watched it about 10 times.
I have seen it years ago, and have read some of Jessamyn West's short stories about growing up as a Quaker. I always remember the pet goose for some reason. I believe Dorothy MacGuire is also in that film and she is lovely, as always. I think Tony Perkins was in it prePsycho days as the eldest son. Thanks for mentioning it here for those who have not heard of it.
