Well, OK. I got into a car accident a while ago. Someone hit me from behind and I hit the person in front of me. I was looking at my phone every now and then but I felt like I was in control of my driving. When the person in front of me slammed on his brakes I slammed on mine and I remember thinking ok I'm stopping a little harder then usual and then bam I was hit from behind. Never in my mind did I think I was going to get hit from behind or that there was gonna be an accident at all. I didn't tell anyone I was on my phone but now after the fact I feel like I should. I feel like that's what God wants me to do. What do you all think? I feel like until I tell them I won't be able to let it go. I'm not sure why. The person behind me was found at fault. I guess I feel like I was negligant too even though I don't believe I caused the accident and I should have to take some responsibility. Any thoughts?

If that's what your conscience tells you, then there's a reason and you need to follow it.

If the insurance company/companies handling this knows what they're doing they'll check phone records for all of the vehicles

It doesn't matter you came to a stop before hitting the person in front of you, the person behind didn't do the same its called travel distance. ok sure you looked at your phone you could have very well been looking at the radio in your car or some pretty sky or tree with flowers, the point is you stopped in time that's what counts your not responsible for the people behind you to do the same. Most traffic laws do make sense how they are written that's why the person behind you got the ticket... even if the insurance company looked up your phone record and try to argue you were at fault your insurance company is going to argue the person behind you wasn't paying attention either, there is a safe proper travel distance between cars that is set when learning to drive..I think it's something like the 3 second rule something like that..

[h=1]Distracted Driving Laws[/h]June 2016
This chart outlines state distracted driving laws. Some localities have additional regulations. Enforcement type is shown in parenthesis.

  • Hand-held Cell Phone Use: 14 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. All are primary enforcement laws—an officer may cite a driver for using a hand-held cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place.
  • [h=3]Learn More About Distracted Driving[/h]Issue Brief
    Distracted Driving Publications
    State Media Campaigns
    Tips to Avoid Distractions

All Cell Phone Use: No state bans all cell phone use for all drivers, but 38 states and D.C. ban all cell phone use by novice drivers, and 20 states and D.C. prohibit it for school bus drivers.
  • Text Messaging: Washington was the first state to pass a texting ban in 2007. Currently, 46 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. All but 5 have primary enforcement. Of the 4 states without an all driver texting ban:
    • 2 prohibit text messaging by novice drivers.
    • 1 restricts school bus drivers from texting.
Crash Data Collection: Nearly all states include at least one category for distraction on police crash report forms, although the specific data collected varies. The Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria(MMUCC) guideline provides best practices on distraction data collection.
Preemption Laws: Some states have preemption laws that prohibit local jurisdictions from enacting their own distracted driving bans. States with such laws include – but may not be limited to – Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Oregon and South Carolina.
NOTE: GHSA does not compile any additional data on distracted driving laws other than what is presented here. For more information, consult the appropriate State Highway Safety Office.

I will add this if anyone ask where you texting or glanced at your phone then you tell it like is. were you texting or just looked at it?[/QUOTE

I was looking at Facebook. Like I was on someone's page and just scrolling but I wasn't starring at my phone I would just look down and then look up. Like real quick.

My conscience does this about a lot of things. Like my sister bought me a jacket and I feel like I shouldn't have taken it. I have my reasons why but everyone else thinks I'm crazy.

In the old days it would be the same as reading a news paper while driving it's not safe to be doing things like that so lesson learned you can see what happens but still I go back to the person behind you needs to pay attention too. so case being both at fault... what happens in court just be up front..

I don't really see any point in trying to take blame that isn't yours. What are they going to say? Glancing at FB didn't cause the driver behind you to hit you. It's not going to change anything. I would just let it go.

Well what do you think your sister would feel sad or happy about that,, she got the jacket because she wanted to from her heart...

I know she wouldn't be happy but I care more about what God thinks. He is the one who speaks through our conscience to let us know when things aren't right. I can't just let it go because it will be bothering me for the rest of my life lol. That's how it is with me, if I don't listen to the nagging voice then I won't feel peaceful.

let me ask you this would God want your sister to not be happy No of coarse not, and God works through people for a reason..
i would be thankful and really feel it that's love right there excepting it and giving it.. you excepting the gift makes your sister happy thus you too. just excepting a gift from someone and them being happy is as giving the love back though may not be a jacket in return but you are allowing someone to help you that's a good thing..

In life many people the materials things are nothing sure they buy things for us because they think we may need it and sometimes we do.. But it's the joy behind it of seeing another person in joy is what is truly happiness for them.
so I'd say except things like that if your sister sees how wonderful it means to you.. Your sister will be one happy person indeed.

this is sort like the cross Jesus didn't care about what he went through he cared about saving people making sure we are covered with a jacket that's what it meant to him.

The person behind you was found at fault and gets to spend the rest of his/her life trying to unring that bell, all the while you just admitted you were at fault? Not only should you tell, you should stay off your phone while driving, considering you just admitted you were distracted on it and slammed the brake too hard.

I'm the person who spends way too much of my life responding to people who have no idea what they're doing while on a cellphone. I have been almost run over by people walking, riding their bikes, and in their cars on cellphones. Worse yet, I was almost run over by someone driving using a cellphone and I was on the sidewalk! He still as no idea he almost did that! (I was standing on the corner waiting for the green light, and he decides to turn down that street by running over the corner. We have handicap ramps, so he didn't feel it. I felt it!) That's how bad people are on cellphones. I gotta tell you -- to put me in the responsible position of watching out for you and me is a dangerous place to be. I'm no more responsible for where I'm going than you are, and I don't use a cellphone. I'm just Ditz-Walking.

So, your actions affected two other lives. YES! Own up to it!

My conscience does this about a lot of things. Like my sister bought me a jacket and I feel like I shouldn't have taken it. I have my reasons why but everyone else thinks I'm crazy.
No, that's not the same. In the accident you WERE guilty. You just felt guilty the second time.

In the old days it would be the same as reading a news paper while driving it's not safe to be doing things like that so lesson learned you can see what happens but still I go back to the person behind you needs to pay attention too. so case being both at fault... what happens in court just be up front..
The other day I was in rush hour traffic. Stopped in front of me was a car/SUV (somewhere between the two) big enough that I couldn't see what was in front of him. But we're in the same lane planning on making the same right turn up ahead, with a light 2-3 car lengths before us. (I couldn't see the light either, but I know the geography.) Our lane was still, but the two lanes to our left started moving, so the light turned green. The guy in front of me starts moving like people do when they're not first in cue at a just-changed-green-light, so I switched from brake to pedal. 2-3 cars from traffic light! I was expecting we'd make the light. He slams on his brakes, so I did too. I'm still surprised I didn't hit his bumper. We didn't make the light. BUT there are reasons people can be that close behind someone without being at fault, like say... STOPPED FOR a traffic light! We had moved up one car length when I expected at least to be the person staring at the redlight this time.

What is the "safe distance" for stopping behind someone stopped for a red light?

Want to know why the other two lanes were moving fast? Because they were pulling into our lane by butting in between other cars waiting for the next traffic light. This is their usual rush hour traffic jam, so I watched them do this over and over again once the guy in front of me moved out of that lane. All in the space of one block plus three car lengths from the red light.

(And this is why I usually try to avoid city rush hour traffic. Especially in Philly where everyone thinks they are special and the only person on the road. lol)

I don't really see any point in trying to take blame that isn't yours. What are they going to say? Glancing at FB didn't cause the driver behind you to hit you. It's not going to change anything. I would just let it go.
No, but it does cause you to make poor decisions like "braking a little too hard" which then causes the person behind you to run into you. The very reason people shouldn't be going online while driving!

An interesting stat for this occasion:
80% of drivers who use cell phones while driving think they are good drivers.
80% of drivers who use cell phones while driving make mistakes they never notice.

Do you really think the 20% who really can drive while on the phone are all squished into that 80% who just think they can do it?

Would you accept a surgeon to operate on you if he said, "80% of the time I'm good at this operation"? People's lives are at stake when people drive while on the cellphone. How about we remember this and not dismiss "Well, you were only glancing at FB."

I might be the poor schmoe with that as an epitaph on my tombstone -- "The driver was just glancing at FB!"

It's FB, for Pete's Sake! What is so dire on FB worth taking your mind off the road while driving a 2000+ pound hunk of metal with wheels down the street? An LOL kitty?

Lots of people on here do this all the time, right?

You DO know that texting/ talking on your cell while driving is illegal in several states, right? Get off the stupid fake book and get off your stupid cell, especially while driving!! It ain't gonna kill you not to be able to check fake book every 2 seconds. But it MIGHT end up killing someone else. :/ It's people like you that kill innocent people because your on your phone or gawking off looking at something, and not paying attention to your driving. I've been hit 3 times by drivers like you, and all 3 times I was on the crosswalk while they were on their phone, gawking at something, and trying to beat traffic while pulling out in front of another car really fast.
