This afternoon i wandered into the Bible Study hoping to find some solid, scripture based discussion. But no, yet again some atheist troll had decided to stir things up with random, offensive comments.

Ofcourse, we should welcome all atheist here who have genuine questions about our faith in Jesus Christ. Sometimes them coming here is a sign that God's Spirit is working in them, and wouldn't it be great if we could help an atheist to be saved?

But this guy just made random comments to make other people in the room upset, and didn't even respond to answers people tried to give him. It seemed to me it was just one big attention seeking thrill for him. I'm not going to mention his name here, but i'm sure people know who he is. Besides atheist trolls coming into the rooms is a recurrent problem.

So what should we do about it?
- Try to be patient and try to answer all of his questions; i mean shouldn't we love our neighbour?
- Get angry and get into a heated discussion with him; i mean there's only so much a man can take.
- Just ignore him all together; though that's sometimes the hardest thing to do.
- Tell a mod; though they are not always there to assist.

It would be great if there was some system in place with which we could take care of the problem ourselves. If, for instance, 10 of the people in the room vote for a user to be removed, they could get a temporary ban.

that could backfire if the troll has enough friends to bann others... i vote for option 5, mass exodus into another room or ask the person wishing to discuss the topic to take it to a more private setting.

Block them. If you do not utilise the block function, it is reasonable to assume that you want to see the things they're typing.

There is no block function in the chat rooms. What there is ...
Ignore feature in Chat Room PM's. Works on one person. And is temporary. If you log off it turns off the ignore feature.
The other block feature only works on forums, walls, and CC mail.
At this time there are zero options for blocking people in the main chat window.

The ignore user option does not work in the chat. Many of us are trying to get the mods to remedy this. There are individuals who would be on ignore if i had the option to do so

I stand corrected.

I've never attempted to use it myself. I'm scared of missing something.

I have been voted against in Christian chat Bible study for sharing the word and openly disagreeing in a non-personal, non-confrontational way (not even a decent rebuke) and thus offending a person (and friends) there, for which I have a 5 point infraction. I encouraged the participants (voters?) in the room to discuss the issues in the forums for all to see and discuss, to no avail. They don't even 'text' in the rooms but stick to voice-chat to leave no trail of falseness. The moderator went by the popular vote method, tho no one would state their claim in a forum or discuss these same issues in the forums.

I would encourage you to press on with patience and answering questions, inviting them to the forums to discuss the issues in text, with all, for all to see. Often such people can be used as a good 'straight-man' to address issues in the forum that might not otherwise have been discussed. The system works both ways - perhaps a gang of atheists or apostates would simply vote YOU out of the rooms.

If you attempt to engage someone in a respectful conversation about a topic and they don't engage in the conversation, but merely continue to spew junk, the best thing to do is just stop talking to them. Period.

The same people who would vote to have them bumped, could click "ignore" and go on about another conversation. If the person is on mic, just stop acknowledging and talk about something else. Sooner or later they will tire of talking with themselves and go away. Unfortunately, there will always be one or two people who actually enjoy controversy and they'll continue to feed the troll. Sometimes they can be more annoying than the actual troll.

The good news is that God has promised that His Word won't return void, so if we share the Truth with loving motivation, we haven't wasted our time, even though we might not see the fruit. Just because you don't see fruit it doesn't mean it won't come. :)

I do agree that when they are here just trying to argue we shouldn't join in; having questions is different from arguing. It seems to help a lot to ask him or her (usually him :)) "Would you like us to pray that God reveals Himself to you, so you know for yourself, instead of taking our word for it?" The trolls/ annoyers will generally just keep saying that they don't see how we can believe in God. If they keep on with their rude comments, PLEASE tell a moderator, even if they are in the same room; they are often muted. In fact, sometimes they're only there so that someone can report things to them (like, they may be doing work on the computer in another tab, and they only click on the chat room tab if they hear the bling of a private message). It's best to copy the whole screen (right click on "select all", then right click again, and click "copy", so you can send the message to the moderator in the forum mail if he/she needs it. If you have any questions about all these feel free to ask (I'm happy to answer questions if you send me a question in the mail, or you can ask in this thread).

Colt, I disagree that atheists are the worst type of people we can help, partly sometimes it's easier for people to accept Jesus for Who He REALLY is when they don't have ties to other groups. The other reason is because out of all the stories of people who have been helped by coming here, one of my very favorite ones was that of a teenage atheist who gave his life to Jesus after only having been here for a day or two :). He said later that he thought at first that he might be judged, but he was drawn to our love for him and for each other. He said he felt excited every time one of us said anything about God. It was as though God said to him, "Okay, Scott. It's your time now" :). Actually, apparently He did... anyway, almost everyone in the chat room was crying tears of joy when the young man prayed the sinner's prayer over the microphone. None of us even told him what to say, and seeing his peace over the next few days was wonderful also :).

Atheists are their own gods, as we who now belong to Him once were. Share Christ, but don't be a punching bag. :) You are a child of the King.
