Kind of throwback to the Old World, even though very typical of Mexico, etc.

Well yes there is a lot of spanish, Mexican and even Native architecture and design.

What's that amazing Montezuma 'palace' or whatever someplace in the Southwest? I think it's native American architecture, carved out of the rock.

we were conquer ourselves most of the time
I know what you mean, but historically Belgium did want to annex the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 1918/19, but did not succeed.

Belgium was more successful in annexing the Ostkantone, around Eupen and Malmédy after World War One, which had been part of Germany.

I cant say for sure but wasn't the Alamo used for military defense? Thats what castles were used for.

There was an historic siege at the Alamo.
