Two songs bring back hard memories. Both because it was in the first three months when I became born again.

This first one was because at the time I was just barely 16, had a just barely five-year-old brother, and we were both living with our aunt and uncle because Mom left Dad and moved back with her mom and us. But two weeks later we found out she had a kind of cancer that was going to kill her. That's when little brother and I moved in with her little brother. Didn't much know/care for Dad, so loved we were away from him, but very upset I was losing Mom. Add to that, I was Catholic and the godmother of little brother.

Being godmother meant it was up to me to raise him up right in the Catholic church if anything happened to Mom. So that was weighing a lot on my mind too. More so, since I became born again, thus having problems reconciling RCC with God. And more so, because not only was I not in love with Dad, we had moved out to IL only a year before Mom left him, so I had been uprooted twice in the two years I was going to high school. I always had friends by the end of the school year, but not the kind of friendships most people have in high school. The ones that started in first grade. At least, in Charlottesville,VA, (where we moved to when Mom moved out from Dad, and ha! I kept forgetting people have heard of Charlottesville now lol), I had lots of family around me. No one but Dad in IL.

Becoming born again, I met older believers. Some offered me a place to hide, if I didn't want to go back with Dad. I planned to take my 5-year-old brother with me, except for the obvious problem. If we're in hiding, that means no school, so what becomes of both of us?

All this while Mom got sicker and sicker.

And then this song became a big hit.

The other one has happier memories. When I became born again, I had to tell someone, so I told a friend. Ends up she had recently become born again too, and she knew about a Bible study happening before school, (public school too), so she took me. The guy leading the Bible study was old! Really old! 24! (Why would 24 year olds want to talk to teenagers? lol) His name was Jeff.

Jeff was a missionary for young people, covering both the high school and college. (I just heard UVA lost in the game in March Madness basketball -- and badly too, particularly since they were the top seed.) He had a coffeehouse off campus, called the Bridge. It was open every Wednesday night and one night on the weekend. (Too old to remember which night. I was just thrilled that my aunt and uncle let me go out on a week night when school would be the next day. First. Time. Ever! lol) There was the usual guitar and auto-harp coffeehouse vibe of the place, but the song were all Christian songs or songs that fit into the theme. Then a teaching, and then prayer. So keeping the theme of Christ and fitting into what was hip at the time, the name of the coffeehouse was The Bridge.

Jesus is this Bridge.

BTW, strange thing is remember the scene of that woman being killed by the idiot during the protests in Charlottesville? If you see the video, the beginning of the crowd is right about where that ministry was.

I grew up in the 60's and early 70's.... nearly ALL the songs bring back memories for me. Greatest era for music, ever.

I think LSD probably contributed to that....

There's a whole genre of music related to psychedelic "happenings"...

But there were also huge changes made in mainstream music as well... the British invasion (yes, I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan) the Stones...

Too many timeless, classic songs to be able to choose just one or two. I have memories from most of them.

How could you miss the 80's off your list? :)

I agree... the Beatles, and I've always loved the Bee Gees (still listen to them once in a while, when I'm in the mood for 70's). It's a shame, I think they all ended up hating each other, even up to their deaths...

This reminds me of someone I was involved with in my early 20's. He was a radio DJ (breakfast show), and would wake me up in the mornings on his show, and play this song for me often, as it was a favorite at the time. This is also the interval song used for the darts championships, which has always been a big deal in my family every Christmas.

So many memories with this one....
