With a test of this sort, you almost have to anticipate that they are going to ask about roots... I drew a mere suggestion of roots penetrating the ground line, so that counted as roots to me, not that I had a gnarly knot of them under the tree... and my tree also was rather central on the page, though really quite filling the entire space, but I chose bottom as my answer to the first question, because it was not off to the right or left, nor situated at the top of the page... for some reason, that seemed like an appropriate response given the options 
This reminds me of a self portrait we were to do in one of my design arts classes in college, where some people did this small very serious portrayal of themselves in the middle of the approximately 11x14 cardboard... mine was slightly abstracted and so close up to my face there was not room for all my hair. My teacher remarked that it had very strong design elements, and gave me a good mark for it. I still have that painting
