Do you have a favorite Bible book? I might have to go with Matthew, since I quote from it so often. It is the first of four books that document the teachings of Jesus Christ.

It's been a long time since I've read the whole Bible but at this stage I'd have to say Romans. It's so meaty.

Interesting that you should choose Paul, and then just one letter from all of his letters. I remember as a college kid, in the early 70s, reading one of John's letters and being entranced by it.

Let me guess, Matthew 4:17? :p

My favourite is the book of Psalms because it contains beautiful poetry and is filled with enriching words.

I read from Psalms every morning.

Matthew 4:17? Let me think ... Yes, I think I'm familiar with that verse.

I love epistle of James, it helps get me through the struggles of my life. It shows that the Christian lifestyle isn't for when it is continent but a 24/7 commitment. It just has a lot of personal value to me!

All of it melds together.
All of it is equally important.
No favorite books, only a favorite author.

The book of Proverbs spooks me a little. I wish I would have read it as a young fellow. I made a lot of mistakes that could have been avoided had I read that book (and taken it to heart) back then.

There was something in the book of James that I once valued greatly, but now I can't remember what it was. I guess that's what happens when you get old.

Really? I would've thought Romans was a common favourite amongst Christians. As for choosing one letter, you did ask what our favourite book was. If I were to choose one of the Gospels, it would have to be John.

I wasn't being critical of your choice of Romans as your favorite book. I really did think it was interesting that you should pick one particular book of Paul's. I sort of think of Paul's letters as a single body.

I picked Matthew because I quote from it so often. Actually, I like Mark, because it is said to be the first Gospel written.

Blasted Internet communication leading to misunderstanding. Sorry about that! We do refer to the Bible as being made up of 66 books, so I guess I classed Romans as one book. Paul's letters are great though. All of them.

I can't stand 1 Corinthians because it makes me focus on myself as opposed to the Spirit.

Romans is definitely my favourite book.

failed along with magicians (or priests) to duplicate
conjuring of gnats or lice.

4. Flies (gadflies)
a. Khepri: Egyptian god of resurrection, creation,
movement of the Sun, rebirth; beetle-headed

5. Cattle/livestock disease
a. Hathor: goddess of love and protection; possibly
absorbed Bat, the cow-headed goddess.
b. bull cult gods Apis, Buchis, and Mneuis
c. bulls sometimes considered embodiment of Ptah and Ra

6. Boils
a. Isis: goddess of medicine and peace
b. Im-Hotep: real person turned deity, patron of wisdom and medicine
c. Sekhmet: lion-headed deity of plagues, believed to
bring about or prevent epidemics or pestilence

7. Thunder/hail
a. Nut: Sky goddess
b. Shu: god of air; associated with calm or cooling
c. Tefnut: goddess of water/moisture; linked to sun and moon
d. Seth: associated primarily with chaos
but also thunder, the desert, and infertility.

8. Locusts
a. Senehem: possibly locust-headed, god of protection
from ravages of pests

9. Darkness
a. Ra or Amon-Ra: god of the sun
b. Horus: sky god; sun was his right eye, moon his left.

10. Death of the firstborn
a. Pharaoh himself
b. Min: god of reproduction
c. Ra: god who was believed to create all things
d. Anubis: god of the dead and embalming;
Ex 11:7 refers to no dogs barking,
possibly referring to jackal(or dog)-headed
Anubis having no power over Israelites during this plague.

Old Testament-wise:

As a child I loved Proverbs and still do, Psalms also. Numbers and Leviticus aren't among my favourites, although I do understand why they're in the Bible.

The first book of John is one that comes to mind. I don't think I have a favorite book though.
