I called the plumbing outfit today and asked for another plumber. Than I asked that the job be for free. He couldn't guarantee that. So I asked him if it could be free if all that happened was that the valve needed repacking, not it the valve cracked. (Aren't you impressed I said "repacking" and "cracked?" The advantage to being married to a steamfitter. If John was up to as strong as he used to be, and if he knew how to shut off THE shutoff valve, he could have fixed it himself. As it was, he could figure out what went wrong.) And because I sounded like I knew what I was talking about, the guy on the phone said that's pretty much what he was thinking when he said he couldn't guarantee it. (He also said the plumber who came out was new.)

So another plumber came out, already equipped for the problem and fixed it in five minutes. No charge.

I just checked. (I found out where the shutoff valve is. Yippee for me!) It's dry!

As far as Dad goes. I'm somewhere between having already accepted he's dying and relearning he's dying. I remember this from Mom. It really doesn't matter how prepared we are when a loved one is passing. It doesn't matter if it happens fast or slow. There is no way to brace for it, even when we feel like we have braced for it.

A bit tense waiting to hear from brother again, but I know what he'll say. And when this is over, I will be just as shocked as if he were killed unexpectedly in an accident. I know. But I'll never know.
