I agree with the OP.
Faith is not confidence. It isn't hard to have confidence in something you're absolutely sure of. To me faith is trusting the heart of God when I'm less than confident. It's having confidence in His love and ability when I'm not sure of His process.

You understand the essence of true faith, perfectly.

It's called faith because you are not certain, yet you trust and believe in the perfect will of God and His compassionate heart. Certainty belongs to God only. We are told to trust over and over since the old testament and we failed too many times.

Most of us would say that being certain of something is faith. But the risk of faith is NOT having a guarantee. You cannot claim to trust in something you know HAS to happen, no matter what. Faith does not grow in the house of certainty.

I know the immediate and instinctive reaction is to deny that statement. But.............. Why?

Not wanting to come off as stupid here ,but I can't completely wrap my head around what was said above. Here is how I see faith .

[FONT=.SF UI Text][FONT=.SFUIText]1.complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

2. A strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

The two above definitions are the closest to how I understand faith . For me there is never a risk . I guess that is where I don't follow or apprehend what you mean by saying the risk of faith is not having a guarantee. I know in my life God works things to His will . I don't concern my self with worrying about tomorrow God has it covered . It is true that I may be surprised by something or challenged but there is no risk or uncertainties when it comes to God . I accept what happens and know He is with me.
I am not saying your all wet brother, far from it .I am just having a disconnect on the risk part .
Blessings

I think you are misunderstanding because, perhaps, you think the word, "risk", is a negative thing.... sort of the way an insurance assessor might hear the word.

I mean doing something you are far from positive will have a guaranteed, no sweat, impossible not to succeed outcome.

Take, for instance, stepping out of a boat to walk on water. If Peter had already been used to and confident in just walking on water any old time he felt like it, such a thing would not be risky, and would take no faith.
