Well then I can sum this up for you!!! IT RUINED MY relationship. HE BECAME addictive as if the devil took over. He stopped going to church, turned his back on everything, became obsessed with this game, tournaments and spent every dime and then started taking my money to purchase the cards to build the ultimate decks. He became a totally different person and I finally after months of trying to make him see, had to let him go. It was very hard, because he was also my best friend. This was 2 years ago. HE STILL is obsessed and still wasting his time and money with the goal to be CHAMPION. So well that is a nice sum up!!! I would greatly advise you dump the game now. IN the beginning I was like, oh its a harmless game. I will tell you there are actual threads online from former players of the addiction and issues it cost them. It was reassuring to know I wasn't alone.
I have to ask--why did you let him take your money? It's not his money to take--if he earned his own and spent it, that's one thing--but I'm just curious how you allowed him to take yours.

Don't play that game, as it has trapped a lot of people from what I've read on the internet....not only is it satanic but people become obsessed with these magic type games like World of warcraft and magic the gathering not knowing that they are becoming addicted/possessed....I once had a classmate who was obsessed with WOW and stayed up till 3 am every night playing it, his grades in school suffered after that his moral character changed and now he's in jail....I am not saying playing a game makes one go to jail, but the changes it does to a person, to their character are very real and measurable....he wasn't the same guy after he became extremely addicted to that game....he wouldn't hang out anymore and became a video game recluse....made some poor choices, and now he's not doing so well in jail....

What are people's thoughts on this game? I've recently become interested in it, it's just plain fun. However, after watching a documentary, it seems some Christians have deemed it satanic. I don't really see it, as nobody I know directly engages in sorcery as a result of playing Magic, and to me it just seems like a fun hobby to pass the time. I would see more plausibility in the financial exploitation of its consumer base than in the moral compass of the game's story and artwork.
You know, if we would replace the word addicted with Idol, it may put things in better perspective. I have been "addicted" to many things in my life. Everything from Scrabble (yes the game) to porn. But whether it's a game, facebook, CC, a tv show, a drug, food, or even people, addiction is nothing more than Idolizing something over Christ.

You know it's become an idol when you get angry if someone points out how much time and resources you put into it. Also, does this activity Glorify God in any way? If not, it's probably an idol and best not to let it get a foothold to begin with.

Used to play a lot in my younger years, don't play but every now an then now a days.. I see nothing wrong with the game itself like anything else to much of it can be a bad thing but if you just playing now and then with some friends or some family like you would any other game than I see no problem.. When I play I use it as a way to spend time with my dad.

if you don't want to know about it, why post here?
that's like going to a concert and saying "I don't like this band" :p
Because she came for the next band. lol

(I once went to a concert that had The Starland Vocal Band, followed by The Allman Brothers, followed by Fleetwood Mac. I don't like Starland, but I wanted to be as close to the stage as possible.)

Honestly, I came because I had no idea what the title meant, and I'm nosy. I stayed because I like video games with magic in them. (Anything that's not a set course and doesn't require endlessly killing others.) So, I kept going to learn more. You were the first person to mention it's some kind of card game, (Jeni said "cards," but I thought she meant like baseball cards, so what do I know?), so by that time, I might as well keep reading, right? (NOSY! Really nosy here.) I don't like games that require lots of not-suits cards.

So I just came because... well, just because I wanted to find out about it. Life is like a box of chocolates... whoops, wrong moral. Life is like that. You can't learn without looking.

lol wasn't really looking for strategic advice on the actual game, more just looking thoughts on the moral compass.
Pffft, strategy helps play the game. Get it where you can, if you like the game. lol

(My moral compass for games is they're fun until I notice I'm not doing something that's productive for way too long -- sort of like reading this thread. When it is unproductive for too long, it's time to stop. I've got six minutes before I have to start dinner.)

In my opinion, I don't know why a Christian would play any game that had the word "magic" in it. We really need to avoid all those things. I just don't see any good coming from them when there are lots of other games that have absolutely nothing to do with magic.

Why invite evil into your household?
I've written a book about sentient stuffed animals. Never said it, but do you have any other logic behind the concept of walking-talking teddy bears other than "it's magic?" Just the same, I also like Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, and Corduroy. I know the difference between imagination and reality.

Magic is imagination. I don't consider magic as evil.

Have you ever tried stopping someone from doing something? Impossible, unless you can convince him into not wanting to do it.

"Let." Poor choice in words.

Dinner. Good choice in eating. lol

(Will pick this up, or not, another time.)

I'm a big fan of games like Magic, Hearthstone, WoW, and LoL. I do think, like all hobbies, you can unwittingly allow it to take up too much time or allow aspects of the community to affect you negatively. My advice, play your fun games but give yourself a designated amount of time for that hobby, ex. 30 min, 1 hour, 2 hours max.
