Personalness? Get a dog.
Lower maintenance and training? Get a cat.
Any messes? Blame Tourist :p

I have a long haired chihuahua. I know that they're pretty healthy and last a long time. I know you don't want a small dog but I had to tell you that chihuahuas are awesome! They bark at strangers but that's a good thing! You know when someone is intruding. Also, they love their owners.
Here is a picture of my baby! She will be 10 years old soon!

My mom has a toy poodle and she's really friendly and sweet. She has a great personality.
Cats are cool too, but they're not as interactive as dogs are. They tend to go their own way and sleep a lot.

So if you want company, get a dog.
If you want something to see and pet every once in a while get a cat. hehe.
I love my brother's cat but he is a little boring sometimes.

If it be that you are concerned with getting older I'd suggest a cat since they keep themselves pretty well and are easy to maintain. As for it being a boy cat, just make sure you make him into a eunuch whilest he is young or elsewise it may be messy (the male is the one that oft marks the territory to answer someone's previous question, but this behavior is usually only if you do not neuter them at a young age.)

Cats can actually be fairly personable. My cat that I have that is male is very friendly and is very personable. If you get them when they are very young and raise them right they will become very personable.

as far as dogs go I have to say the cuter the better which is usually the ones you see in womens purses lol and of course for cats when they lay on your chest and are sleeping and purring it doesn't get sweeter and more cute than that, I do have to warn though I have seen they very much like to paw boobs before the lay down on you

If you don't want a lot of work, I would suggest a cat. I've got 3 cat's, and it's easy to take care of 'em. However, if you want a friend, I would suggest a dog :) They are a bit harder to care for, but boy, your work pays of :) I've got 2 dogs myself, and they are absolute angels :) Well, I hope you find your pick, if not, take both :)

This would be perfect for you. It's the size of a horse so you can ride it and yet it can eat the intruders :)

I have a very soft spot for calico cats. I think they have a great attitude. Loyal, affectionate, never nasty (if treated well!). I have also only had female cats, and spayed them very young (my last one was spayed at 9 weeks!) and I think that makes them less crazy. I do not like Orange Tabbies -- they get lazy and fat and I've never met one that's nice -- stand-offish, extremely independent, just not friendly.

From a dog perspective, I've only ever had large dogs (a standard collie and now an English shepherd), so I'm thinking those would probably be too large for you. But I do like English Springer Spaniels (a medium-sized dog) and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (more of a lap dog). I also LOVE standard poodles -- but they, too, are very large (but they don't shed!).

Whatever you do, don't get a Jack Russell or a Beagle -- they're NUTS!!!

I promised myself a year without a pet the end of July it will be a year and I am thinking of getting a cat or dog but would like suggestions and some help.

If I get a cat it would be male only as females are too temperamental at least the ones I owned in the past were. If it is a dog I don't want a tiny one but small to medium male or female is o.k.

So suggestions please and feel free to post pictures and help the Blond & tourist out with finding and deciding on a pet. Many thanks.....Blond
Let me introduce you to my favorite dog, the love of my life, who turns 50 this year. (Not in dog years. In people years.) I bring him up because...

1. He loves me unconditionally.

2. He is always, always there if I need him.

3. He never gives me any lip service, is always willing to listen and agrees with every single thing I say, (he has assured me of this when I just asked him, although he is a bit upset with one decision, but he convinced me I was wrong, so I shouldn't be saying he is 50. He's only celebrating the 11th anniversary of his 39th birthday), and has followed me without hesitation, ever since he was first given to me when I was nine.

4. He is never sick, although he might need a stitch here and there, because some daring feat was a bit too much for him to do.

5. He never needs a doctor of any kind, although he was happy an old friend of mine was a doctor. Happier still that the doctor's wife was my matron-of-honor at my wedding. (He is still a bit bothered that he wasn't invited to the wedding. In hindsight, that was very much a mistake hubby and I made.)
6, He never needs walks, a romp outside, (although he does like visiting the garden), food (although he truly appreciated the tea parties when I was little, and sneaking him part of my sandwich when the grownups weren't looking), nor water. Matter of fact, he has aquaphobia, since the last time he was washed, he lost both eyes in the washing machine.

So, what's the perfect pet for those of us who don't want to spend our time taking care of one?

Here's my favorite dog, Axlerod.

What better pet to have than one that needs nothing from you but a nice hug once in a while?
