For the past 13 years I've smoked about 2-3 packs a day. Last Friday(Feb 26) I smoked my last cigarette. To be honest, I haven't really been irritable til yesterday. According to those around me I'm easier to get along with but its hard. Very hard. The cravings are horrible. I'm going to stick with it, but I'm really beginning to feel the struggle. Anyone have any tips? I'd really appreciate it.

When I quit I ate a lot of peppermints, and I don't care that much for peppermints. But I was really determined and God was working in me.

I was told to suck on hard candy. I will try the peppermints. MY biggest fear is gaining weight. I struggle with that anyway, but if I can fight off smoking then I am sure I can lose the extra weight if I gain. I am just tired of living an unhealthy lifestyle. I no longer do caffeine because that can increase a nicotine craving. I just wish I could stop craving chocolate. Thanks for the tip!

According to the friends and family I know it hits the hardest during this time and then again in a week. REMEMBER it been in your system a long time. So it will take time to not crave it. My mom chewed gum none stop and then I got her every time she thought of a cigarette to do jumping jacks for a minute and increased the time each time she wanted one. She quit, got healthy etc. Until the day my brother died. Now she smokes again!

Hey I made mom do jumping jacks where ever we were at. Nothing like a good embarrassment to set you on your path!

Honestly I feel the only way I was able to quit was chewing the nicotine gum. Honestly it's more expensive and you're suppose to use it for 6 months (I stopped using it after about 3 myself) but that was how I quit. I just used it every time I'd get to that point where I felt like choking someone and it would level me out. You already did the hard part and picked a day to quit and stopped already. It seems like you're truly ready and want to quit, that's the main thing and I can tell you from experience the gum helped, it helped me anyway. One last thing and I'm not going to sugar coat it, it was hard to quit, I mean HARD, but it was one of the best thinks I feel I've ever done, and it is SO worth it, so go for it and good luck sister.

And, to fulfill your chocolate craving, get those lollipops with the tootsie roll in the middle.

im chewing gum right now, and it has helped some. Unfortunately I am around smokers daily and they like to rub in my face that I'm quitting. I guess ill distance myself for them if they can't be respectful.

Somehow I think I was even more addicted to keeping my hands busy. I would find something to occupy your hands as well, maybe? I actually did pick up crocheting around the time I quit.

Congratulations, Elizabeth!! I'm very happy for you. \:)/

Go to the store and pick out a really special piggy bank. One that makes you smile each time you look at it. Then start putting into it all the money you would normally be spending on cigarettes. Watch how quickly it adds up! Perhaps you can take a trip in a few months with the money you save. :D

Sugar-free candy and not just peppermint. (Too much peppermint can lead to painful diarrhea.)

Chocolate? I added a recipe for raspberry brownies sometime last year (I think some time in the fall, but look at recipe names, not my name, since I left and then returned), onto the recipe forum on this site. Raspberries aren't required, it's a no sugar dessert, and give up chocolate?

Nevah!

No shame in not smoking. The diseases they get from smoking will laugh in their faces someday

Do you have steps inside? Do you have enough room anywhere in your house to lie down? (Sit up. Push up.) Then you don't have to go out to exercise.

I admit. I've tried and didn't make it. (Have to try again soon, since hubby tried, didn't make it, had a heart attack, and quit by default, so I don't want him returning to a smoker's house.) BUT one thing I did do when I tried and had a craving was housework. I didn't make it, but my kitchen was always clean. Housework IS exercising. It's also a good distraction, assuming you didn't smoke in elbow-deep sudsy water or with detergent all around you.
