Hi I wondered if you have ever been into a builiding or room (maybe work, home, other places etc) and been able to sense the atmosphere. Also I was wondering how we as Christians can change the atmosphere of a place or room.

---

At church we have an amazing room on the top floor which we call the prayer room. It is large enough to hold about 40 people, but is set out in such a way that it still feels intimate.

It has chairs, large floor cushions so you can sit on the floor, even lay down if you want to.
On the walls are lots of written prayers offered up by people, lots of different things going on in the city to prayer about. Lots of suggestions for prayer. Also low lighting effects, a CD player for playing worship music and an 8 foot wooden cross in one corner of the room draped in red silk. Various bibles, Pen/paper to write out your thoughts. Also a book where people can write out any answers to prayer or things they felt God was speaking to them.

That room has such an amazing atmosphere, one of calm, tranquility, peace the moment you walk into it. It is just such a great place. You tend to lose all sense of time in that room.

---

By comparison a couple of years ago we held a service in the Town Hall and the worship team arrived early in the morning to set up. When we arrived there was an atmosphere of strife or arguing in the place and we did not know why.

Then one of the Town Hall staff told us that the evening before, there had been a martial arts competiion held there. In fact we later realised that there were plasters (band aid) laying around the place. You could sense the fighting and the tension in the place.

It did not last long though once we started praising God and I feel that we helped the Town Hall a lot that morning by changing the atmosphere of the place.

Prayer overwrites vibes. Our group never went into a new place without praying over it. In your ministry, you should learn it as a matter of course.

I suppose you can sense the mood of the people in a room.

Most of us will probably agree that we feel differently when we go into different rooms. My question is, what's going on to make these rooms feel different?

People's emotions create variations in the electrical field, which alters the subatomic structure. I believe it is recorded in the variations of atomic position of the electrons around each nucleus, but I have no way to prove that. Then, the recording becomes like a video played back through the human mind. Some people are sensitive enough to identify the emotion on entering, most are affected by it subliminally in passing, prayer can change the field by causing the mind to overwrite the file with the peace/joy of the Holy Spirit.

There are two secondary factors, olfactory and sound resonance. Certain frequencies of sound are exaggerated in certain rooms. Some frequencies are not heard as sound, but do cause funny sensations in the brain. This can be solved by moving to a different part of the room, like when you move in an auditorium, you hear different combinations of the orchestra. Most of us are not aware of what we smell, unless the odor is strong. Smell triggers memories.

You can definately sense when there may have been an argument or upset in a room between people, even if you were not there to witness it. Whether this is due to non verbal body language/expressions of the people involved or if there is another reason I'm not certain.

Atmospheres in a completely empty room - I don't know what the reason for this is. Maybe there is something
in the electrical energy/field idea. The human body does seem to be affected by charged particles I suppose the heavyness of the air just before a thunder storm is the one most people identify with. What effect that may or may not have on the human brain and perception I have no idea.

Smell and sounds definately create atmospheres, as does a person's preconceived ideas of a place.

There is a fantasfic place in the UK in Wales called Conway Castle. It is a real castle which you can explore complete with tall towers with winding stone staircases which take you right to the top. Also a deep well, lots of rooms, walk ways and nooks and cranies to get lost in. It dates back to between 1283 and 1289. It is also near a river which gives it an imposing vantage point. In the rooms there are tall in-built stone arches which would have been where the fire places were set.

Talk about atmosphere, you really do feel as though you have stepped back in time and can almost sense the lives of the people who once lived there.
