Hi, I have never been one to say a blessing before eating a meal, other than on special occasions with family and friends, but in my deeper walk with the Lord, I feel more inclined to ask a blessing before eating. Because I've never done this, it feels a bit awkward and I really dont know what to say (when alone with my husband at home or out with some friends). Can you give me some ideas for a quick blessing of food when it's just me, or me and my husband at home? Thanks!

Then, say nothing. You can't get much "quicker" than that.

I'm quite serious. You asked for "a quick blessing of food." (as if some memorized statement uttered in a manner like that means anything to God) In all honesty, you may as well say nothing.
I was quite serious too. As I said, I haven't done this before, and I want to because I am thankful for the blessings God has given me (including food) and I want to say something special and not have it sound stupid. I think God knows my heart and does not feel that I am memorizing some statement that means nothing to him - and I think he also knows that if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all my friend. If you didn't have an answer to my question regarding the prayer, why answer me at all?

Didn't the Bible say in Luke 11:1-13 - One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread.

Here, one of the disciples asks Jesus how to pray and he answers them with a specific prayer , so are you saying that if they memorized that prayer and said it, that it's meaningless and worthless?? Wow.

Please post the first instance of them praying that prayer..... or any instance. In fact, Jesus speaks quite sternly against praying like that. Why... He, himself, never prayed that prayer.

when we love our Father, we are naturally thankful for all of our blessings - they stand-out
and are magnified daily...how can we not help but to speak from our hearts to His heart
in humble gratitude?

speaking to our Best Friend is the easiest thing in the world, once we become comfortable
and secure in His love for us...

my husband and i always hold hands pray our thankfulness, no matter where we are...

Yes, this is why we pray. We are not officially "blessing" some food or a meal.

I'm obviously not a scholar like yourself, and far from claim or try to be-- my point was that even the disciples "asked" Jesus "how" to pray. To teach them. (and in Luke, he did answer that with a prayer for them) I was merely making the point that by my asking, I didn't hope for someone like yourself to take that out of context and degrade me for it. To those who gave me answers, thank you! And for you, my friend, thank you for your opinion.

That's nice and so sweet. I do naturally thank God for my blessings - but have always done so in my mind, not speaking them out loud. Recently, because we have joined a church and with my husband only being saved now for about a year, we are being called upon to say a blessing or prayer at Bible studies or meals together -- this is "new" to me and being a shy person, a little uncomfortable, so I was just simply hoping to find a way to make it meaningful and get some nice ideas. I am so happy that this was a lot easier for you and that you are very comfortable and secure in doing so ... being new to me, it was not so easy. Thanks and God bless!

Are you trying to say Jesus taught against praying the Lord's prayer ???

If so where and when ???

Jesus said do not use vain reputations, which means do not keep praying in selfish or unneeded things.

The Lord's prayer is about doing His will and asking for forgiveness, thanking Him at the same time. This is not considered vain to pray this prayer.

An example of vain reputations is saying hail Mary's after confessing.

The sin is forgiven and there is no need to add extra things to it, besides of course not committing the sin any longer.

Cindy, if the prayer is from your heart. A simple thanks to the Lord will do. The exact words don't matter. I believe this is the sentiment brother Willie is trying to convey. Sorry Willie if I spoke out of turn.

NP, at all. That is exactly what I have been trying to impress. "Tell God of your thanks, don't just recite a scripted prayer at Him."

Please, please, please, don't back yourself into the horrid, churchy trap of thinking you are putting on a show because others will be expecting a "proper prayer", done in "the acceptable manner."

Will some of those people judge you on how well you delivered "a great prayer?" Of course they will. And more's the pity for them.

In our small group study of about 12 people, when we pray, it's asked that if you feel led to pray to go ahead and do so, and then one person finishes up when there has been several moments of silence. We have had evenings where everyone around the table prayed, one at a time, and times when only one person prayed. You should never feel obligated to pray.

Can I just say something and truly let you know that I say it "with love"? My pastor always tells me when I have questions that "no question is a stupid question when your learning about Jesus and Christianity" .... yet, when I ask questions here to learn, many times I am feeling quite ridiculed (which is why I tend to not ask questions) or often feel embarrassed as if I don't know what I am doing or left feeling that what I asked was stupid. When you answered my question about a prayer with "then say nothing, you can't get no quicker than that", that did hurt my feelings and it didn't help me. Christians are constantly being talked about as being hypocritical because we are supposed to be models of Jesus, and many don't see is portraying this at all. Times like this help me understand how they can feel that way at times. It all goes back to that saying of people not saying anything at all if it's not nice to say. From the beginning, why couldn't you have just said that I should just find it in my heart to say what comes naturally to me and that it will be fine - that it does not have to be recited. I just don't truly understand why you would take someone like myself asking a question from the heart and tell me to just not say nothing because it was not meaningful if it was recited. I truly considered leaving this website because I don't want to have any negativity in my life from something that I had truly hoped to learn from. I just think that it would be more meaningful if we could all speak kinder to others in all instances. I hope you understand that I am not criticizing you - I am not. Just wanted to share my feelings as well.
