Yet on the day of pentecost every person spoke in a different tounge after receiving the holy spirit...
They did, but they spoke in languages that the people who gathered around them understood
The few instances of tongues (or maybe "tongues" for all I know ) I've heard, were gibberish

well ive seen gibberish which ive interpreted just as much as other languages like spanish and stuff. Theyre all languages in when you ask the holy spirit for the interpretation you get it. Its written that whoever speaks in tounges should pray to receive the interpretation.. a lotta people kinda skip that and just go off like bees in a heve

Sister Tinabeans1206,There were some good responses sister, but here is the purpose to this gift.I will only speak for myself sis on this,as many could become offeneded,we see this is not hard to do here. LOL 2 points, 1.Jesus through our brother Paul said to pray without ceasing( 1 Thess 5:17-22!!!) There has been times in my walk sister, where I have become so troubled in my Spirit, that I could not find words of English that I understand to speak unto the Lord with! Some say it is babbling, however they have not chapter or verse to say this, but the Word does say this about this language!!( 1 Cor 14:1-2) verse 2 to me sister is a fact! I believe this! Hence
point 2!

Even in our prayer dear sister God provides a way of escape,so that we can pray! ( 1 Cor 10:13) For to me sister not praying is a sin!( 1 Sam 12:23) So this gift provides a way for me to never have any excuse in my life!! I am so very thankful for this gift of Holy Sprit.

I just tell everyone to read the book of Acts and pray about it,for everyone I have ever told to follow in this, yes everyone!!! They received this gift! For every good gift comes from above sister!!( James 1:17-18!!) I sure can confirm this as being from above! Those who seek will find sis!!!( Matt 7:7!!)

I think what Paul said has been misunderstood. I believe all the gifts are available to everyone, but not everyone will make use of every gift.
What would lead you to think that, when what Paul said was very plainly stated?

Do you simply WANT to believe it, so you think poor old Paul was simply misunderstood?

I don't get it.....

Yes, all the believers did, but they spoke in tongues unknown to THEM, but not unknown to "anyone"... they were true languages, and it was done as a sign to the unbelievers that something BIG is being unveiled... the beginning of the church of our Lord.

I have yet to hear anyone start babbling away in Amharic, or in Swahili... or even Spanish. Being able to speak in that tongue would be invaluable in this part of the world.

I believe Paul, when he said that not everyone "gets" all the gifts of the Spirit, and that tongues are WAY down the list of importance in the gifts that are given.

Paul said he wished we all would speak in tongues... I find it hard to believe he would wish that if it weren't possible. But I could be wrong. When he said not everyone would, does that mean not everyone can? Or, that not everyone would accept it? He wished we all would, so I assume we all can.

good points...I think there are other passages that at least imply that not everyone receives every gift of the Spirit, including tongues. I'll have to do more looking...

It's 1 Cor 12, 27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[SUP]d[/SUP] ? Do all interpret? 31Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.

Not every one will work every gift. But again does that mean we are incapable of working every gift? The Holy Spirit 'doles them out' (if I may) as needed. Will everyone need to work every gift?

Keep in mind that there is a difference between an office and a gift. A gift of prophecy does not necessarily make you a prophet.

In Azuza St. (Los Angeles) believers filled with the Holy Spirit would speak previously unknown national languages, and people from other nations would be converted immediately.
