That and follow all the rules, take them by faith and practice them, because when things go wrong with fireworks and explosives, they go REAL wrong- REAL fast.

The bow and arrow thing, I think we all have done that, rarely, thankfully, I have heard of a kid getting an arrow in the noggin.
The cannon story sounds like a very near miss.

Well. The propulsion method only lasts a couple of seconds at the most as it is a fine gas rather then a solid as in a firework...The source of ignition was switched off prior to us going near. It was more the height the bullet must have reached before it returned to the ground!
I wouldn't want to look down the thing if it were a firework as they smoulder for ages!

I was talking to a brother in church who told me this story.
His uncle had lost his eye aged 10 and had a glass eye.

The young man as a ten year old liked filling a bottle with a acetylene and then
cork it with a cloth and throw it into the air. It would normally explode, except
one day in exploded in his hand.

You can imagine how you try something once that is dangerous, get away with
it and think you are untouchable and so continue. Reminds me of mans attitude
to sin.

It can potentially go wrong. Brother saw the idea on a children's science TV programme. They just lit the gas with a match in front of the cannon! I made sure the spark would be from something that we could be right away from it when it went. I think we were about 25-30 feet away and partly behind something. Can't remember what we stood behind now. May have been my mums compost heap. Was strange that as someone stole her compost heap. All we saw were twin wheelbase tyre tracks going off the drive and into the area where it was. Was a year and a half's worth of compost.

I got involved on the build to bring in some safety, so I insisted it was fired from a safe distance via a remote control made from old toy radio controlled cars. The cannon was positioned straight up as we didnt want the bullet (Which was about the weight of an apple or orange) to stray too far. We also wanted to have our bullet back as we didnt want to keep making them!
We fired it from our safe distance. We heard the sound but didnt see the bullet leave the cannon. My brother was going to run to the cannon but I stopped him. I counted to ten slowly and then we walked over to it to see if the bullet was lodged in the cannon. We were there for about five seconds looking down the empty barrel and bang! The bullet came down right behind us less then two feet from us.
On each try the same happened. Took something like 15-20 seconds to return and despite the wind, it returned within the area of the cannon straying no further then at most 10 feet! We had a few close ones as we assumed it couldn't possibly take any longer then it did to return. It didnt have a parachute effect as it was made without this in mind.
I'm not going to give details on how it was made other then the radio controlled parts because a dare say one could do some damage if it didnt go to plan. I'm glad I got involved as though I tried to talk him out of it he was determined to try, so I was in between my mum who put pressure on me to ensure his safety and my brother who would do it anyway!
It was an experience. Not sure how high it went though except to say it went through the clouds, hence why we could not see it, apart from the speed it left the cannon.

I don't know UK laws. Maybe they were being a couple of inventive hoodlums.

Call me a hyper-conservative, but I do think it's important for kids to learn how to safely use and work with potentially dangerous objects. It's an important essence of adulthood in any healthy society.

That said, if I'm ever fortunate enough to have sons who want to build a rocket, I would make sure I'm supervising. Law suits being what they are.

We have strange laws in Britain. One can buy a tank but any machine guns need to be taken off and I assume destroyed. Yet one is perfectly legally allowed to use the cannon part of the gun. I assume the cannon is less destructive?

I've no idea. Also a few years back our tanks were converted to be more environmentally friendly. Jeremy Clarkson made the comment that it was OK to fire out plutonium missiles as long as the engines didnt pollute the environment!

It would not surprise me if soon our tanks will only be allowed to fire sponge darts with revolving thickly feathers!

I have a permit to carry concealed, but I don't use it. I got the permit so I didn't have to get a yearly permit to acquire and can buy whatever I want for the 5 year life of the concealed permit and then renew.

I do carry a weapon in my vehicle if I go on a long trip, but never any other time.

I have my Texas LTC, and I carry occasionally. I don't yet see a need to carry all the time.

I always have a gun with me when traveling, however.

Getting a concealed carry permit is pretty much impossible here unless you're a cop or a gun dealer.

i carry all the time, it's like a parachute, you may never need it, may only need it once if at all, but nothing
will work like it if you need it. Being put by the Almighty in a place where you can render aid and save a life has happened.

I carry everywhere, all the time with the obvious exceptions (court house etc).

That's why I suggest everybody get a single stack 9mm if they can. Those are so comfortable and downright weightless that you would be a fool not to carry it.
