Our church does a harvest fest were we have the kids come and play games like cross bow, mini golf, spin a wheel, bag toss, and stuff they win a ticket or two to get a prize at the shop, we also provide hayrides and facepainting. We don't encourage scary stuff and we also give the kids a bag of candy before they leave with a story of Jesus tract in them . It's pretty fun :) it's like a fall carnival

Ok, the article says 16-17th century which means 1500-1600s which makes sense under the heavy calvinistic puritan movement.
that date would imply that it wasn't the United States (1776, anyone?), but Europe (not having read the article)
