I just saw this thread for the first time. I feel compelled to reply to the Title...

The bell curve just works that way. Some people are mean, some are above mean, and some are below mean. ;)

Simple answer you may think but really think about it. Why do people chose to be mean, chose to hurt others, chose to cause pain to others when it isn't necessary? What causes someone's psyche to go in that direction. I know the answer someone may give is the apple and the forbidden tree, Adam and Eve, blah blah blah... I get that is where sin resulted from but what causes someone to chose evil over good. What satisfaction does someone have being mean to people?
I don’t believe people intentionally make it their rule to go out and be mean. I believe it’s more a protection mechanism

what is going on or has been doing on in their lives plays an important factor

Our responsibility is still to love, pray for them

we can only master (discipline) ourselves and that means not to return “evil for evil”

There are definitely those who choose to be mean : narcissist. It's their life's goal to ruin someone's day every day. There are also those who are just miserable. They chose to let in jealousy and hate and it bleeds into everything they do. Then there are those who are just cranky. Maybe they don't feel well. I had a boss like this. She had lupus and whenever she was on her meds, steroids, she was extremely rude. She would always apologize later but it was horrible. Needless to say, that job was short-lived. I just pray and ask God how to see that person and not take it personally. Sometimes meanness is a good indicator to stay away and like the person above me states pray for these people. Interesting topic even if it is old and to see others and their interpretations :).

Luke 18:9-11.

The question is really, why are we ourselves mean. And we all have been.

And that’s what I meant when I said it’s what is going on in their lives. This woman with lupus was aware that her condition triggered her mood

Yes I gave 3 examples. Definitely varies and only God knows for sure. Of course there's more but others had already gone over it. Best to avoid the narcissist and ask for God's assistance.

There are those whom hurt people daily and are so self involved they aren't even aware of the damage and hurt they cause.

1. Because they feel like it gives them power and control
2. To make themselves feel good about themself
3. Living conditions; their parents or family might be doing the same on them so they end up mirroring this in society
4. Mentally unstable
5. Peer pressure
6. Built in pressure and they end up just snapping
7. Trend
8. No self control
9. Low self-esteem
