British man with type 1 diabetes to receive tests after coming off insulin

[h=2]Related News[/h]

US doctors are conducting tests on a British man who no longer uses insulin to treat his type 1 diabetes.

Daniel Darkes, from Daventy in Northamptonshire, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes seven years ago. But his recent tests have baffled doctors as his pancreas has shown signs of working properly again.

Branded 'Miracle Dan' by his friends, the 30-year-old recently travelled to America so doctors could run tests to further understand what had happened to his body.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo newspaper, he said: "I had numerous tests, about four or five, to confirm the main reason why my pancreas had started producing insulin again.

"One of the tests involved me running on a treadmill. They starved me for a good six hours before, and I spent about 30 minutes running at a constant speed to see if my brain went into a kind of shock mode, or starvation mode, to see if it would send signals down to the organs, i.e. my pancreas, which it did."

The doctors also inserted a microchip into his back to measure his protein levels and shone a UV light on his pancreas to detect cells.

Doctors think the medical breakthrough might have been caused by a signal sent from his brain to his pancreas. He is also a long-distance runner, which could have contributed to his improved health.

Mr Darkes was as surprised as anyone, adding: "You can reverse type 2 diabetes through dieting and exercise, [but type 1 reversal] is not something that happens every day. So, if the pancreas is able to recharge itself in some way then that is a big step."

Mr Darkes says that doctors are now 80 per cent convinced he is cured of the condition, which has never before been reversed.

The findings from Mr Darkes' test results are set to be published next week and it is hoped they will help find future treatments for the autoimmune condition.

I know some here do not think a person with type 2 can come off insulin, but really, that is old news. I have helped many do that.

But coming off type 1. I never heard of it being done. I hope this is true. It is great news if it is. Maybe something to build on, and hopefully not just a freakish one-off.

Hi rosemary, I have a unique type of diabetes as it was drug induced from the radiation I received from cancer the doctors call it a 1.5 diabetes I cannot take pills and have to have two kinds of shots but it not that hard for me to manage if I stick to it. In my time of being diabetic I have noticed that my blood sugar can rise and spike or drop significantly with my emotions or how I am doing mentally. If I become stressed worried angry or even irritated I noticed my blood sugar will spike even if i am eating correctly, depression also will do this to me as well.

Sometimes it doesn't matter if we do everything right if we are emotionally or mentally unstable, not meaning being insane but if our thoughts are frantic or our emotions peak this can also greatly affect our blood sugar.

it would probably blow the minds of most people, but we know of so many who have
taken control of their temples and obviously been convicted to 'clean-up their acts' and
have been able to completely 'get-off' of diabetes-meds - they have begun to live
brand-new lives simply by changing their 'lust's for what was killing them...

Umm forgive me if i misunderstood you but are you implying that the diabetes I and others have is a result of our sins and if we stop sinning it will go away?

Surprise! I think Metformin is brilliant!

My older brother got diabetes before my younger brother and I did. Even before hubby did. And at the time he would tell us how we have to live to avoid diabetes. There is no avoiding it, if it runs in the family. Best we can do is delay it.

The only one in my family who used Metformin at that time was my hubby, and good for him, because it helped bring the numbers down. Meanwhile, my brother kept telling us the best way to live. (His numbers, according to him, would have been on the low side for insulin even for nondiabetics.)

A decade later, and hubby is off Metformin, but my brother is on it. (I don't need it yet.) The "eat healthy and all is right with the world" folks will tell you that's the magic pill. It's not really. And hubby is off it, because he did lose a lot of weight and is taking care of himself now, so it does help. But, ultimately, Metformin helps when eating healthy and exercising just doesn't help enough anymore. Diabetes is a progressive disease. Treat as it progresses.

So, good for you for asking your doctor. One piece of advice though -- don't tell doctor how much you need. The doctor will be able to figure that out by test results, and it's different for everybody.

RoseMaryx. I will pray for you. I very much hope things work out for you.

There is a lot of confusion out there about diet. I can certainly understand the frustration and pain some may experience.
I will not go into a long commentary about diet.

Suffice to say, most people do not understand what dietarily needs to be done to bring the body into biological healing. I can understand that too. I had very bad allergies and ulcerative colitis when I was younger. I thought I was eating well but it just got worse. I was just blessed by God to meet someone who was a Christian and had a deep insight into God's natural laws.

I am a geek about this and have been doing it for 25 years, went to school to study biology and physiology and nutrition, and I am still learning.

Some miss it by inches, but it's like jumping from one roof to another and missing by inches. Miss it by 3 inches or 3 feet, you missed it. The analogy is about allowing the body to phase into biological healing.

God bless you.

Hi Oldthennew...I have give up fast foods, smoking, drinking, been living a very clean life for the past 2 years with my eating, more so since i became aware that my body is Gods temple, that just really helped me to clean up some more, but unfortunately with type 2, lots of things can make our blood sugar spike, its not all down to the way of eating, i have given up all my lust to do with food ect yet my sugar is rising, even sitting in the sun can make blood sugar rise, being to cold can make them low, there is more to diabetes then lustful things, no matter how well i am looking after my body and have been without meds, i am really sad that now i have to take them because my healthy life style is not enough no more, some people can come off meds while others have to go on them...xox...

Thank you Josephdreams...I prayed to God about going on meds and still had peace when i picked them up today...I am truly sad i have to take them but at the same time God works His wonderful healing ways through lots of things, and i believe He will work His healing through me while i am going on the tabs...I understand what you are saying in your post, i feel like i keep missing the mark, 2 years i have tried so hard with what i eat, but my sugars are rising now, and to top it off i have high cholesterol, but no way do i want to touch them stains so this is something else i am working on to lower, but i thank God that all my limbs, organs are healthy, praise God and thank you...xox...

Hi Blain...I totally agree with your post...So many things can raise our blood sugar, sometimes i wonder is it worth getting up and going out and about lol, if i go walking and come back home and test,my sugars are higher then before i went out:confused: if i eat they go high, if i dont eat they raise, and i do suffer with mental health although seriously since walking with the Lord my mental health has come on leaps and bounds, what a wonderful God we serve, am nearly 56 so am no spring chicken, energy levels can be quiet low, but for now i will take the tabs from tomorrow morning and see how it goes, thank you for your post, i hope you are well now and over the cancer, may God bless you ...xox...

Hi Depleted, thank you for your encouraging post...I would love to get where your brother is and eventually come of meds although am starting them tomorrow lol, but i do eat healthy, have lost over 2 stone and on odd occasions i do have something of the menu, i have worked so hard these past 2 years with healthy eating, but now i feel back to square one without the extra weight and bloods not at a dangerous level, i started off on metformin when i was told i had type 2, came off them and tried alone, but that is not working no more, the doc has said to take one for a week, then 2 in second week, then 3 in third week, but i am just going to take one in the morning and evening and see how that goes...xox...

For me if I go walking my blood sugar drops especially in the heat of the day, honestly it sounds like with you there is something else to this. It may be because of the age difference and how our bodies deal with stuff differently but in all honesty it sounds like your not getting enough insulin intake.

Wouldn't that mean your prescription runs out before you can get your next prescription?

Doctors actually understand how pills work. Nothing wrong with his/her suggestion. Who knows? Maybe one is enough for now? Wouldn't it be nice to only need one for now?

The doctor gave me 3 months supply...I will take two a day, one in morning then evening...My last blood test came back in the green range so i was happy with that, its just where i test on my finger machine at home my numbers are higher then usual, they are normally between 8/9 but have been hitting the 12/14, it could be the weather or emotions, i have been up and down with a few things lately, oh well we shall see once the meds kick in, thats the thing with diabetes,we can do all the things we should do but what works for one dont work for another, its a constant battle, but i praise the Lord that my limbs are moving, my eyes do see, i can walk, its just a thorn in my side ...xox...

I think it varies, i dont know why.

I know of two people who were very overweight, with type 2.
They lost a whole load of weight now they don't have it any more.

I know of someone with type 2 who is slim. Watches what she eats
and her weight constantly. Is just about managing to control it with diet alone
but just a small slip up, i.e. eating too much starch or sugar, and it causes
problems.

I think age and genetics can be a factor at times.
