Hi,

I presume I am a strange bird here. Having to the best of my ability studied both science, depth psyhology, mankind and it's psyche, the Bible and other religions as well for about seventy years, I feel a companionship with the ancient Gnostics, by some authors considered to be the original Christians. If I had a need for being in an active Christian community it would have to be the Quakers.

Christ is a very relevant subject but on some particular details my views are quite different from the mainstream Christian view. I have to a certain degree studied the Gnostics, the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Qumran sect, and many different sources, and am aware of the rich literature on the subject, Like Albert Schweitzer, Herder, Elaine Pagels and many others.

When I have use references to John Allegreo, it has been disheartening to get responses with quite strong attacks on John Allegro himself instead of addressing the issues he covered in some of his books.

My main criticism against some orthodox Christians is the implied and expressed distrust as well as downright denial of the scientific worldview. They don't always strike me as having a reasonable understanding of science.

On the Internet I've encountered some "Christians" expressing a rather un-Christian personality toward their opponents, but I hope this place may be more balanced in style.

Hello and welcome to Christian Chat. It's a pleasure to have you join us here on the site. It's actually a pleasure to have you in the fact that you have such a wealth of knowledge that you can share with us. Some members here don't have open minds but most of us do. For example science and Christianity can coexist and certainly so. This is a great site so stick with us here and enjoy the forums and the online chat. I'm sure you will find many people who would be willing to discuss varying opinions with you. God bless you.

Welcome to CC loved your intro and must admit I don't know much of the Quaker view points and that I liked science but don't know much of that either. I have however, read a bit about Amish people and I do admire their simple life style and family values. Hope is a good thing to have and I do hope that we don't disappoint you. If we do please stick around anyway as some of us can be amusing. This Blond welcomes you to a new bird cage and I can be a little (o.k. a lot) strange myself.

i havent known quakers since the '70's. then i was a salvation army oficer on the bowery and the 15th st meeting house had rescue teams. when they cane to a man in a doorway they didnt ask if he was saved, they asked if he needed help. if he accepted help they accompanied him in the ambulance (so the drivers wouldnt throw him out at 14th st) visited him in the hospital and helped get him into a rehab center. ...... Hello, GullyFoyle (of "The Stars My Destination" fame, by chance?), I discern a hint of a charade. Quite an adversarial entrance, wouldn't ya say? Although I appreciate the frank admission that you have criticisms against Christians and that you seek "opponents" (rather than friends) regarding your stance on the "subject" of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, I cannot imagine why a man in his 80's would not have settled his mind by now regarding eternity and would choose rather to fiddle away his last few years debating the relevancy of God's plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. Unless of course, your real name isn't Gulliver Foyle and you aren't really 84 years old. ;)

By the way Gulliver, you presumed incorrectly. You're no strange bird. There is no end to the folks who join this site with the sole intention of debating the Truth of Jesus Christ. I pray the Lord Himself present you with the reality of life in Him. Welcome!
