I just want to reassure you about your father. We do not chose God, God chooses us.
Your father was called by God and served him for many years. When people are dying, they often become depressed and confused. That is their minds, not their spirits. I was a chaplain in long term care, and it does happen that people appear to turn away from God.
But in fact, they know Jesus! Because Jesus knows them, and that is what matters! It’s the same with dementia. People don’t remember their own names, but Jesus remembers them. I hope you will rest secure knowing your father is with Jesus.
