So God did NOT give you His strength to quit smoking, but yet He DID give you His strength to keep going for over a year while John was sick??? Interesting.. Do you honestly believe that God takes his strength away from us, until the next time we face another trial? You've had God's strength all along, now use it. You CAN quit smoking.
I have never believed God gives us all his strength. That would make us his strength -- rather a dangerous notion, if you consider it. (Human invincibility! A terrifying thought.) God gives us what we need when we need it.

And, if you recall just enough to keep going. (He needs us to remember where we're getting our strength or we're downright dangerous.) I fell apart several times in the last year. I needed to keep going. And God gave me what was needed.

Much to my surprise he didn't give me what I needed to quit. Paul had a thorn in the side. I've got a briar bush on mine. I still keep on keepin' on, because God gives me that strength.

I buried my Teddy (45 years old, lol ) with Tequila when I buried her.. It seemed fitting that my two angels go together up to Heaven. Teddy isn't raggedy and torn anymore, and Tequila has a new pain free body. :) I'm jealous because she is where I want to be: in a pain-free body and with Jesus.

Well, duhhh.. lol.. I didn't mean ALL his strength.. just enough to get us through.. :)

Lynn I got some neat tricks I was shown if your interested. I belong to a smoking clinic that is helping me to quit the habit.
Cold turkey is not the answer for some. In fact it could do more damage if you fail on your mental level.
The Lord Does give us strength to endure. But also scripture tells us to abstain from things, even in appearances of evil. To repent (turn the other way), to occupy our mind on his word. To pray, to praise, etc. I know you know this but these to are ways to overcome habits also. So the first thing we need to do is repent. How do we do this when dealing with a bad habit? Change your routine when you get up in the morning. Your mind will be occupied by trying to focus on your new routine rather than your craving. There are a lot more things if you want to p.m. me or I can share over post, if there are others that want to know.

Potters got you in prayer sis.....do ya feel it;)

both of us are still amazed that we 'quit' such an abominable 'habit' while still being
'total carnal'...certainly our circumstance were totally different at that time of our lives...

but, it happened, even though we were miles apart and on our own journeys..,
so, we do know that the ability is there for us to choose...

our priorities definitely shape and define our futures, the question is, who do we listen to,
who do we obey, who do we believe in?, Who do we desire to follow and serve?

the one who what's us to die in sin, or The One Who Loves us and Sacrificed His Life,
so that we may live?

Share over post is good.(I don't come back here often anymore, but I do come back.)

I do know most of the ways to combat it. Spots in my house that haven't been clean for years got clean at one attempt. I literally cried to God that last time I tried. (Although, ya know. I don't cry. :p Does anyone at all buy that still?) And I did the dishes to hold out just that much longer, but the one thought swirled in a dust storm of oh-God-help-just-one-smell-of-ash-or-my-hand-after-a-smoke-oh-God-no-yes-yes-no-yes hit the entire time I was washing dishes.

He's given me the strength to get away from drugs. He's given me the strength to lose 50 pounds. He's given me the strength to go through the last 11 months. He's even helping me work towards not taking pain pills anymore for real pain. I know his strength. I still can't quit something as stupid as smoking. FRUSTRATING!!!

If it doesn't help me, it might help someone else.

My aunt smoked for 40 years she tried loads of times to give up.

Then when we moved house and got the new house all decorated, she was
determined that she wouldn't spoil the paint work by smoking, so she
just stopped cold turkey and never started.

I have never smoked so don't know what it's like to try stopping, but
habits generally can be hard to overcome. Sometimes I think it's about
finding the right motivation and the right time.

Lynn if you managed to stop for 6 days then you stopped! Congratulate
yourself for that, so you had a bad day, we all do.

How about setting targets, stop smoking for 5 days keep to it, then have a
smoking day, then try not smoking for 6 days, then have a smoking day,
then try seven days etc.

Dont worry about what others found worked for them, try what works for you.
Or maybe limit yourself to 5 cigs a day, then 4 then 3 etc.

If you have a bad day don't see it as a failure see it as running a
long race, sometimes a gate has to be jumped along the way, get over it and
continue running.

4 out of 5 is a pretty good record, I'd say :)

Well first off we have to identify the trigger (we know what the bullet is). Anxiety, boredom, craving. Or could it be the hand to mouth habit? Smell, flavor, all relevant. That chantix you talked about causes bad dreams and anxiety so watch out. I would recommend nicotrol. That's what I use. It's helpful as a pacifier, because basically that's what a cigarette is. Once we identified the trigger we can proceed to altering the trigger. Tricking the mind . One way of doing this is to grab something else other than a cigarette when the craving demands. Something odd that you probably never had.
Ever had frozen grapes? Yup frozen grapes keeps the mind occupied by saying "what the heck is this" . Let them melt in your mouth as your mind is trying to distinguish taste and texture.
7to 10 minutes are all you need to fight off craving. Try to occupy your mind with something else while doing this.

Change where you smoke. Pick a place less appealing, less comfortable, and leave your cigarettes there. Be surprised at the reasons you don't want to have a smoke in that place. To cold, smells, to far, it starts to get stupid.

Your body needs to adjust to the withdrawal of nicotine. By smoking the ingestion is immediate, direct to the lungs and off in the blood stream. Nicotrol is absorbed through the gums and then the blood stream. Slower but same results without the bad stuff that causes copd, cancer, etc. Less of a panic attack thing. Ya know.
Cold turkey is good for some but in most cases cause anxiety, super stress which may increase the habit.

Keep praying sis as will I . It took us years to develop this stupid habit and it won't go away over nite for some.
Remember 1 less cigarette is a start to your goal. Keep it up don't give up. We can do it.
By the way chocolate and Apple's also help with cravings.
