We have a few people who come into the Lounge and half of the chat is in spanish. And sometimes nearly all of it. Having a room for people who only speak english would come in handy. Or maybe a spanish speaking room so the Lounge doesn't continue getting taken over daily.
Isn't Lounge by definition already an 'English Room?' At least according to the rules it is.

All of CC, with the exception of Asia and India rooms, are technically English rooms. I think what Ugly, and other users at times, are complaining about is that at times the Lounge will become dominated by Spanish or some other language because of a couple of users. CC has never prohibited the use of other languages, just discourages primary rooms such as Lounge and Bible Study from being dominated by them.

4. English, please.
Please speak mostly English in the chat rooms so that others can understand you. At least please do not dominate the voice/video chat (or text chat) with conversation in another language.

Good manners and common courtesy would dictate that a couple of users wishing to converse at length in a language other than English would either do so in private chat or take their conversation to an unused room however all too often that doesn't happen. Even if CC were to dictate English only and outright prohibit the use of any other language the same thing would still happen because unless a Moderator were to be in every room at all times people would still fudge the rules.

So... are you under the impression that in these schools where Spanish is one of the subjects, English isn't another one?
Why not make sure someone can read and write English before you try to teach them to say hello is Spanish?

Why should Spanish be pushed on children that cannot read or write English?

So, the kids spend an hour learning Math, an hour learning Science, an hour learning English, an hour learning history, and then, instead of an hour learning a foreign language to be a more well rounded person English is the only subject we dedicate second hour to? Are you thinking the kids who can't read or write English would be better able to if they didn't have to take a foreign language class? Cause I'd suggest that if they're struggling in their English class it might reflect more on them as a student, or maybe their teacher, but probably has little to do with them learning Spanish or French any more than it has to do with them learning Algebra.

Frankly, most of the influence, good or bad, comes from the home. I learned to read and write properly, not because of my study habits, nor because of my teachers, but rather, because my parents considered those things important.

Do you really think these kids that cant read or write ..are getting anything out of any subject? Its insane to try to teach a kid in America that cant read or write English..to speak Spanish ... And its the education systems fault these kids are failing and this kind of nonsense with the Spanish is proof of the insanity the progressives have forced on all of us.

If a teacher cant teach ..they need to be fired. If a builders houses continually fell down..we would not blame the lumber company..

Mods are often in room when it happens. Or at least the same mod. It happens nightly. And i've seen it in the day as well. So may as well remove Rule #4 if mods are going to ignore it and let foreign language speakers dominate or take up half the room on a daily, or twice daily basis.

Molly, the most gentle person on CC, offers a warm, light-hearted joke and is scolded.

This place just about sucks anymore.
I know Molly. Yeah, she's nice. But nice people can be annoying too. What sucks is when someone has a problem with peoples behavior and others think it's 'funny' to push that persons buttons. And then the one trolling gets defended. Talk about things sucking here.

Well, you can always ask them nicely, to speak in English. Like I said earlier, I'm sure they won't mind. And that's an easier way in dealing with things, rather than remove a rule because it's not being followed (because, if that's the case, then, we can just remove all the rules in place, they're not always all followed anyways.)

No, but I think them having a French class has nothing more to do with them not speaking English than them having a history class or a science class. If kids apply themselves they can learn multiple subjects at once. If not, then it doesn't matter what the subjects are, they won't succeed. Now, you didn't answer my question. Do you really think they would be doing better in their English class if their 6th period was say... art class instead of German?

You can lead a horse to water... The most brilliant teacher in the world can only do so much if the kid has problems at home and misses at least 2 days a week cause he has to work to help support the family. How does a single teacher overcome gang problems? They can do their part, and more teachers need to. But without the help of parents, and a willing child, the battle will ALWAYS be uphill.

I did answer ...a student that cannot read or write English (as 30% of inner city kids)...need to learn to read and write English... Its insane to force these kids to take Spanish or any other language ..when they cant read or write.

What about real backwoods dialects? Would they be ok in an English (only) speaking lounge?

None of us teaches. That is a false notion. All you can do is present information and lead someone to the threshold of their own understanding. Professional "Teachers" have the knack of being able to incorporate a variety of ways to entice students to come to that point, but it is the people in their lives the other 97% of the week that they will most likely follow.
