We used to have a room like this.. It was called TextOnly... It was never, ever used, so we removed it. If we could get enough people interested in it, perhaps Robo would consider bringing it back, but right now it seems like all of our rooms are not used as it is.

Yeah, people list all kinds of ideas for new rooms, but most rooms aren't used, or not often, to begin with. We have yousing, youtube, sports, filipino, teens, singles and spanish. Yet in the Lounge people sing, play music, talk for long periods about sports, speak spanish and have teens. And it has the majority of the conversations and people, so no one leaves it much.
Far as the ignore feature... thats been brought up in other threads. Robo is working on updating the entire site and chats, from what i understand. And i believe an in chat ignore feature of some kind may be something hes working on adding to it.

The "texting only" feature seems more important than any specific topic rooms. In the lounge, those that have a mic and cam dominate the conversation. For those of us that do not have a mic or cam, or do not wish to use it, it would be nice to have a strictly texting room.

If you can learn to live with the video feed still, you can mute the sound in the chat with the volume slider in each room - just above the text field. Otherwise, you'll have to opt out of using a mic and hearing people each time before you open the chat applet.

You can still opt out of the video feed. Just select 'Low Speed (Dial up)'. It kills the video feed and doesn't have any adverse effects on the connection.
With all the problems people have getting in and getting disconnected, i have less problems than most because many of those problems revolve around the mic/video. Since i have all that turned off i don't get near the problems being connected. And i don't have to hear what people are saying, double bonus.

This does not eliminate the problem since those using the mic, and this can be for hours at a time, control
the topics. They show little or no respect for anyone else in the rooms, running a continous stream of
blab-blab-blab, perhaps just to hear their teeth rattle together.

do you have a sound symbol at the lower right of your screen? Try clicking it and select settings. I believe you should have the option of muting CC only.

Lol. You think doing away with mic access will rectify all the tirades, rants, and yakking?

The best the site can do for you at the moment is to offer the opting out of hearing people, and the low-speed connection setting to disable video streams from people, if that bothers you too. I wouldn't mind a purely text-based chat channel, either, but it seems unlikely.

What shes saying mostly is that having an option where there is a room without mics and video allows the room to be more cohesive and the flow of conversation will be based on a broader spectrum of people, other than the same group of mic chatting friends that dominate the room on mic each night and leave people without mics or speakers to miss out, or be left out.

And yes, it will help to reduce the tirades etc. I am usually muted in chats, and my friends know this, so if someone i don't know mic chats to me a friend will let them know i can't hear. I would say about 75% of the time or more, the person on mic won't take the time to type out the one line, or question, because they don't want to get off mic.
Because you can say so much more, and faster, on mic than typing, people are more likely to rant on mic than type. I have a mic, and speakers, but so little of interest or value is said on mic/cam i stay muted.

Hi Lindsay,

Most of the times i like it quiet too, so i just enter to the chat selecting "I won't use webcam" and "Mute all speaking" options and that's all :)

Have a good one, be blessed!!

Yep, I understood the principal behind it. My supplement there was pointing out that it won't "eliminate the problem". I don't disagree that it wouldn't aid in cutting back on ambient clamor. :)
