I got this message when making a post earlier tonight. I feel this is an unnecessary and - arguably - backwards logic feature. Limiting a post to a maximum amount of characters seems more practical to me. Demanding a minimum of 10 characters, when I didn't need that many to respond appropriately in a post, does not.

Never have I come been a part of a forum that set a minimum character limit for a post. It just seems arbitrary to me. So naturally, the suggestion here is to remove this feature altogether. As for a "max" character limit, well... I think certain people would not be content with that. :p

I agree very much :D

if the reason is to combat spamming, this is already taken care of by the "no posting same post within X minutes" thingy

well do you think the quality of text would go up or down?

imagine people jumping in threads, quickly skimming, and then writing i agree or thank you or thx or something like that.

with 10 characters minimum, at least people think a little which is vital to everyday life haha

I get it a lot when I quote somebody and do a line-by-line commentary, like this... because I don't have 10 characters outside the quote tags.

There is something to be said for "short and sweet", to be sure.

I love the word "arbitrary" :D

To be honest, it's never really bothered me; I'm content to "junk up" my posts with superfluous words, if I need to. Even if I would prefer a single word.
And here's where I always have to add a "closing statement" of at least 10 characters. But I can deal with it... although I would prefer to have the minimum lifted. But I bet having no minimum would invite a lot of responses that simply said "lol". How about 8 characters? That would let us say "Bazinga!", if we so desired. Hey, it may be crazy and illogical, but at least it's not arbitrary :D

Down. :)

Not a problem IMO. Some people do this already, but have to make the message convoluted to satisfy the minimum character requisite.

Awww, you're cute. Lol. As much as I appreciate that naivete, people are just as liable to post without investing much thought into doing so, regardless of the 10 character minimum inhibiting them.

You tried to steal and destroy my birthday! GET OUT!

Well, you must admit that realizing you had a birthday three days earlier put me in an awkward spot... "Happy Birthday" would do no good at that point (well, it never does any good, but you know what I mean) but since it was only 3 days ago, it was too close to ignore. I think you'll agree that the only thing I could do was express outrage that the birthday was allowed to happen in the first place. :p

:D Sarcasm is what I do best :D

But your post made me realize that, when I quote somebody and place my pink comments inside the quote tags like I did... I cannot be easily quoted if somebody wishes to respond. So, easier for me, perhaps, but harder for the next person. I shall abandon one of my favorite habits.

I'm going to finish crashing your thread here, and point out that the title is EXACTLY what Danny DeVito's grandparents said the first time they saw him.

I'm a member on 2 other forums, and they both have the 10 character minimum. It's probably a standard setting on vBulletin based sites.

The spaces only work if you have other characters in the message.
