I would like to share a testimony: Over ten years ago my eldest and her cousin were sitting for the student scholarship. Both were the same age, only a few months seperating them: 13yrs
From early childhood my daughter was an A grade student, Grace was a border line satisfactory
As they were the only children from both marriages, under one roof, they became sister and best friends.
There was a period of time (7-8yrs) Grace’s parents moved out to live in another resident but
Grace refused; she had preferred to stay.So my wife and I adopted her for one full year.
We bought up Grace as our own, treating her the same way as our child, following the family routine.
She attended the church service alternating with the grandmother and Sunday school
Excluding night services, we had family devotions every other night, reading, teaching and praying together
We taught the girls the value of reading & praying before they went to school and thanking the Lord for the day before they slept.
We notice both girls were unique in their own characters. My daughter could read but she struggled through her grammer.
Grace loved reading, she cuold read for hours, very fluent in her reading. The difference was,my daughter had a great understanding what she read but Grace’s understanding was shallow. This reflexed on thier grades,my daughter was an A grade student while Grace was a struggling to make C’s
Her teachers through the years knew Grace will one day exceed with such comments on her report cards as “Watch out for this one, she‘s a hard worker, she never gives up” even though her grades were low
The year before the scholarship’s the situation were same, my daughter was receiving Merit awards while Grace was was getting a few B’s and the odd ‘A’ a vast improvement
Prior to the scholarship my daughter won the Merit award for her grade everyone expected her to win a scholarship. There was no mention of Grace
After the awards were given you could see the fear creep into this young girl’s heart. She’ll ask her grandmother and her aunties in desperation what could she do.If you could only see her face and hear her cry, it bought tears to the heart. We could only tell her to trust in the Lord.cry out to Him and pray with her
She’ll be up early in the mornings, reading, praying, studying, she’ll iron her school uniform, washing them when they were dirty Endless nights I’ll pass her in the dining room as she’s burning the midnight oil studying.I can still hear the grandmother’s voice calling out two o’clock in the morning “Grace turn off the light,go to bed” then she’s up again at six.She even joined her grandmother attending the women service just to be in God’s presence, trusting Him and in her way asking for help
The year the scholarship were awarded their were ten position. My daughter was placed in the top five and Grace was number ten
Today my daughter has a degree in medical administration while Grace is in her second year, married with child, studying to be a doctor
My brother’s and sister’s in Christ the Word of God tells us: Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
It is never too late or too early. My youngest daughter (11yrs) read the Bible before she knew how to read.In our family devotion we’ll read the scriptures and she’ll repeat the words. Her three older sibilings are blessed with wisdom but she exceeds them all
Plant the seed whilst it’s early and one day with God’s Grace it will bloom as with Grace
