Music
(4:17) And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.*
(4:18) And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.*
(4:19) And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
(4:20) And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.*
(4:21) And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.*

As I continue my study on music I "stumble" onto this little fact. It shows here that Jubal was the father of musicians. At least those that played stringed instruments.*
The first thought I had when I saw this was, no wonder music has become an often troublesome thing in our lives. I mean look at this, the primary type of instruments used to make music. Even in today's society. Are some kind of derivative of these first instruments. String instruments. Technically guitars even fall under that category.*
Jubal was the great-great-great-grandson of Cain. Cain as we know was the first man to commit murder. As I see it this family line definitely had its problems. I see that Jubals' dad had the same history. *

(4:23) And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.*

I understand that a person can rise above their family's background. I also know that even so there is baggage that they will be "stuck" with. I am sure that Jubal had things in his life that caused him much anguish. In fact I would wager that the music he produced from these instruments was not all profoundly God honoring. Simply due to those things that would have caused him anguish would have also altered his creative outlet. And would have caused his compositions to spiral away from God honoring.*
I realize that that is primarily speculation. Yet there are facts that can take it from speculation and turn it circumstantial.*
Fact, in the thousands of years since then, human nature has not changed. It is just as sinful now as it was then. Fact, Looking at the same type of gifted people in our modern time. What do you see. Tremendously gifted Christian musicians that end up losing themselves to their notoriety and end up straying away from their first love. They end up following a worldly lifestyle that predominately leads to misfortune and misery.*
I cannot help but wonder if some of the reason behind the development of these musical instruments was really a form of therapy. A way of calming those psychological feelings he must have had to deal with. No different than what we do now. Finding music to help calm the the raging emotions within. Or in the case of a composer releasing that rage in the music they write. Guess that would explain some of that modern *music, though I know that some of it really can't be classified as music and is barely justified in being called noise!
As I continue this study my goal is not to convince myself that any music I listen to is good. My goal is to learn what is the best music for me to listen to. There are so many styles to chose from. Some of which I would not even deem worthy of consideration.*
I understand how influential music can be on the humans emotional capacity. Music can cause us to act and do things. It has a hypnotic effect that will cause us to do those things in a controlling way. We just can't help ourselves.*
For anyone that thinks that music cannot control actions. My wife and I experienced an instance of how tonal sound qualities can effect a living organism. It was really an eye opener. We were having an evening alone. So we decided to play a recording of "Natures Sounds". The predominate sounds were, water running through a rocky brook, there were occasional sounds of birds chirping and singing. A *slight breeze was rustling the leaves. Very lightly in the background was perhaps an organ type instrument holding a chord tone for from 5 to 10 seconds. No real distinguishable melody just apparently random chords. Honestly a very soothing mixture. We were really enjoying it until.... The Cricket! They did an excellent job right up until then! It was totally out of balance with the rest of the sounds. Our focus was immediately on the cricket. This was anything but relaxing much less romantic it was down right annoying! It wasn't too bad at first but it kept getting louder. We had to turn off the *stereo.*
After looking for something else for awhile and not finding what we thought we would like we decided to rewind the cassette and listen to the first part again. That didn't last long! Less than 30 seconds into the tape and hold it just a minute that cricket didn't start up that soon the first time! The cricket wasn't on the tape! That little bugger had found his way up the pipes from the crawl space under the bathroom. He was hanging out in the cabinet under the sink! He was just adding his approval to our choice in music that evening! *
So was it coincidence ? Don't think so! Here is why. We ended up using that music to track down his whereabouts. As we turned it on and off it was just like turning him on and off! It was actually an amazing experience. Though his capture was rather amusing * I know it was only a cricket but I liked his taste in music and didn't want to harm him. I just didn't want to listen to his rendition of our choice of music. Looking back I should have kept him it would have been a neat thing to show as a novelty to guests. I released him behind the woodshed. If he ever made it back to the house he never made his presence known.*
Point is, even a creature that has no real reasoning capabilities, I would venture that includes half the human population, can still be influenced by music in a way that is virtually uncontrollable with anything other than an on off switch. We really do need to examine the music we listen to. Not just the lyrics. It is entirely possible for just the arrangement of tones to effect us.*
Think you have enough grey matter to figure out how you can get away with out changing your music if you should. Think about this, if you do have more grey matter, you just have more matter to effect, or infect as the case may be! You just up your percentage of exposure.*

So true! I have a comment about nature sounds and in defense of crickets :) .

We live in the country and believe me it is not quiet in the summer with frogs, crickets, peepers, hoot owls, wild turkeys, coyotes, etc. being very vocal.

But I've noticed there's a tonal frequency that a cricket (or probably a frog of some kind), hits in the evening that's extremely pleasing to the ear.

It's interesting how sounds affect us!

(I wish this red-winged blackbird would move to another pond further away from our house...his screech is very unpleasant :) )
