I went on a trip to Papua New Guinea with Wycliffe Bible Translators and I wanna be a missionary, a translator at WBT.

Why We Exist
Connecting – We want people to meet God and to experience and practice restoration and compassion, building connections that create a network of visible hope.
Transformation – We long to see individuals, communities and nations transformed through God’s love and Word expressed and experienced in their languages and cultures.
For Real Life – When people meet God through the compassion of His followers and through hearing Scripture in words they can understand and relate to, lives can change. Families, communities and cultures can grow stronger. Hope and love can become realities, not just dreams. Justice and mercy can become tangible, not just words.
The Mission
The mission of reconciliation, of restoration, of justice, is God’s mission (thus it is sometimes called Missio Dei). Missio Dei does not belong to missions organizations or to churches. God’s mission belongs to God. Yet He allows all of us to participate. Wycliffe and those who serve with Wycliffe are just one part of this mission.
Missio Dei is about God, about the whole of creation and about whole people. It is about holistic transformation and integral mission that cares about the whole person. Integral mission involves both the proclamation and demonstration of the gospel. It’s not just telling, it’s showing.
God’s kingdom is past, present and future. God created unity in diversity and gave people many gifts in order to show the whole world the whole reality of His righteousness, love and purpose. These qualities and aspects of God are meant to be shared and demonstrated in the languages and cultures of all peoples.
Recognizing the need to reach all peoples, Wycliffe’s particular focus is participating in and encouraging the worldwide Church in ministry among minority language communities. Our desire is that every community have access to God’s Word in a language that speaks to them so that they can develop their own means of theological understanding and spiritual formation. Our desire is for all peoples to be able to lead fulfilling lives that reflect and glorify God.
There is a long history of God at work in our world. This is the mission we join, at His invitation, in partnership with others. It is our privilege to be involved in God’s mission at this particular point in history. It is possible that all remaining language communities can be reached by God’s message in their language in this generation. Wycliffe and many partner organizations have adopted Vision 2025, an expression of our desire to see a Bible translation program in progress by 2025 in every language still needing one. This is a huge challenge, but a real possibility through God’s enabling and the participation of His Church worldwide.
The Need
There are more than 6,900 living languages in the world today. It is estimated that nearly one billion people, representing more than 2,000 of those languages, do not have the New Testament or Old Testament in their language. As many as 200 million speak languages in which no Bible translation work has even begun. These people do not have even one verse of the Bible in their own language. Many of these language communities have oral cultures and many have no writing system for their language.
Approximately 80 percent of the remaining languages in need of Bible translation are in three major regions of the world:
Indonesia and the Pacific Islands: This region includes Papua New Guinea and the islands of Indonesia and Oceania. More than 700 languages may need translation projects. Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands have approximately 360 languages without Scripture. Indonesia has approximately 340 languages still needing Scripture.
Mainland Asia: This region stretches from Southeast Asia to Central Asia. Scripture translation may be needed in more than 500 languages. South and Central Asia, from Western China to India and Nepal have approximately 150 languages with translation needs. East and Southeast Asia, from Southwest China through Southeast Asia, have about 250 languages with translation needs.
Central Africa and Nigeria: More than 500 languages in this region have probable Scripture translation needs, including more than 250 languages in Nigeria and more than 200 in Central Francophone Africa.

The Calling
God’s mission involves the whole Church reaching the whole world. There is no separation of Church and “parachurch” in God’s mission. When Christ told His disciples to “go into all the world,” the meaning in the original Greek was actually “as you go into all the world.” Mission was to be the natural behavior of the Church. The Church was created by God, for mission—for the proclamation and demonstration of the God’s Good News. All followers of Christ are called to serve as they go … into their own communities and across continents. Our motivation is our love for and obedience to God.
The Context
The spreading of God’s Good News began in the region now often called the Middle East. It spread to Africa, Europe, Asia and beyond. In recent centuries, the missions movement spread “from the West to the rest.” In 1900, 85 percent of Christians were from the “West.” But today 65 percent are from the majority world—Africa, Asia, Central and South America. People from around the globe are coming together to reach all nations. Mission is the movement of God. It is God reaching out to redeem and restore humankind. God has entrusted mission, under His direction, to the multi-ethnic Body of Christ, His Church around the world. The unity of the Church is critical if the Church is to fully participate in God’s mission.
Holistic ministry is essential to mission. If we desire to see transformed lives, communities and nations we must focus on relationships and service that cares for the whole person. Integral mission calls for both proclamation and demonstration of the gospel. This includes caring for the poor, the abused and the neglected. It also requires awareness of and taking action on issues related to justice, health and education.
VISION 2025
Motivated by the pressing need for all peoples to have access to the Word of God in a language that speaks to their hearts, and reaffirming our historic values and our trust in God to accomplish the impossible,
We embrace the vision that by the year 2025 a Bible translation project will be in progress for every people group that needs it.
We acknowledge that this cannot be accomplished simply by our working harder or doing more of what we are now doing. It will require us to make significant changes in our attitudes and ways of working.
Our desire is to build capacity for sustainable Bible translation programs and Scripture-use activities. Therefore, we urge each entity within our family of organizations to give priority to strengthening present partnerships, forming additional strategic partnerships, and working together to develop creative approaches appropriate to each context.
To this end we commit ourselves to pray for the fulfillment of this vision, seeking God’s guidance and obeying Him in whatever new directions He may lead.
