Due to the nature of my job, I see a lot of horrible things on a regular basis. The ones that really get to me are those that target young people and kids.
Getting into trouble online can happen more quickly than you realize. Please be careful who you talk with. Please be careful what you say. Please be careful about how much personal information you give out.
Please ESPECIALLY be careful about being on cams with people, especially if you can't see THEM. And if they attempt to get you to do anything you wouldn't want your mom or pastor to see, RUN. They may tell you that it will be just between the two of you, and the next thing you know, they may be blackmailing you to do things that are far worse by threatening to expose you. Don't trust them. They are most likely selling photos/video of you to thousands of people all over the planet or using them to promote sleazy sites. It's happening more and more everyday.
I am the mother of a son who was stalked and threatened online in his early teens. I am an ex-cop who has worked a lot of cybercrime cases involving teens. I know these things destroy lives.
I have been praying about this all day due to another case I found out about today, and it was on my heart to post this here as a reminder to please, please be careful online. I don't normally post here. There must be someone who needs to read this, as I have truly felt the prompting of God to post this. I'm not going to duplicate this in the teen forum, as I know most of them post here too, but I really do hope they read this and that it gives them pause.
prayerfully...
P.S. - If anyone has ever had anything like this happen to them that they would like to share in order to help others be more careful online, I'm sure it would be appreciated. Thank you!
