So we DO still have to obey them? :) Cuz someone on here the other day, said they've been done away with.
If they are obsolete or have been abolished then there are no commandments to break. Wonder why God wrote them with His finger though only to have them done away with in a few years. Seems like a dramatic waste of time but then God is not bound by time. The thing is, without the law there would be no knowledge of sin. No, you can't obey what doesn't exist anymore. Regardless, I'm not advocating murder, but lying and stealing isn't so bad. Adultery is problematic though but there are divorce courts in such circumstances. Morality has been replaced with ethics. It has the appearance of godliness but without the hassle of worrying about sin and the reaping what you sow.

The ten commandments weren't abolished, they were condensed into one commandment - love thy neighbor!

If you do that one, by default you do all ten.
If you don't mind I would like to add.

Matthew 5:44-48
44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

So was Abraham given the 10 commandments?
Were Adam and Eve?
Genesis 26:5, “Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my (H8451) Laws.”

“Laws” is word #HH8451- תּרה תּורה, tôrâh tôrâh, to-raw', to-raw', From H3384; a precept or statute, especially the Decalogue or Pentateuch: - law.

The Law is not fully recorded in writing that we know of until Mosheh’s time, however, Scripture says Abraham and Noah had both obeyed His laws. The Commandments are found in the dbook of Job. Also, in Ezekiyl 28:13-19 it says unrighteousness/evil was found in satan, if there was ow Law there is no right or wrong. It is my belief that when the children of Israyl went into egyptian captivity they fogot all His ways, this is shown by the fact that Yah's name was know as far back as Genesis 4:26, and yet Moses did not know it until Yah told Him in Exodus 3.

Genesis 7:1-2, "Then YHWH said to Noah: Come into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen you righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take with you seven pairs of every clean animal, a male and his female; two of animals that are unclean, a male and his female;"

Leviticus 11:1-2, "And
YHWH spoke to Mosheh and Aaron, saying to them: Speak to the children of Israyl, saying; These are the animals you may eat among all the beasts upon the land" 43-44, "You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creature that moves about on the ground. Do not defile yourselves by means of them, nor be made unclean by them. I am YHWH your Heavenly Father. You shall therefore consecrate and sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any creature that moves about on the ground." 46-47, "This is the Law of the animals, and the birds, and every living thing that moves in the waters, and every creature that moves about on the ground. You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean--between the animal that may be eaten, and the animal that may not be eaten."

When Abel was killed the Name of YHWH was not spoken, but when Seth was born:

Genesis 4:26, "And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. It was then that the
Name of YHWH began to be invoked again."

Genesis 26:5, “Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my Laws.”

Genesis 12:7-8, "Then YHWH appeared to Abram, and said: To your descendants I will give this land. And he built an altar there to YHWH Who appeared to him.And he went from there to the hill east of Beth El, and he pitched his tent there; Beth El was to the west of him, and Ai was to the east. There he built an altar to YHWH, and there he prayed with the Name of YHWH."

So we see in Genesis 12:8 Abraham "prayed with the Name of YHWH" Why then do some translations say " by my name the "LORD" (YHWH - #H3068) I did not make myself known to them" Either there is a contradiction is Scripture or there is a translation error.

English Standard Version
Exodus 6:3, I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them."

English Revised Version
Exodus 6:3, and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH I was not known to them."

Restored Name King James Version
Exodus 6:3, "And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of El-Shaddai, but by my name יהוה was I not known to them?"

The Scriptures 2009
Exodus 6:3, “And I appeared to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Ya‛aqoḇ, as Ěl Shaddai. And by My Name, יהוה, was I not known to them?"

The children of Israel were in captivity and had forgotten all things of Yah through their generations, even His name…

Exodus 3:14-15, "And the Mighty One said to Mosheh, “I am that I am.” and He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ (
The Heḇrew text reads: ’eheyeh ’asher ’eheyeh, the word ’eheyeh, being derived from hayah, which means to be, to exist) And the Mighty One said further to Mosheh, “Thus you are to say to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘
יהוהStrength of your fathers, the Strength of Aḇraham, the Strength of Yitsḥaq, and the Strength of Ya‛aqoḇ, has sent me to you. This is My Name forever, and this is My remembrance to all generations."

Here we can see the Hebrews and the mixed multitude that left Egypt knew the Law before Exodus 20. We don’t know the specifics yet we can seed it is written they heard he Law before Exodus 20. Is this a contradiction to “the giving of the Law” in Exodus 20? No, it is not, because Exodus 20 was the agreement to enter into Covenant with YHWH. I personally find it makes sense that they were already told the Law beforehand, and retold directly from the mouth of YHWH in Exodus 20.

Exodus 16:4, "Then YHWH said to Mosheh: I will rain bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out and gather enough for each day, in order that I may test them, to see whether they will walk in My Law, or not."

Exodus 16:27-28, "Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the Seventh Day to gather it, but they found none. Then YHWH said to Mosheh: How long will you refuse to keep My commandments and My Laws?"

Exodus 18:19, "Listen now to me, and I will give you sound advice, and may YHWH be with you. You must be the people's representative before YHWH and bring their disputes to Him. And you shall teach them the ordinances and Laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do."

Exodus 20:18-21, "20:18, "And all the people saw the thunders, the lightning flashes, the voice of the shophar, and the mountain smoking. And the people saw it, and they trembled and stood at a distance,"20:19, "and said to Mosheh, “You speak with us and we hear, but let not Elohim speak with us, lest we die.”"20:20, "And Mosheh said to the people, “Do not fear, for Elohim has come to prove you, and in order that His fear be before you, so that you do not sin.”"20:21, "So the people stood at a distance, but Mosheh drew near the thick darkness where Elohim was."

Why did YHWH have Mosheh to teach them?

Because the Israylites were in captivity in Egypt and they forgot all the ways of YHWH.

1 John 5:17, "All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not unto death."

1 John 3:4, "Whoever commits sin, transgresses also the Law; for sin is the transgression of the Law."

Ezekiyl 28:13-19, “You were in Ĕḏen, the garden of the Most High. Every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, shoham, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald and gold. The workmanship of your settings and mountings was prepared for you on the day you were created. You were the anointed keruḇ that covered. And I placed you, you were on the set-apart mountain of Yah. You walked up and down in the midst of stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. By the greatness of your trade you became filled with violence within, and you sinned. So I thrust you from the mountain of Yah, and I destroyed you, O covering keruḇ, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your loveliness, you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour. I threw you to the earth, I laid you before sovereigns, to look at you. You profaned your set-apart places by your many crookednesses, by the unrighteousness of your trading. Therefore I brought forth fire from your midst. It has devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth before the eyes of all who see you. All who knew you among the peoples were astonished at you. Waste you shall be, and cease to be, forever.”

The book of Job is the oldest book in the world, and shows effects of YHWH’s Law in it;

1[SUP]st[/SUP] Commandment:

Exodus 20:2-3, “I am יהוה your Strength, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of slavery. You have no other mighty ones against My face."

Job 31:23-30, “For I am in dread of destruction from the Mighty One, and from His excellence I could not escape. If I have put my trust in gold, or called fine gold my refuge; if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much; if I have looked at the sun when it shines, or the moon moving in brightness, so that my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand that too is a punishable iniquity, for I would have denied the Strength above. If I have rejoiced when he who hated me was ruined, or lifted myself up when evil found him also I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for a curse on his life.”

Job 42:1-2, “And Iyoḇ answered יהוה and said, You know that You are able to do all, and that no purpose is withheld from You.”

Job 28:28, “And He said to man, ‘See, the fear of יהוה, that is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding.”

What is interesting about Job 28:28 is that Job said that this is what YHWH said to man and there is no record of this being said in Genesis (which is the primary biblical book
with information prior to the story of Job), thus this verse proves that YHWH spoke to
humans prior to Moses in at least one way that was not recorded in Genesis.

Thus this refutes the argument that none prior to Mount Sinai could have known what
the commandments were! If there were no commandments in effect, how could denying
YHWH be an iniquity deserving of judgment?

Job 31:28, "This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the Strength that is above."

2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Commandment:

Exodus 20:4-6, “You do not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of that which is in the heavens above, or which is in the earth beneath, or which is in the waters under the earth, you do not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, יהוה your Strength am a jealous Strength, visiting the crookedness of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing loving-commitment to thousands, to those who love Me and guard My commands.”

3[SUP]rd[/SUP] Commandment:

Exodus 20:7, “You do not bring the Name of יהוה your Strength to naught, for יהוה does not leave the one unpunished who brings His Name to naught.”

Job 1:21, "And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I return there. יהוה has given, and יהוה has taken away. Blessed be the Name of יהוה.”"

Job 1:5, “And it came to be, when the days of feasting had gone round, that Iyoḇ would send and set them apart, and he would rise early in the morning and offer ascending offerings – the number of them all – for Iyoḇ said, “It might be that my sons have sinned and cursed Elohim in their hearts.” This Iyoḇ always did."

Job 2:9-10, “And his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse Elohim and die! But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Indeed, should we accept only good from Elohim, and not accept evil?” In all this Iyoḇ did not sin with his lips.”

The third commandment is clearly shown in Job to have been understood.

It is clear that before Mount Sinai one could 'sin with his lips,' and that 'sin' was
known to exist then (after Mount Sinai, YHWH did tell the Israelites that the people
who used to live in the land sinned by violating this command, Leviticus 18:21,27).

4[SUP]th[/SUP] Commandment:

Exodus 20:8-11, "20:8, "“Remember the Sabbath day, to set it apart."20:9, "“Six days you labour, and shall do all your work,"20:10, "but the seventh day is a Sabbathb of יהוה your Elohim. You do not do any work – you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. Footnote: bThere are other Sabbaths, but this is the weekly Sabbath."20:11, "“For in six days יהוה made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore יהוה blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart."

The Book of Job states:

Job 2:13, “Then they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that the pain was very great.”

Job 2:13 supports the concept that the week was being observed prior to Mount Sinai.
It is consistent with the two accounts in Genesis that a week was used as a period of
rejoicing (Gen 29:22,27-28) and grieving (Genesis 50:10).

-

1 Is there not a time of hard service for man on the earth (Job 7:1).

Job 7:1 supports the concept of "six days shall you labor" (Exodus 20:8)
which is part of the fourth commandment.

-
5 That the triumping of the wicked is short...
20 Because he knows no quietness in his heart (Job 20:5,20).

Job 20:20 supports the concept found in Hebrews 4:3-6
that those do who disobey "shall not enter My rest."
-

21 Now aquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace (Job 22:21).
Where as Job 22:21 supports the related concept that "we who believed do enter
that rest...There remains therefore a rest (Greek sabbitismos, 'a sabbath observance')
for the people of God" (Hebrews 4:3,9).
-

4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? (Job 38:4).

In Job 38:4, God says He 'laid the foundations of the earth' which is similar to the
concept in Exodus 20:11 'For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth,
the sea, and all that is in them'. Thus in Job we see the nearly all the concepts of the
fourth commandment.

Genesis 26:5, “Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my (H8451) Laws.”

Laws” is word #HH8451- תּרה תּורה, tôrâh tôrâh, to-raw', to-raw', From H3384; a precept or statute, especially the Decalogue or Pentateuch: - law.

Waste you shall be, and cease to be, forever.”

unrighteousnessis word #H5766 עֶוֶל`evel (eh'-vel) n-e., עָוֶל `avel (aw'-vel), עַוְלָה, `avlah (av-law') [feminine], עוֹלָה `owlah (o-law') , עֹלָה `olah (o-law')
(moral) evil., [from H5765], KJV: iniquity, perverseness, unjust(-ly), unrighteousness(-ly); wicked(-ness). , Root(s): H5765

Romans 5:13, "For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law."

Romans 4:15, "Because the law works wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression."

1 Yahanan /John 2:3-7, “And
by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands. The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not guard His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of Yah has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked. Beloved, I write no fresh command to you, but an old command which you have had from the beginning. The old command is the Word which you heard from the beginning.”

Mat 22:37-40, "Yahshua said to him: You must love YHWH your Father with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. (Deut 6:5) This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Lev 19:18) On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth.”

1 John 2:24, "As for you, let that stay in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning stays in you, you also shall stay in the Son and in the Father."

Deuteronomy 6:5, “And you shall love יהוה your Strength with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your might.”

Leviticus 19:18, ‘Do not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am יהוה.”

1 John 3:3-11, "3:3, "And everyone having this expectation in Him cleanses himself, as He is clean."3:4, "Everyone doing sin also does lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness."3:5, "And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin."3:6, "Everyone staying in Him does not sin. Everyone sinning has neither seen Him nor known Him.a Footnote: aSee 1Jn 2:4 and 3Jn 1:11."3:7, "Little children, let no one lead you astray. The one doing righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.b Footnote: bSee 1Jn 2:29."3:8, "The one doing sin is of the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of Elohim was manifested: to destroy the works of the devil.c Footnote: cSee Tit 2:14."3:9, "Everyone having been born of Elohim does not sin, because His seed stays in him, and he is powerless to sin, because he has been born of Elohim."3:10, "In this the children of Elohim and the children of the devil are manifest: Everyone not doing righteousness is not of Elohim,d neither the one not loving his brother. Footnote: dSee 3Jn 1:11."3:11, "Because this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another (Lev 19:18).”

Isaiah 46:10, “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from of old that which has not yet been done, saying, ‘My counsel does stand, and all My delight I do.”
A yes or no would have sufficed.

Followed by a some Bible verses.

Just to clear up what Paul actually said in Romans 3:20. He did not say that the knowledge of sin is through THE law, meaning the law of Moses. There is no definite article (the) to specify what law. He said the knowledge of sin is through law, meaning every word of GOD. Countless people throughout history knew what sin was without, or before, knowing the 10 commandments because the things of GOD are known by his creation.

That's the question. :) Have the 10 commandments been done away with? Are we now free to lie, steal, kill, etc etc??? Bible verses would help greatly. :)
ALL the "Moral Commandments" are perpetually in force and will be eternally...
...The 10 Commandments are ONLY an "excerpt" of "THE LAW".
...The timing of the Sabbath being the only 1 of the 10 that's ceremonial.

Paul was often talking about the spirit of the word to people. Some were not yet ready to see it in any but a human way, but those who were ready could grasp some of the spirit of what he said.

For instance, he was always saying things like...you know murderers and liars and and adulterers, etc., will not enter, but you who condemn them, why do you do the same things?

He was not talking about this church he was speaking to doing these things outwardly! He was talking about the spirit of the word there.
Amen

I would offer its the revealing of the spiritual understanding hid in parables. The same that Blessed Peter as a hearing that does not come by flesh and blood.... the hearing of Godcalled it.

Without that kind of interpretation of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit of Christ spoke not. It also represents walking by a exclusive faith coming from a unseen source .Our living God.....and not that of our own selves. But as He gives us ears to hear what Him not seen is saying.

It would seem to represent the mutual new faith spoken of in 2 Corinthians that we all share as that which does work in us to both will and do as we work out the good pleasure of His will with Him.

2Corinthians 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

The little word it in the phrase as it is written reprsents the key that the gates of hell could never prevail against the power of God we have in us but not of us. It can be applied everytime we read as it is written. After three times with the temptation the father of lies. Christ spoke again and again as it is written, it made the devil flee. It is the gospel that we do have it in us.

It is the excellency spoken of below .

2Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the
excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us

A lawyer will never answer just yes or no, but rather they tap dance all around the subject without ever really answering....

I asked him if he has kept the law yesterday, last week his whole life and instead of answering yes or no gave this drawn out answer while never actually saying that he is a law breaker......

Well you opened the door, so don't complain.
I'm not complaining.

I asked a question.

Would you care to answer?

Were the 10 commandments given to Abraham and Adam & Eve?

Maybe then you can help me.
After all are we not here to help each other?

So would you mind posting some Bible verses that show that Adam & Eve were given the 10 commandments and Abraham.

How many commandments did God give to Noah?

I think his explanation is great. It proves he is looking to God for his answers and not his own opinion or religious tradition. He laid out sufficient evidence to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that according to the Word which became Flesh, Abraham and Abel, a righteous "prophet" of God, would have taught and believed the same instruction that God gave to Abraham's Children.

It's a good study in my opinion, thorough, and really lays out the case for those interested in the scriptures take. I copy and paste the post to Word and go through the scriptures to see the verses on each side of the ones posted.

But that's just me, I love to study His Word so the long posts give me homework :^)

Plus, I am still learning about the Word which became Flesh so these posts feed me sometimes, with Spiritual food I haven't eaten before.

They are a nice break from the one liners in my opinion.

but that is just me.

That does not answer my question.

I asked a question then I'm hit with a long line of Bible verses.

Believe it or not, but I know you don't believe it BUT I also look to God for answers.

I spend my free time searching God, asking questions, seeking the truth.
Just wanna be like Jesus.

But hey, what the heck.
To you I know nothing.
I'm just a believer in a poncy Jesus and going to hell anyway.

Don't know why you expend your breath and time engaging with me.

Boy I sure hope not. 4 of them are about our relationship with God. 6 of them about relationship with neighbor. Basic building blocks of a foundation.
As my purple friend megenta pointed out not one jot or tittle shall be removed according to Christ and the scriptures.
Is it really that hard to say that we are asked to comply in a manner discribed and prescribed by God?

Yes, as a legal document given to Israel.

Their meaning is eternal, so regardless that we are under the new covenant, these principles are still valid.

IMHO.

Rom. 7:12: "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good."

Jas. 4:17: "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."

I rest my case.
