Ok, here's an example of the change we've seen recently in that attitude:
All thru my career we blended insurance rates so that our retirees could afford health insurance at the same cost that we active employees paid. In other words, for 35 years I 'shared the responsibility' by subsidizing the insurance costs for our retirees. But this new generation? They took a bribe to throw us retirees under the bus by voting to end the blending of rates. Retiree insurance premiums doubled from $1400 a month to $2800 a month - forcing many retirees to now be uninsured. So, having paid my dues for 35 years to help others, I've now taken it in the shorts by those 'selfless rugged individuals' who now want to throw the whole of society under that same bus. So don't give me lip about sharing the responsibility for your new knee, because I spent 35 years doing just that only to be betrayed by today's 'rugged individuals'.
