We know David wrote the Book of Psalms, so that should portray his character quite well if we read the Psalms. We also know that even though David committed adultery and murder, God said David was a man after His own heart. Hard to believe, eh? So what does this tell us about both David and God? It tells us that God looks at the heart of man, the intent of the heart of man, and the hidden things that no man can see. It tells us that David must have had a good heart, with the same "characteristics" as God. God loved the characteristics of David, as He perhaps saw himself in David, in order to say David was a man after His own heart. There was something special in David's heart to find favour in God's eyes. I pray that I would have "something" special in my heat that God loves too.
