After reading several threads I felt like sharing this
In our body there are 2 types of emotions: the ones stated by nature and the ones invented by our mind.
Biological emotions(primary) arent learned, we are born with them, they accomplish an adaptation function for species and they wear out pretty fast. The most important ones are: pain, fear, rage, pleasure, happiness and sadness. Without these there wouldnt be life.
Mental emotions (secondary) are culturally learned and even though they can be useful if well administered, most of them are responsible for most psychological disorders. These are prolonged primary emotions ; fear becomes anxiety, pain becomes suffering, rage becomes grudge or agression, pleasure and joy becomes attachment and sadness becomes depression.
Sadness is a primary emotion that has the main task of unplugging us for a while so we rest or think. An obligatory STOP sign that makes us walk in slow motion for a few days or weeks, but THATS IT. Its a feeling that makes us feel hypersensitive and prone to crying, it languishes our physical and psychological functions, but it doesnt destroythem. According to experts, sadness is a way to keep energy, ask for help and solve problems. When it arrives, you just gotta welcome it and listen to the message: “YOU ARE TIRED”, “YOU NEED HELP”, “YOU NEED A SOLUTION”…
Depression is something else. It has no profit and it makes us learn nothing.
Differences between depression and healthy sadness
We gotta leave sadness alone so it does its job, but depression has to be kicked out! Depression is the soul’s mourning. Sadness is a pull by the ear so we can keep living, a moment, a refuge to find ourselves and recharge batteries.
So when you feel sad, dont worry too much about it. However, if you feel identified with or know someone with the symptoms mentioned before (on depression) it's important to look for professional help. Depression is a disorder. Its hard to ask for help sometimes. Lack of information makes some people make inappropriate comments without having any idea of what a depressed person is going through.
I hope this was useful God bless!

Differences between depression and healthy sadness
- In depression there is always low self esteem and lack of self love. When sad, the person still loves him/herself.
- In depression there is a clear desire of self destruction. When sad, this doesnt happen.
- A depressed person looks for isolation and affective solitude. A sad person remains effectively connected.
- In a depressed person, the mood affects all áreas (sexual, social, work, school, etc). When sad, even though the performance reduces a little, the person is capable to perform in a relatively acceptable way.
- Depression lasts months, sadness usually doesnt last longer than 2 weeks.
